Brandajah Smith (5 y/o) Fatally Shoots Self, mother Laderika Smith charged

A mother is behind bars after her 5-year-old daughter was killed Sunday.

The child's mother, 28-year-old Laderika Smith, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder.

Smith told police she locked her daughter inside the home while she went to the store. When she returned a short time later, she said she found her daughter lying on the bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to the head.

Relatives are asking how the child was able to come in contact with the firearm.

"You got to think first. If you got kids in the house, anything could happen. Kids do climb and things happen," said Smith's cousin, Verlinda Williams.

Williams said she was at work when she received a call that her cousin's daughter had been shot.

"When they told me that, I was like, 'Shot? How (did) she get shot? Where (was) she? She's a young kid, where could (she) be at to be shot?'" said Williams.

Police said the child was home alone when she came in contact with a .38-caliber revolver.

"I'm very shocked, and it's just devastating to know that something like that could happen in my family," Williams said.

Why would anyone leave a 5 year old home alone, period? Not just the gun, how about knives, stairs, child abduction, wandering off.. fuck the list goes on.

This shit is ridiculous. Do kids think these things are asthma inhalers? Do they think they're waterguns and they want a refreshing mist? What the fuck!?!

I don't know. I think at 5 I knew what a gun was, would I have been smart enough to not pick it up? Maybe, but probably not. I would try and not pull the trigger, but what if I wanted to see what would happen? Maybe the thumbs were strong enough when the pointer finger couldn't do the job..

Her story is spotty = shenanigans

What do kids do when they find guns? Point them in their face and pull the trigger?

The story is sketchy when you know how crazy people can be. I feel you there. At the same time, I don't think 5 year olds have solid decision making skills.

Ron...we're talking about a FIVE YEAR OLD here. She thought it was a toy or was just curious, playing with it and trying to figure out how it worked. Really, you amaze me sometimes...

I was always under the impression that pulling the trigger was a bit difficult. I mean some kids can't work remotes.

Yea, I'm much more amazing than a child that is not only dumb enough to point a gun into their own face, but strong enough (with the manual dexterity) to pull the trigger.

I think you're missing the real show here, babe.

This is why I would think she used her thumbs, it was probably the only way to pull the trigger. Hence the head shot.

God damn. These kids are dumb.

"Notice how water guns work in a similar fashion, kids? What do you think comes out of this heavier gun? More water??"

I don't think at 5 you can put two and two together most times. I doubt she even realized that there would be something in the gun, definitely not enough to think to look beforehand. She is 5.. if we were talking about a 10 year old, you can wonder why they wouldn't have reasoning skills.

Either way it goes, what a bitch for leaving a 5 year old alone period.

    Well duhhhhh!

But seriously, five years old? What the fuck is wrong with people? At five years old, children comprehend a few things. They can't comprehend ideas or objects that they have had limited or no exposure to, like the dangers of a firearm. Unless of course, they're a Republican child and have slept with a loaded rifle since they were in utero. Kids don't understand guns or danger unless the information is repeatedly shown and reinforced. Just like disciplining children, it takes many, many times for them to "get it". And then, they still don't. Why? Because even when they've been given all the information and reinforcement, they lack the maturity to make the right decisions. Another reason why giving your hunting loving 7 year old a rifle is a stupid ass fucking moron idea.

But why lock your baby up in the house? It's called PARENTING, and it's best done in the presence of your children. Especially since the alternative is leaving them unattended in a home with an unsecured, loaded weapon. Now a little girl is dead and for what, some bread, milk and tampons?
Don't like what I have to say? I respect that. Go fuck yourself.

Okay, I guess "the real show" that I am missing is that a 5 year old was left home alone? I got that...I was asking you about the only thing you have talked about here which is the kid was stupid and should have known better. I call BS on that.

And do not call me 'babe' again, please.

    No problem, toots.

And the problem is that parents don't teach their fucking dumb kids anything. If a gun is gonna be laying around, tell the little dummy it's dangerous. I don't blame the dummies. They've only been on the planet a few years. Of course they don't know a lot of shit yet.

Glad this bitch is charged. What a neglectful pos. Leaving a 5 yo home alone is disgusting. To leave her with access to a gun, well yeah...this happens. I actually do believe her it happened like.this. Obviously dumb, and have better things to do than look.after her daughter.

Anyhow, I'm amazed that the 5 yo was able to pull the trigger-so maybe with thumbs. But I agree that you don't leave a 5 yo alone. I mean they get into things even when you are with them!

You also don't just leave guns lying around like they're throw pillows.

Good question. It's never happened here. I've considered running to the store a block away for smokes (when I was smoking) and my kiddo was sleeping, but common sense prevailed. If he'd woken up and done something in that 5 minutes, I'd not have lived with it. So different from 1970s parenting. My mother would go to parties when we fell asleep.
