Babysitter Elzbieta Plackowska stabbed her 7 year old son and 5 year old Olivia Dworakowski

Two kids found stabbed to death in Naperville, babysitter charged

Marta Dworakowski couldn't get inside her locked Naperville townhouse when she returned from work, even though babysitter Elzbieta Plackowska was supposed to be there caring for her 5-year-old daughter.

Dworakowski drove to her sitter's home in another part of the western suburb but became alarmed and called police when she couldn't find her daughter, Olivia, or Plackowska, law enforcement sources said.

Naperville police made a horrifying discovery minutes later when they forced their way into Dworakowski's townhouse, finding the bodies of Olivia Dworakowski and Plackowska's 7-year-old son in a bedroom.

Both had been stabbed dozens of times as they slept, law enforcement sources said Wednesday as DuPage County authorities announced that the 40-year-old Plackowska had been charged with both murders.

She remains jailed awaiting a Thursday bond hearing, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said, declining to disclose other details.

Other sources, though, said Olivia's body was found on the floor, the boy's body was nearby on a bed. Two dogs also were discovered stabbed to death inside the house.

Plackowska had been behaving erratically following the death of her father just days earlier, sources said.

She had been arguing with her husband about wanting to return to her native Poland, sources said.

The woman also claimed she feared demons were threatening the two young children, sources said, adding she took both youngsters to a Naperville church shortly before the killings.

She also returned to the church later that night after the children had been slain, the sources said.

Plackowska still covered in blood was taken into custody at a Naperville home on Violet Circle early Wednesday after a relative there contacted police, the sources said. A resident, though, said she apparently was grabbed by police when she went to see a friend who lives on the street.

DuPage County and Naperville authorities earlier said in a statement, There is no reason to believe any additional suspects are at large.

Marta Dworakowski declined to comment when reached by phone Wednesday, but another relative said the family was devastated by the death of the little girl, who attended Brookdale Elementary School.

This is terrible, the relative said.

Residents in the Brookdale subdivision were staggered when they learned the two children had been brutally slain in their quiet, safe neighborhood.

It's just incredibly horrible, said neighbor Melinda Mattas, who recalls chatting with Marta Dworakowski while both walked their dogs in the wide yards between the rows of townhouses.

Everybody talks to everybody here, Mattas added. Everyone with a dog is always out.

Dworakowski, a nurse, and her daughter had moved into the neighborhood only a few months ago, just before school started, several neighbors said.

Mattas said the last time she saw Olivia, the little girl was excited because she was wearing a party outfit.

It is disturbing, neighbor Thomas Brinson said of the killings. This is a quiet community. It's crazy.

Administrators at the schools attended by the two victims communicated with students families Wednesday morning, notifying them of the incident and assuring the families that staff members were in place to help students process the tragedy.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, District 203 Supt. Dan Bridges said, The loss of a child at any time is a tragic, upsetting event not only for a school and the district, but for the entire community. Upon learning of the death of our student, a district crisis team was assembled and sent to Scott School to provide support for their staff, for their students, for their community.

Plackowska's 7-year-old son attended Scott School.

Counselors also were in place at Brookdale School, which Olivia attended.

Any time there's a loss of a student, it impacts everyone in a very deep and profound way, said district spokeswoman Susan Rice, adding that the traditional costumed Halloween parade through the halls at Scott, where the boy was a student, went on as usual. It's important that we remember that they're children.

This isn't the first time local school kids have found out a peer fell prey to violence. The community was left reeling in March 1999, after Marilyn Lemak drugged and suffocated her three children in their home on Loomis Street, in Naperville's east side historic district. Anybody that's familiar with Naperville understands that this community has been touched in this way before,Rice said.

Plackowska told investigators several stories, at first blaming the attack on a stalker who got into her home in Naperville, 25 miles west of Chicago. She later said the children had evil inside of them and she was fighting the devil in the house, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin
    said at a bond hearing.

Plackowska eventually admitted that she was angry with her husband, who works as a truck driver and is often gone, because he left her alone to care for her son, Justin, and work as a maid, which she felt was beneath her, Berlin said.

"She told the detectives that she thought by killing Justin she would make her husband hurt the way she hurt in their relationship," Berlin said.

Berlin said that Plackowska told investigators she found the children jumping on the bed and then attacked them, also slitting their throats.

"She had grabbed a knife and she made both victims kneel and begin praying. She began stabbing her son Justin and told him he was going to heaven tonight. He pleaded for his life and told her to stop. But she continued stabbing him until he was dead," he said.

"She then turned her attention to 5-year-old Olivia and began stabbing her with the knife multiple times."

Berlin said that Plackowska killed the girl, Olivia Dworakowski, because the child had witnessed the attack on her son.

Naperville slayings: Boy stabbed 100 times, girl 50 times

Before killing her 7-year-old son to get back at her husband, Elzbieta M. Plackowska told the boy he was going to heaven and ordered him to get on his knees and pray, prosecutors say.

Then she stabbed Justin about 100 times as he pleaded for his life and said he loved her, prosecutors said as Plackowska was denied bail this morning.

Next, she turned to 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski who she was babysitting at the Naperville townhome and who was now begging Plackowska not to hurt her. Plackowska stabbed her about 50 times because she was a witness, prosecutors said.

Both children's throats were also slashed, prosecutors said.

Justin and Olivia had been jumping on a bed when Plackowska entered and told them to kneel, prosecutors said. "She told Justin and Olivia to get on their knees and pray. She told Justin he was going to heaven tonight," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in court.

Plackowska fled to a church after the slayings, then to a relative who called police. She was covered with blood when officers took her into custody, officials said.

Plackowska first told police a stalker had broken into the townhouse and killed the children, but then said she had heard voices from the devil and killed the children to save their souls, prosecutors said.

"She stated the children had evil inside of them and she was trying to drive the devil out of them," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in court.

Later, Plackowska told police the children didn't mind her like they should. Finally, she told police she was angry with her husband and that she would kill Justin because "she would make him hurt the way she hurt in the relationship," Berlin said.

Plackowska, dressed in a yellow jail suit, spoke little during the hearing.

When Judge John Kinsella asked if Elzbieta Plackowska was her name, she answered, "Yes."

When he asked if she could afford an attorney, she said, "No." Kinsella appointed an assistant public defender to represent her.

After the hearing, Michael Mara, a senior assistant public defender for DuPage County, spoke briefly to her.

"She seemed upset but I don't know beyond that. She is on suicide watch at the jail," Mara said. "I briefly spoke to her. It's very early in the case. Obviously once I get the evidence, I will review it with her."

The children were discovered by police shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday after the girl's mother Marta Dworakowski, a nurse, couldn't get into the townhome after working the evening shift at a dialysis lab, according to neighbors and officials.

Police broke in and found the boy on a mattress and the girl on the floor, officials said.

Plackowska -- also identified in public records as Plackowski -- told police she had taken the children with her to a church in Naperville earlier Tuesday, then returned to the Dworakowski home in the 800 block of Quin Court, according to a law enforcement source.

At some point Tuesday night, Plackowska argued on the phone with her husband because she wanted to return to her native Poland while he wanted to remain here, the source said. Plackowska came to the United States 12 years ago on a vacation visa, officials said.

Prosecutors say her husband is a trucker who was gone from home much of the week. Plackowska told police she did not feel appreciated, and that she resented having to clean houses to pay the bills.

"She stated she was angry with her husband because he was gone most days as an over-the-road trucker," Berlin said.

But in a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press, Artur Plackowski said his wife had told him the day before the slayings that she loved him.

The husband told the AP he didn't want to talk further because he wanted to concentrate on giving his son a good funeral.

After the slayings, Plackowska drove back to the church but couldn't reach anyone, she allegedly told authorities. She also left several frantic voice messages on the church's answering machine before ultimately tossing her cellphone out the car window, officials said.

Plackowska, covered in blood, then drove to a home on Violet Circle in Naperville, where her adult son called 911, sources said. Police said they recovered two knives, one in the kitchen sink, the blade bent backward, and the other in her car.

"In all my years in law enforcement, this was the most horrific and gruesome crime scene I have seen," Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall said after the hearing today.

Berlin called it a scene of "unimaginable horror."

Some of the officers investigating the slayings had met Olivia on her day day at school this fall, Marshall said.

The kindergartner had gone into he wrong classroom at Brookdale Elementary School and officials, unable to find her, called police and 20 to 30 officers responded, Marshall said.

The officers found her in an adjacent classroom, and some of them had lunch with her, Marshall said.

"Our officers told us she was such a sweet and loving little girl," Marshall said.

Naperville Mom's Conversation with Priest Protected, Report

''The public may never know what Elzbieta Plackowska told a priest during an alleged confession before murdering her son and a girl she was babysitting in Naperville.

The Catholic rite of Confession falls under privileged conversation under the court of law, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report which looked at the alleged exchage from a legal perspective.

Sun-Times reported she talked with a priest in private during her earlier visit, but the context of the conversation could determine the degree of privilege the conversation fails under.

If Plackowska wanted her words to be made public, depending on the conversation, religious laws may protect the priest from sharing her confidential statements, the report stated. Unless she expressed an intent to cause sexual or physical harm to the children, then the priest would be obiligated to abide by state law.

Plackowska said she had visited the Violet Church in Naperville with the children on the same day she murdered them. The church was also the first place she fled to after stabbing the children to death.

On Friday, Plackowska took advantage of an opportunity to replace Judge George Bakalis, who presided over the Marilyn Lemak murder trial, a Naperville woman accused of drugging and smothering her three young children in 1999.

Police said Plackowska confessed to the crime, and admitted to stabbing her son to death in order to hurt her husband who didn't appreciate her.

Plackowski's son, Justin, was stabbed 100 times amid pleas to stop. The 5-year-old girl, Olivia Dworakowski, was stabbed 50 times. Both had their throats slashed.
Plackowski allegedly told police that the children had devils inside them, according to a police account from Plackowski's bond hearing.

Plackowski is being held with no bond on two counts of first degree murder. Her public defender told NBC 5 that his client is on suicide watch and very upset.''

School holds vigil for 2 slain children NA

''NAPERVILLE – More than 100 students and parents held a candlelight vigil for a 5-year-old girl who was found stabbed to death along with a 7-year-old boy in suburban Chicago.

The Friday night vigil was held at Brookdale Elementary School in Naperville, where Olivia Dworakowski was a student. The girl was found on a bed and 7-year-old Justin Plackowska on the floor nearby.

The boy’s mother, Elzbieta Plackowska, a 40-year-old Polish immigrant, is charged with first-degree murder. Authorities say she stabbed the children dozens of times as they begged for their lives.

“Sometimes it’s really hard, even if you don’t know the person,” a tearful 10-year-old Isha Bhamani told The Daily Herald. “I heard she’s a really nice girl. Terrible things happen for no reason. There’s a lot of people here, and it feels comforting. And it’s OK to be sad and let out your feelings.”

The gruesome deaths have shaken Naperville, a vibrant, populous suburb 25 miles west of Chicago. Naperville Mayor George Pradel said the tragedy is most difficult because it involves young children.

“We’ve had the title of the best place to raise children,” Pradel said. “To work with our children in our schools and get to know them and love them, and then a tragedy like this happens, and see other children saying why and trying to find out answers – I think that’s probably the toughest.

“We have to be leaders and try to understand that sometimes there isn’t an answer or understanding,” he said.

Those at the vigil lit candles in a meditation garden, listened to prayers and released white and purple balloons in memory of the slain children.

Plackowska is being held without bail in the DuPage County jail.''

Babysitter charged in 2 killings gave no warnings

''NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Prosecutors say the mother of a 5-year-old girl stabbed to death this week would have had no hint that something might be wrong when she left her daughter with the babysitter now accused of killing the girl and the woman's own 7-year-old son.

Elzbieta Plackowska had watched the suburban Chicago kindergartner fairly regularly since the beginning of the school year, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. As far as prosecutors know, Plackowska has no history of mental illness or hospitalizations. And the investigation has turned up nothing that might have given the girl's mother pause about letting her continue babysitting, he said.

"There was really no indication," Berlin said. "Nothing."

The kindergartner's mother, Marta Dworakowski, could not be reached for comment Friday. Reached by phone on Thursday, she told the Chicago Tribune, "I'm not ready to talk to anyone yet."

Investigators continued Friday to interview people close to Plackowska and to comb the car she was driving Tuesday night for evidence. Berlin has said that a bloody knife — one of two believed to have been used in the killings — was found inside the vehicle. On Friday, a judge signed an order giving prosecutors possession of the car once police are finished with it.

Plackowska, a 40-year-old Polish immigrant, came to the United States 12 years ago on a tourist visa, Berlin said. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Friday it had placed a hold on her because she could be eligible for deportation. ICE officials did not elaborate on the agency's statement, but one common reason ICE starts deportation proceedings is because someone's tourist visa has expired.

For now, Plackowska is being held without bail in the DuPage County jail. She has been charged with first-degree murder in the children's deaths. Authorities say she stabbed them dozens of times as they begged for their lives.

Berlin said previously that Plackowska told investigators she killed her son because she was upset with her husband and the girl because she was a witness. On Friday, he said Plackowska told authorities she had been upset about her own father's recent death, but he couldn't say what role, if any, her grief may have played in her actions Tuesday.

The children's gruesome deaths have shaken Naperville, a vibrant, populous suburb 25 miles west of Chicago. Officers discovered their bodies after Dworakowski reported her 5-year-old daughter, Olivia, missing. Dworakowski had arrived home to discover her door locked and the babysitter's car gone. Police found Olivia on a bed and 7-year-old Justin Plackowska on the floor beside it.

Plackowska told investigators that the children had been jumping on the bed. She ordered them to kneel on the floor and pray and then stabbed them both dozens of times as they begged for their lives, Berlin said.

Covered in blood, Plackowska drove to a Catholic church. Berlin said Friday that it was the same one where she went to confession before the slayings.

Finding the building closed, she called the church and left a message saying she had "done something bad" and needed help, Berlin said. She then went to a friend's home where her adult son was staying. Police arrested her there.

Berlin said Plackowska had been babysitting for Dworakowski since the beginning of the school year, although Justin and Olivia went to different schools and it wasn't clear how or when the two women met. Plackowska babysat Olivia numerous times as her mother works various shifts as a nurse, he said.''

Here's a more recent photo of her. Pretty sure DuPage county jail doesn't offer touch ups or dye jobs.
