Myron May killed after he opens fire in Florida State University library; 3 wounded

The shooter who opened fire early Thursday at Florida State University has been identified as Myron May, Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo told reporters. May graduated from FSU in 2005.

[Original story, posted at 11:53 a.m. ET]

Gunshots rattled a peaceful, packed Florida State University library early Thursday, with three students getting hurt as hundreds more huddled between bookshelves before police encountered and killed the gunman outside.

"There has been a shooting in the library, stay where you are," said a man speaking over the loudspeaker, as captured in a cell phone video posted online. "We will be coming to each floor and clearing it, and taking care of anybody."

One of the injured students is in critical condition and another is stable at Tallahassee Memorial hospital, the hospital said. The third victim, who was grazed by a bullet, was treated and released at the scene.

Officers from the Florida State and Tallahassee police departments responded within 3 to 5 minutes of the first reports of gunfire, according to Mayor-elect Andrew Gillum.

Once there, they found the shooter outside Strozier Library and asked him to drop his handgun.

"The suspect did not comply with the commands, and actually shot at one of the officers," Tallahassee police spokesman David Northway said. "They returned fire, and the subject was killed."

The school canceled all classes and exams Thursday in the wake of the shooting, offering counseling services to those directly and indirectly affected.

Meanwhile, investigators are surveying the scene and interviewing witnesses -- trying to determine exactly what happened and for what reason, something that Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo acknowledged they don't know yet.

"Obviously everyone wants to know why," DeLeo said. "That's the hard answer we're going to continue to investigate."

    Tables, book shelves become barricades

Final exams don't start until December but, still, 300 to 400 students filled Strozier Library around 12:30 a.m. Thursday -- cramming, reading and writing.

Then came the gunshots, following quickly by texts sent out to students warning them to take refuge and stay away from windows. There were warnings inside the library as well, where students huddled anxiously.

"If you know somebody who has a gun or you know somebody who has been shot, call 911," said the man over the library loudspeaker.

Kelly Kalich was on the library's third floor -- studying, coincidentally, why school shootings happen -- when someone ran up the stairs and yelled out, "There's a gunman, there's a gunman."

She didn't run automatically, but eventually grabbed her phone and did get out.

"Nothing goes through your head besides astonishment," Kalich said. "Your jaw drops because ... when you're in a large place like that, that's always your biggest fear."

Students took action by shoving tables and bookshelves against doors to barricade themselves. They also reached out to loved ones in tweets and texts, including Samantha Sillick, who messaged her father, "There's a man with a gun in the library. I love you."

Perry Kostidakis, a sports editor for the campus newspaper, told CNN the library was surrounded for a time.

"The entire campus is empty; I've seen one or two people come up and look at the scene. Everyone who is in a campus building is under lockdown right now. Policemen are still surrounding the library."

Graduate student Alex Lauren said students were escorted from the library to the first floor of a nearby building, where they continued hearing gunshots. They were told to wait for a bus to take them away from campus as armed police stood nearby.

"It was very scary ... I'm more heartbroken more than anything else," she said. "It's sad, my heart goes out to the people affected."

Police call shooting 'an isolated incident'

Afterward, DeLeo assured the public that the shooting "is an isolated incident and one person acting alone."

"There is no indication of any threats to the university, the students or our community at this time," the police chief said.

Homicide investigators, meanwhile, took over the scene around the library. Five officers from Florida State and Tallahassee police were placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

As bad as the shooting was, there was also some feeling that it could have been much worse -- especially if police didn't respond as quickly as they did.

"If there is any positive that we can take from this occurrence, it's that the victim count was not greater," Gillum said. "Today, we are all FSU."

Meanwhile, the ripple effect was felt all around Florida State, a research university with about 40,000 students spread out in various campuses in the Sunshine State's capital.

Mary Coburn, the university's vice president for student affairs, said the decision to cancel classes came after "we learned the scope of the situation."

"It became evident that there was a lot of impact on the students, and that seemed the wise thing to do," Coburn told reporters.

Campus buildings, including Strozier Library, should reopen by Friday, and all events scheduled through this weekend will proceed, according to FSU President John Thrasher.

There will be many, though, who will still be recovering physically and psychologically -- and not just the students who were wounded or in the library.

As Kalich said, "Yes, the students (who) were in the library were affected. But 40,000 students lost their sense of security."

Comment on one of his posts from a girl taking a selfie in a black minidress:

I know, right? There is shit like this all over his Facebook, but because most of it is "JESUS" related, everyone just shrugged it off as all good.

I rank this right up there with the crazy Jesus fellow who chopped his friends head off not too long ago.

Bleeding crazy outta the pores, but everyone blew it right off.

I side eye the fuck out of people who post blessings and religious shit every day. They're hiding something. Otherwise they'd be talking about their lives and not what their life should be, or some bullshit prophecy on how shit should be. It's fucking weird.

Yeah, I'm not religious and I'm not well-versed on the Bible, but the things he was posting were dark and disturbing.

And I totally agree with Shins...posting blessings every day is very odd behavior. Even my few religious friends only do that if something good happens or if it's a religious holiday, and it's mixed up with normal Facebook updates.

And yeah! I forgot about the Jesus freak who almost beheaded his friend because he talked about Wicca or something. That guy's Facebook was only a tiny bit weirder.

    TALLAHASSEE —

More details emerged Friday on Myron May’s mindset and state of paranoia in the days leading up to his attack at Florida State University’s library that left him dead and three others wounded.

NBC News reported that just hours before he opened fire at the FSU’s Strozier Library around midnight Thursday, May left a desperate voicemail for an acquaintance with this plea: “I do not want to die in vain.”

The message, NBC reported, was part of “a flurry of emails, texts and phone calls in which the former prosecutor laid bare his torment: He believed government ‘stalkers’ were harassing him and using a ‘direct energy weapon’ to hurt him. NBC also said he had sent packages to 10 people that would “expose” what he thought was happening to him.

One of those packages was sent to Houston and was secured by federal investigators Friday morning, said FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap.

Dunlap said Tallahassee police are still the lead agency in the investigation so she could not release many details, but the package did not contain a “hazardous threat to the public.” She declined to say if it was sent to a residential or business address.

Law enforcement officials told Abigail Taunton to be on the lookout for any packages arriving by mail in the next few days, her daughter, Diana Taunton, 34, told the Herald/Times.

“She was told that if we get any package, report it immediately to the authorities,” Taunton said at noon on Friday. “But so far, we haven’t received anything.”

Police obtained videos and journals Thursday that indicate May feared he was being watched and targeted by the government. Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo said May was trying to get that message out.

May sent friends messages before the shooting saying they could expect packages Friday. Authorities were trying to intercept them, but they weren’t sure where each of the packages was to be delivered. They believe they are being sent to several states.

“To date, letters identified do not appear to pose a threat or contain hazardous items,” The U.S. Postal Inspection Service said in an email to The Associated Press. The packages were in flat-rate, priority mail envelopes.

May graduated from Florida State in 2005 and earned a law degree at Texas Tech University. He worked as a lawyer in Texas and New Mexico before returning about three weeks ago to Florida. He has family in Ohio, where he was born.

May posted on his Facebook page links to information on alleged government mind-reading and he believed the government was spying on him. He made rambling statements to police and a former girlfriend. He abruptly quit his job and headed back to Florida, staying with friends and giving no hint about his violent plans until early Thursday when he headed to his alma mater.

Police said May, 31, an attorney and 2005 FSU graduate, was in a paranoia-fueled “state of crisis” when he showed up to the FSU library with a .380 semiautomic pistol, shot three people and was then killed by cops after refusing to surrender.

In its report, NBC said that Renee Pittman Mitchell, who called herself a “targeted individual” and has a blog devoted to government conspiracy claims, said May had reached out to her through Facebook about a week ago in a state of anguish.

“He told me he just didn’t want to go on living like this,” Mitchell told NBC.

“I am currently being cooked in my chair. I devised a scheme where I was going to expose this once and for all and I really need you,” May said in one of the messages, which was provided to NBC News and authenticated by a relative as May’s voice. “I do not want to die in vain.”

NBC also reported that May sent an email only about an hour before he opened fire at the FSU library, writing the following: “I’ve been getting hit with the direct energy weapon in my chest all evening. It hurts really bad right now.”

Herald/Times reporter Michael Van Sickler, Tampa Bay Times reporter Zachary T. Sampson and the Associated Press contributed to this report

Nah. Cause what are we going to do? We call the cops, and unless you are running around with a big ass knife, covered in blood, they're going to talk to you, ask you if you want to injure yourself or someone else. Then you're going to head to the nearest library or train station and take you paranoia out on the first person you see.

It's not like the old days, where, if you told people you saw a 6' tall white rabbit, they'd send you to Happy Dale.

The first of several packages mailed by a man who shot three people at a Florida State University library was delivered in Texas and is in the hands of the FBI, the agency said Friday.

Authorities thought the packages could contain videos and journals from Myron May, who was killed by police officers outside the library Thursday, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because that person wasn?t authorized to release information about the case.

Shauna Dunlap, FBI special agent in Houston, declined to provide details on the nature of the package or the recipient, referring questions to the Tallahassee Police Department.

?The package did not pose a hazardous threat to the public,? Dunlap said. ?However, it is going to be part of the ongoing investigation.?

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service also said the packages weren?t a threat and said they were flat-rate, priority mail envelopes.

Police obtained videos and journals Thursday that indicate May feared he was being watched and targeted by the government. Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo said May was trying to get that message out.

May sent friends messages before the shooting saying they could expect packages Friday. Authorities were trying to intercept them, but they weren?t sure where each of the packages was to be delivered. They believe they are being sent to several states.

?Mr. May?s sense of being and place in our community was not what most people would refer to as a normal,? DeLeo said Thursday. ?He had a sense of crisis and he was searching for something.?

At Strozier Library, about 450 students were studying when May showed up and opened fire. When police arrived, the 31-year-old alumnus had wounded two students and an employee and reloaded a .380 semi-automatic pistol. He refused to put down the weapon and a gun battle erupted. Between May and police, 30 rounds were fired.

May didn?t get past the lobby, but the sound of gunfire set off screams among students, who scrambled for cover among the bookshelves and barricaded themselves in rooms.

Vice President of Student Affairs Mary Coburn said Friday that a security system was put in place at the library after May graduated. It requires a student to swipe a student ID in order to get past a turnstile. May apparently was unable to move further into the library because of the obstacle.

Florida State President John Thrasher greeted students Friday as the library reopened with a heavy police presence.

Friends called May sweet, smart and understated. He returned to Florida to get a new start in life.

?His fraternity nickname was ?Sensitive Joe? and it was fitting,? said state Rep. Matt Gaetz, who belonged to the same Florida State political club as May. ?I was so surprised that someone with this docile nature would have something happen in their lives that would have this outcome.?

There were signs of his unraveling.

Police in Las Cruces, N. M., said a former girlfriend called to report he came to her home uninvited and claimed police were bugging his house and car. Danielle Nixon told police May recently developed ?a severe mental disorder.?

?Myron began to ramble and handed her a piece to a car and asked her to keep it because this was a camera that police had put in his vehicle,? a police report said.

Police were still going through May?s writings and social media posts, but it was clear something was wrong.

?Mr. May had a written journal and videos where he expressed fears of being targeted and that he wanted to bring attention to this issue of targeting,? DeLeo said. ?Mr. May was in a state of crisis.?

Abigail Taunton, who runs a foster home in the Florida Panhandle, let May stay in a guest house. She knew him as a teenager who moved to rural Wewahitchka in the Florida Panhandle to live with his grandmother after having problems with his parents in Ohio.

?We?re just all astounded,? Taunton said. ?Obviously, he was not in his right mind.?

May was licensed to practice law in Texas and New Mexico and Taunton said he was preparing to take the Florida bar exam in February.

?He was having some financial issues and moved back home and decided he?d come back to Florida to work,? she said. ?My heart?s broken.?

In New Mexico, Third Judicial District Attorney Mark D?Antonio said May worked for his office as a junior attorney from Jan. 18 until his unexpected resignation Oct. 6. He said he didn?t know why May stepped down, leaving a formal resignation letter on his desk.

?He performed his job with great distinction,? D?Antonio said at a news conference. ?He was friendly and kind. Everyone liked him.?

It's not like the old days, where, if you told people you saw a 6' tall white rabbit, they'd send you to Happy Dale.
You're right. It's sad, but you are.

I was just talking with Animosity in another thread about my daughter's stalking situation and how it took almost a year to prove our case and lock him up. You can be crazy as the day is long, but as long as you can carry on a respectful conversation and fake being contrite, you'll be free to roam the streets at will.
