Remains of Kayla Chadwick found in Morgan County
(July 5, 2013) The remains of missing teen Kayla Chadwick were found on June 27 in a rural area north of Fort Morgan.
They have been positively identified as being those of Chadwick, a Fort Morgan girl who was reported missing on March 28, 2012, at the age of 17.
The remains found in the 19500 block of Morgan County Road W were identified through DNA analysis on July 3 by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. They were found about a mile east of Highway 52 and the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.
The remains were discovered through information obtained in an ongoing investigation of the events on the night Chadwick was reported missing. Because the investigation is ongoing, the details of that information cannot be disclosed at this time, police said.
The cause of death remains unknown.
Fort Morgan Police Lt. Jared Crone said he wished that the search had had a better outcome but hoped the discovery would give the family some sense of closure.
The Fort Morgan Police Department continues its investigation with the assistance of the 13th Judicial District Attorney's Office, CBI and the Morgan County Coroner's Office. The Morgan County Sheriff's Department and Denver FBI have also been assisting with the investigation.
Chadwick's parents have been advised of the positive identification.
She vanished from the area of the Country Steak-Out in the 20000 block of E. Eighth Avenue in Fort Morgan the night of March 27, 2012.
Police learned of Chadwick's disappearance about nine hours after she was last seen on March 27, 2012, at approximately 11 p.m.
She had been at her boyfriend's, where some type of argument took place and a gun was allegedly brandished.
She reportedly left the house in an unknown direction.
Fort Morgan Police and Morgan County sheriff's deputies began canvassing the area where she was last spotted and her home at 1201 E. Eighth Ave.
In the days and weeks that followed, police, family, friends and hundreds of community volunteers searched an expanded area around Fort Morgan and Morgan County.
Officers talked to witnesses, checked area hospitals and viewed surveillance photos and video.
Many tips were received and followed up since Chadwick's disappearance, both locally and in other counties and states.
Fort Morgan Police have received help from the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, FBI, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Wyoming State Crime Lab and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The boyfriend, Ivan Torralba, 19, was indicted by a grand jury and arrested in November for allegedly hindering the investigation by moving or hiding the gun.
Last week Torralba's mother Luclia, 46, was in Logan County District Court after being arrested on charges of perjury and attempting to influence a public servant, charges also stemming from the grand jury investigation.
Her bond had been initially set at $200,000 but was lowered to $25,000.
She is scheduled to appear for a disposition hearing Aug. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
Ivan Torralba had been out on $75,000 bond but was arrested in June for alleged marijuana possession and violation of a restraining order.
He is to appear in court July 25 at 1:30 p.m.
