ORIENT, Ohio - Ohio Rehabilitation and Correction officials said convicted kidnapper Ariel Castro was found hanging in his prison cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient.

Officials said he was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m.

Prison medical staff began performing lifesaving measures. Castro was transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m.
JoEllen Smith, spokesperson with the Ohio Rehabilitation and Correction, said Castro died from an apparent suicide.

Castro was sentenced to life in prison for holding three women captive in Cleveland for more than a decade and raping them repeatedly.

Castro was not a part of the general prison population and was isolated from other inmates for his own protection because of his high profile.

JoEllen Smith of the Ohio Department of Corrections released the following statement.

Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals. Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation.
Castro, 52, was sentenced last month to life in prison plus 1,000 years in the abductions of Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus

man - in a way, im like YAY, save that tax payer money,... but if police killed him, then thats not right because he locked up those chicks for TEN years! he should be locked up for at least 10 years like them. it takes seconds to hang yourself - you can string a few pilllow cases together to do it. I worked on a psych where a guy hung himself in a matter of minutes with the flat sheet off the bed.

i know you think i'm bloodthirsty, and all over the death penalty, but some (some) fuckers really need to pay for what they did, and death is too easy. besides, considering this man's crimes, a lifetime of being locked up was the only just punishment. he should have been forced to endure the same shit that he put those poor girls through.

Hard to believe it's only been 4 months since this whole thing was uncovered and now it's all over. It seems like it's been much longer but but the girls were just rescued in May, and now he's dead. He held them prisoner for 11 years but couldn't take being in prison himself. I wonder how the girls are feeling tonight.
