I'll never forget when I was in library school. One of the profs told the story of when he graduated from library school 30 years earlier. When he started applying for his first library job he was offered not one, not two but three directorships. The women he graduated with, even the ones who were clearly better qualified, academically, multilingual, with previous experience, etc... were offered entry level positions at which many of them were still stuck 5, 10 and 15 years later. All for the want of a Y. And it hasn't changed all that much.

I feel like "white male privilege" is less of a thing in Canada compared to other white majority countries. Justin's father Pierre Trudeau was an ardent promoter of multiculturalism and immigration. On one hand I can live with that because borders are imaginary lines drawn by the state, but on the other hand we've also imported a lot of barbaric practices, such as honour killings, from third world countries. I'm a 22-year-old Asian female and I ran as a candidate in this election for a small party that has never been elected. The 5 other people on the ballot were white and middle aged. As expected, I didn't win in my riding, but got more than double the votes of a white man in his 60s. It's a mostly Caucasian riding too, so my relative success can't be blamed on immigrants voting for their own race. We're not systematically voting in politicians simply based on whether they're white men, because voting is based on ideas, not demographics. In Canada I feel like minorities are not oppressed at all when it comes to equal opportunity in politics. Even if Parliament is not "diverse" enough, it's because immigrants (especially from countries that can't vote, such as China) haven't assimilated to our democratic culture, and that women tend to pursue other interests, like motherhood.

I wouldn't mind if the cabinet were completely female. All that matters is that they earned their positions fair and square.

'Mary Was a Teenager.' Alabama Republican Uses Jesus to Defend Roy Moore

While some Republicans at the national level spoke out against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore on Thursday in the wake of allegations that he initiated sexual contact with a 14-year-old when he was in his 30s, Republicans from his own state seemed to have a different view — with one citing Jesus’ parents to defend Moore’s alleged behavior.

“Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus,” Alabama state auditor Jim Ziegler told the Washington Examiner on Thursday.

Four women have told the Washington Post that Moore pursued relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was an adult. The women were between the ages of 14 and 18, while Moore was in his 30s at the time, according to the Post.

Leigh Corfman, the woman who was 14 when she says Moore approached her, told the Post that Moore touched her over her bra and underwear and guided her hand to his underwear. The other three women did not have sexual contact that went beyond kissing.

Moore denied the allegations on Thursday, saying they are “completely false” and a “desperate political attack.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Moore must step aside if the allegations are true, and Sen. John McCain went further, calling on Moore to “immediately step aside.”

Ziegler, on the other hand, said the allegations were “much ado about nothing.”

“There is nothing to see here,” the Alabama official told the Examiner. “The allegations are that a man in his early 30s dated teenage girls. Even the Washington Post report says that he never had sexual intercourse with any of the girls and never attempted sexual intercourse.”

In his comments on the incident, Ziegler focused on the fact that the report said Moore had not had sex with the girl and that the relationship happened decades ago. He also pointed to the fact that Moore’s wife is younger than him and the pair began dating shortly after the incidents detailed in the Post report.

“There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here,” Ziegler added, according to the Examiner. “Maybe just a little bit unusual.”

GOP State Legislator Quits After Having Sex With a Man

An Ohio Republican state legislator who consistently touts his faith and his anti-LGBT stances resigned this week after being caught having sex with a man in his office.

Representative Wes Goodman, who is married, was reportedly seen by someone who is not a staffer having sex with a man inside his Riffe Center office. The witness told Ohio House Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe of the situation early Tuesday afternoon, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Dittoe told House Speaker Republican Cliff Rosenberger, who met with Goodman. Shortly after the meeting, Goodman resigned due to “inappropriate conduct.”

This comes as a surprise to many constituents, because Goodman has consistently spoken about "natural marriage" being between a man and a woman. His campaign website, which is now offline, outlined his views on family: "Healthy, vibrant, thriving, values-driven families are the source of Ohio's proud history and the key to Ohio's future greatness. The ideals of a loving father and mother, a committed natural marriage, and a caring community are well worth pursuing and protecting."

Goodman’s twitter bio describes him as: “Christian. American. Conservative. Republican. Husband to @Beth1027.” His tweets are protected and his account is private. His Facebook page has been taken offline.

Rosenberger told cleveland.com that the interaction was between Goodman and a person not employed by the legislature, and that it happened several months ago but was brought to his attention only recently.

“I was alerted to details yesterday afternoon regarding his involvement in inappropriate behavior related to his state office,” Rosenberger said in a statement to the Columbus Dispatch. “I met with him later in the day where he acknowledged and confirmed the allegations. It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution.”

There have been no charges or complaints of sexual harassment filed.

Goodman said in a statement to the Columbus Dispatch: “We all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life. That has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service. For those whom I have let down, I’m sorry. As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I sincerely ask for privacy for myself, my family, and my friends.”

He is the second state lawmaker in Ohio to resign in the past month after inappropriate actions came to light. Former Republican state Senator Cliff Hite resigned last month after he allegedly made sexual propositions to a state employee multiple times.

Secret gay life of married 'family values' lawmaker was not so secret

As Wes Goodman built a political career around values including “committed natural marriage,” the 33-year-old Republican was secretly engaging in sexual encounters with men online, via cellphone and, on one significant occasion, in his state office.
This undated photo provided by the Ohio House of Representatives shows Wes Goodman, an ex-Republican Ohio lawmaker, who resigned last week after having a sexual encounter with a man in his state office.

The office encounter was the final straw that last week ended his political rise as a self-proclaimed Christian conservative, which had taken Goodman from congressional campaign worker to Capitol Hill aide to a seat in the Ohio House.

It also opened the floodgates on details of Goodman’s secret gay life, which turned out not to have been a secret to several conservative groups, House Republicans or their campaign operation.

The nation’s leading anti-gay marriage organization, Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values, was among the Christian conservative groups that knew of Goodman’s extramarital sexual contact with other men before his election last year, The Associated Press has learned.

Board member Seth Morgan said the group discovered — after it had endorsed him in last year’s legislative primary — that Goodman had engaged in consensual gay activity. Goodman faced no general election opposition and was said to be “dealing with it,” Morgan said, so the issue was set aside by CCV and another group that was briefed, Ohio’s Conservative Republican Leadership Committee.

Morgan said he sees no hypocrisy in the values movement’s support of Goodman, adding “we’re not perfect people.”

“From our perspective, we look at this and say, this hits close to home, but it’s another example of why we stand for the things we stand for,” Morgan said. “It’s not something that causes us to shrink back. It causes us to, sadly, move forward with a greater sense of determination.”

Johnny Hadlock, a former congressional staffer, told The AP he engaged in sexual banter by text and had phone sex with Goodman while the two worked in Washington in the early 2010s. He said he was furious when, years later, he saw Goodman campaigning on the issue of “natural marriage” between a man and a woman, “because I knew differently.”

Ex-Oklahoma lawmaker pleads guilty to child sex trafficking

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ex-okla...x-trafficking/

A former Oklahoma state senator accused of engaging in child prostitution and pornography pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal charge of child sex trafficking.

Former two-term Republican state Sen. Ralph Shortey entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Timothy DeGiusti in exchange for federal prosecutors dropping three child pornography charges against him.

Shortey, dressed in a blue suit and wearing a GPS tracking device on his left ankle, said nothing when DeGiusti ordered him back into federal custody pending sentencing. Shortey removed his jacket and tie, and federal marshals handcuffed him and led him away.

Shortey faces between 10 years and life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for child sex trafficking. The judge did not set a sentencing date.

Shortey's defense attorney, Ed Blau, released a statement after the hearing that said the former lawmaker changed his plea because he wanted "to take full responsibility for his actions and move past this embarrassing and difficult time." Shortey previously pleaded not guilty to the federal charges.

The 35-year-old Shortey resigned in March after he was arrested on state charges of engaging in child prostitution and transporting a minor for prostitution.

Police in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore arrested Shortey, a married father of four, in March after they found him with a 17-year-old boy in a motel room and accused him of hiring the boy for sex. Acting on a tip from the teenager's father, police went to the motel and smelled marijuana coming from a room where they found Shortey and the boy.

A police report indicated a search of the teen's tablet computer uncovered a series of sexually explicit exchanges in which Shortey referred to the teen as "baby boy" and offered him cash in exchange for "sexual stuff."

The Leader of #metoo Sacramento and #Metoo California is accused of grabbing a male staff member in the male parts

Note this allegation will not be seen outside the Sacramento area though.

SAN FRANCISCO — California Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia — whose high-profile advocacy of the #MeToo movement earned her national media notice — is herself the subject of a state legislative investigation in the wake of a report that she sexually harassed and groped a former legislative staffer.

In December, when Time magazine announced that “Silence Breakers” who spoke out against sexual harassment were its Persons of the Year, Garcia’s face was prominently included in the art accompanying the cover story.

But Daniel Fierro of Cerritos told POLITICO that in 2014, as a 25-year-old staffer to Assemblyman Ian Calderon, he was groped by Garcia, a powerful Democratic lawmaker who chairs the Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Natural Resources Committee.

He said she cornered him alone after the annual Assembly softball game in Sacramento as he attempted to clean up the dugout. Fierro, who said Garcia appeared inebriated, said she began stroking his back, then squeezed his buttocks and attempted to touch his crotch before he extricated himself and quickly left.

Fierro said he never reported the incident, which occurred years before the current #MeToo movement and new whistleblower legislation to protect legislative staffers. But after he mentioned the issue last January to Calderon, his former boss, the matter was then referred to the Assembly Rules Committee, which launched an investigation.

Fierro is not the only one claiming improper advances by Garcia. A prominent Sacramento lobbyist says she also accosted him in May 2017, when she cornered him, made a graphic sexual proposal, and tried to grab his crotch at a political fundraiser. He spoke to POLITICO on the condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...y-met-sex.html

Now a member of Utah State congress is hit with a scandal.

A married Republican lawmaker who voted for stricter laws against prostitution has abruptly resigned after an escort claims he met her twice for sex.

Call girl Brie Taylor claims Jon E. Stanard paid her for sex during two business trips to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2017.

The two exchanged text messages arranging to meet in Salt Lake City on at least two occasions last year.

In one particular exchange, Taylor asks Stanard if she should bring any 'accessories' or 'toys', perhaps a 'corset'.

The conservative politician was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 2012 and has three children with his wife LeeAnne.

Last year, 43-year-old Stanard, of St. George, Utah, voted in favor of stricter laws on prostitution, including increasing the penalty for soliciting sex to $2,500.

And on his website he states: 'I am a strong advocate for conservative family values. I am pro life, as well as for traditional marriage.'

    Here is an update

SALT LAKE CITY -- Taxpayer funds were used to pay for at least two hotel rooms that a Utah lawmaker who resigned this week is alleged to have used to meet up with a prostitute last year, according to records found by a state House of Representatives official. After the British newspaper the Daily Mail reported allegations Thursday that Republican Rep. Jon Stanard twice hired a prostitute in 2017, House and state elections officials said they were checking to see if taxpayer or campaign money was used for the hotel stays that the report alleges Stanard booked.

House Chief of Staff Greg Hartley told the Associated Press in a text message that Stanard, who resigned Tuesday night, was reimbursed for hotel stays in Salt Lake City in June and August 2017 when Stanard was attending legislative meetings at the state Capitol, four hours from his home in St. George.

The dates and hotel names correspond with text messages reported in the Daily Mail.

"It looks like they were legislative days," Republican House Speaker Greg Hughes told the Associated Press Thursday night.

Hughes said he didn't yet know if the House would ask Stanard to return the hotel reimbursements.

"If there has been an abuse of public funds or if public funds were used in a way that's inappropriate, we would," Hughes said. "I don't have solid answers for those things. I would need to have a way that I would know conclusively that that is the case."

Phone and text messages to Stanard's personal cellphone were not returned, but it indicated he read the texts seeking comment. His lawyer, Wally Bugden, declined to comment and did not respond to a follow-up email asking if he was denying the allegations.

Hughes said he did not yet know what the House would do next to try to determine if the Daily Mail report was correct, and said officials had not had any contact from Stanard Thursday.

It was unclear if the House would be able to check whether Stanard used a state-issued cellphone to text the prostitute and arrange encounters because someone electronically wiped the phone and it no longer contains his text messages.

The House Speaker said he assumed Stanard erased his phone, not House staff, and Hughes said he didn't know if there was a way to recover text messages from the phone.

House officials said they can't launch an ethics investigation because Stanard is no longer a lawmaker.

Stanard, a married Republican from the southern Utah resort community of St. George, resigned after serving five years in the House. He voted last year in favor of a law that made state prostitution laws stricter, including raising the penalty for people who are convicted twice of solicitation.

The House announced his resignation Wednesday for "personal and family concerns" but did not offer details. That day, Stanard the AP in a text message: "My father has terminal cancer and I am going to spend a few weeks with him out of state while I still can."

He did not offer additional information.

The Daily Mail reported that a prostitute, Brie Taylor, said Stanard twice paid her for sex last year during business trips to Salt Lake City and that he arranged the meetings with a number for a state-issued phone listed on his legislative profile.

"I already knew who he was because I screen all my clients using a phone number service and I Googled him," Taylor told the Daily Mail.

The newspaper posted screenshots of messages that Taylor said came from Stanard, but the phone number was blurred out. Taylor did not respond to a text message asking her to confirm the phone number and declined to speak with the AP.

The date and time of the messages indicate Stanard would have been texting her to arrange meetings on days the Legislature was in session in March and when lawmakers were in meetings at the Capitol in summer and fall.

Stanard's 2017 campaign finance report shows he submitted an expense on March 10 for $1,510 for "extra hotel expense session lodging" at the "Marriott Residence."

Text messages in the Daily Mail story indicate Stanard was arranging for a visit with Taylor at the Marriott Residence Inn on March 8.

Utah Director of Elections Justin Lee said state law bars any personal use of campaign funds and elections officials were looking over Stanard's reports.

Hughes said that when Stanard met with him Tuesday night to tell him he was resigning, "there were issues that were weighing on him. What exactly and to the nature, I wasn't aware. But it was clear that his priority was with his family and was not here."

He would not say if Stanard spoke about allegations he paid a prostitute for sex, saying it was a personal conversation between colleagues but "it ran the gamut of problems," and "I did not know there was a story coming, I'll just say that."

"I was absolutely shocked. I had never heard anything, there was nothing in my interaction — I sit next to him on the House floor — nothing in my interaction that's ever suggesting anything even remotely close to what we're seeing today," GOP Rep. Mike McKell said.

Salt Lake City police say they have no record related to solicitation allegations against Stanard. Unified Police Department of Salt Lake County said it had no record of contact with him.

Daniel Fierro understands he is not the familiar face of the #MeToo or #WeSaidEnough movements.

Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Bell Gardens, was.

Garcia, co-chair of the legislative women’s caucus, was on the cover of Time magazine a few months ago with other Silence Breakers, speaking truth about men who abused their power by harassing women.

Garcia was posing on the Assembly floor last month with other powerful women wearing black, showing her solidarity with sisters working in low-paying jobs, vulnerable to unwanted advances.

Garcia was speaking on the Assembly floor the other day in favor of the bill granting whistleblower protection for legislative staff members who had to endure lecherous legislators.

“You’re not standing alone,” she said.

Fierro was one of the people who did feel alone and unsure of the implications for his future. Fierro recalled being groped by Garcia in 2014 after the annual legislative softball game at Raley Field, as first reported by Carla Marinucci in Politico.

Politico anonymously quoted another man, a lobbyist, telling a similar story of being accosted by Garcia in 2017 and saying he smelled alcohol on her breath. Similarly, Fierro said Garcia seemed inebriated in 2014.

On Friday, Garcia announced she would take an unpaid leave pending an investigation by the Assembly Rules Committee. That was the only proper response, given her statements about men who had committed similar acts. But she also issued a statement saying she is “certain I did not engage in the behavior I am accused of.”

Fierro said he never felt physically threatened by Garcia or unable to escape. “I have female colleagues who have gone through much worse,” he said in an interview with a Sacramento Bee editorial board member.

And yet there is a familiar ring to what Fierro describes: a person with authority imposing on a subordinate. In 2014, Fierro was 25, a junior staffer working for Assemblyman Ian Calderon, definitely “not looking to cause trouble.”

He sees Garcia at political events, lives in Cerritos, which is part of her district, and worries his firm, Presidio Strategic Communications, could take a hit. That would affect employees who depend on him.

But he also became angry at what he saw as Garcia’s hypocrisy as she sought to become one of the most out-front leaders of a movement that is bringing about much needed change in the workplace.

In denouncing harassers, Garcia has insisted people believe accusers, and disclosed that a powerful male lobbyist groped her shortly after she took office in 2012, though she has not named him.

“It started two weeks after I was elected,” Garcia said, as reported by The Sacramento Bee’s Taryn Luna and Alexei Koseff when the #MeToo movement was gathering momentum. “I had a lobbyist grab my butt and I had a senator tell me not to do anything because this guy had power and it was bad for my career.”

After hearing such comments, Fierro last month told his old boss, Calderon, who properly informed the Assembly Rules Committee. Garcia said she hopes the committee quickly completes its investigation into Fierro’s allegation. We hope so, too.

For some people, this episode will raise credibility questions about the #MeToo claims. It shouldn’t. Whatever the investigation yields, it won’t hurt to remind that the impulse to abuse power is an equal opportunity character flaw.

Damn this harassment Scandal in Sacramento gets crazier.

A former employee of Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia filed a complaint with the state on Saturday, seeking to sue the Bell Gardens Democrat for allegedly firing him after he refused to play “spin the bottle” with her.

In the complaint to the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which was posted online Sunday by his lawyer, J. David Kernick of San Diego wrote that during his time as a field representative in 2014, Garcia was “very disparaging to the staff and others, used vulgar language, discussed topics inappropriate for the workplace and showed herself to be very vindictive in nature.”

It is the second accusation of sexual misconduct against Garcia, who is currently on a voluntary, unpaid leave of absence while the Assembly investigates claims that she drunkenly groped a former legislative staff member. In addition, a lawyer on Wednesday released a list of other allegations from four former employees in Garcia’s office who said they wished to remain anonymous.

Kernick could not immediately be reached Sunday for comment about his complaint. In his complaint, he wrote that Garcia was “seemingly not critical” of his work until “after he questioned the appropriateness of her suggestion that after a fundraiser at a whiskey bar” they “sit on the floor of her hotel room and play spin the bottle.”

He was disciplined with a “write up for insubordination,” Kernick wrote, and then fired two days later. Garcia used this write-up to prevent him from finding further work in politics, he added.

Tim Reardon, who served as Garcia’s chief of staff in 2014, called the complaint a “complete falsehood.” He said Kernick was warned for not doing his job, was encouraged to do better and was fired when his work did not improve.

“If Mr. Kernick wants to talk about his time working there, then he ought to open up his own personnel records and let people see what was written in there,” Reardon said.

He said he never received any formal or informal complaints about Garcia or the office environment during his time as chief of staff. He believes the allegations are part of a political attack against Garcia, though he does not know who is behind it.

“It’s like a malicious, really bizarre alternate universe built on a lot of innuendo and lies solely to destroy to character of Assemblywoman Garcia,” Reardon said. “That’s all that I can see.”

Another former staff member shared with The Bee a voicemail they received last week from a private investigator, asking to discuss their time working for Garcia. A message left for the investigator by The Bee on Sunday was not returned.

Earlier this week, four anonymous former Garcia staffers submitted a complaint to the Assembly through the same attorney as Kernick, describing a “toxic environment” of heavy drinking and graphic sexual discussions in her office. It also included at least one allegation of illegal activity: that Garcia sometimes directed her staff to perform campaign work, such as fundraising and donation request calls, on Assembly time.

During a press conference at the Capitol on Wednesday, San Diego attorney Dan Gilleon said his clients wanted to expose Garcia’s outspoken advocacy against sexual harassment at the Capitol as “phony.”

“She’s probably going to have to, at some point, acknowledge that she has some issues,” he said.

The anonymous letter describes Garcia pressuring staff to drink with her, frequently sharing details about her sex life, constantly reminding staff members that they were “replaceable,” asking them to run personal errands such as taking care of her dogs and pressuring them to assist with campaigns.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Garcia wrote that she would “address each of these issues individually after the investigations into these allegations are closed.”

“However, in response to (the) allegations I will add that in order for legislators to accomplish all we want for the people of our districts and the people of California, we need talented staff who feel empowered to do their work,” she wrote. “That is the environment I strive for in my office and I am confident I have consistently treated my staff fairly and respectfully. In a fast-paced legislative office, not everyone is the right fit for every position, and I do understand how a normal employment decision could be misinterpreted by the individual involved in that decision.”

Gilleon said his clients were hesitant to come forward for fear of reprisal. He said the former staff members had not brought their concerns about her behavior to Garcia or the Assembly before, but the groping allegations that surfaced last week gave them the chance they’ve been waiting for.

Daniel Fierro, who now operates a political communications firm in Cerritos, said Garcia cornered him at a legislative softball game in 2014, squeezed his butt and attempted to grab his crotch. He said it was hypocritical of Garcia to put herself at the forefront of the Capitol’s anti-sexual harassment movement, and he came forward because he heard that others may have had similar experiences with her.
