my mom's side was reeeeeeeeeeeeeally poor in puerto rico and im pretty sure there isnt too much on that side. my own grandmother (mami's mom) wasnt sure when her birthday was, either jan 9 or the 11th. She went with the 11th.
My dad traced his side back to spain, to a knight in the 17th or 18th century - it would be cool to see pictures, are there pictures?

It would be awesome if there were pictures! If you have a name and some dates I could try and look it up.

aw i have to go tutor in a few minutes, but im going to be going to my dad's place today - so ill ask him. Maybe ill ask my mom too later, her side is really hard, because not only were they poor, but they mostly went by nicknames and its like no one is really sure what their real names were.

My uncle sent me some information about my family. It only led back to the late 18th century when my family was living in Virginia. They moved on to Kentucky decades later then to Missouri/Iowa. Then they lived on an island in the middle of the Missouri River for a while before moving over to Nebraska.

I just wish he was able to look back far enough to figure out when we immigrated to America and from where.

I've tracked my Mom's side to late 1500's Germany and my Dad's to late 1700's Ireland. It can be a real pain in the ass because when immigrating to the US, many people changed the spelling of their names for one reason or another.

My Mom helped out a lot by making a list of her relatives. My Dad's side, I had to find on my own. I just recently got a worldwide membership at Ancestry.com so I am supposed to have access to international records. Hopefully I can find more info about my Dad's side of the fam. I did find some pictures of his grandmother and great-grandparents.

The only branch of my family I can find info on is the PR side. This is my great grandmother, Juana Vasquez de Lopez, with some of her kids and nieces and nephews. The only one I recognize is the teenage-ish guy crouching on the far right. That's my Tio Willie, who died when I was 9.

I also found out one of my great great grandfather's was mentally ill, and died in a psychiatric hospital in the 1900s. I'm trying to find out whose parent he was.

I just got a message on ancestry.com from my father's first cousin. My grandfather was the baby, this is the daughter of his eldest brother. She's got the family traced back to the mid 1700s. Nuts.

Amazing, isn't it? You totally get hooked. I've made friends with a good handful of cousins on both my mum's and dad's side. I'm working so many angles my head sometimes just swims and I feel like I'm going to pass out. Finding living family on Ancestry really, really helps out. Not to mention it's just great to connect with family <3.

One paternal cousin had her brother's DNA tested and they were able to trace my father's paternal side (Grandfather) to the ship, the "Planter", which came to (I think) the NY/LI area sometime around the 1700's. The problem with DNA testing is it has to be on a male line. For instance, the line my cousin Shannon and I are working on is mostly female. My paternal grandfather's mother's father (my g. g. grandad). We've hit a serious roadblock and there really isn't anyone to be tested. Here, we would have had to test one of my great-great uncle's or their sons but one had no children and the other only had one daughter. So there's no one to test.

Another great resource, ESPECIALLY if they have archives online, are newspapers. I've found SO much stuff - like engagement notices, illness and death notices, even silly things like a guy stepped in front of my great grandfather's car so he drove him to the hospital or my aunt's birthday party and everyone who attended.

Angela - How long has your family been in the Brooklyn/Queens area? Because you can also get the Brooklyn Daily Eagle online: http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.o...AppName=2&GZ=T

You can also try searching the Suffolk County archives because if someone from the city visited family here on the Island (or vice versa), it would sometimes make it to our papers: http://digital.olivesoftware.com/Def...p?Skin=Suffolk

Finally, try cemeteries too. Our cemetery scanned all of their old entry books and put them on line and are searchable by name. That was especially cool because my Great Uncle Stan was the Sexton of our cemetery for many years and I would sometimes find his handwriting in the books.

I got the 14 day free trial too and I've traced my last name to many lords in England. So you know what that means? Probably a smudge of English royal incest in my family.

If you have a crooked eye, you can blame it on that.

I didn't know the DNA testing has to be done through males. There is only myself and my sister from my dad's side of the family

But! Does your dad have any male cousins?

Probably, but they would have different DNA than us.

If they all come from the same Great Grandfather, then they would still have matching DNA.

My cousin who was tested is related to me through his great grandfather who was MY great grandfather's brother.

I think most of his cousins are dead but I hope to find out through the research. What I mean is that they have different mothers or fathers not related to that line so there would be stuff in there that has nothing to do with me.

My family on my dad's side has only been here since the 50s, and my mom came here in 1969. The only thing I'm getting hits on is my Puerto Rican side. Nothing on the Costa Ricans or Italians. I have to sit down with my mom and her cousin to figure out names and dates because I KNOW that my maternal grandfather's mother was an American citizen who went back to Italy as a teenager. There's got to be a paper trail somewhere.

So the woman I found on there yesterday is my father's first cousin from my grandfather's oldest brother. SHe's got a few of the great great great great Lopez grandparents lines traced back to the middle ages. Her research seems solid but if it's true some of it is nuts haha:
on one line, we're traced back to a bastard son of Ferdinand II (the dude who sent Columbus out) on another, it's traced back to Charles II of Navarre (Charles the Bad) and Henry III Plantagenet.

    Things that are definitely true:
Around the mid 1600s, the two brothers the main branch of my family is from went to Puerto Rico from the Canary Islands (I've heard this story before, they came to mine silver). One went on to Monterrey Mexico, one stayed in PR. Before the Canary Islands, my family was from Seville, and before that they were Frenchman from Navarre. Crazy.

Wow they actually now have my info on my fathers side. I love how I can view all these people that are not related to me or are distant relatives, but have to plop that card number in for the free trial to see the right ones haha. But I will take it as a sign I am not supposed to snoop. lol

Just a heads up, if you do the free trial make sure you you end it well ahead of time. When I did the free one years back I ended with a charge, so did my sister and best friend.

You also have to be careful to not follow the wrong trees. My mom made that mistake a couple of times and had to back stuff out.

Yes! Ugh. And also, accidentally adding the same people more than once.

For sure! Part of the tree I got my Mom's side from was a huge mess. Whoever did it entered the same set of parents on both sides of a marriage. I really hope there wasn't inbreeding, but then I haven't been able to find anything on the wife's parents, so maybe there was. yikes

Marking. Me and my Mom are both really into genealogy and family history. Luckily for us, her father's side were Mormons (he wasn't - I think it ended with his father when they moved to CA), and those muhfuckas keep excellent records, including pictures, that are all available online.

One thing we found out years ago that was strange was this: When I was 5, we moved to a little town of like 400-500 people, about an hour south of Buffalo, NY. Lived there for 5 years. About 10-15 years later, my Mom's really on this ancestry kick, does some research, and finds out that the first Mormons in our line actually lived there back in the 1800's - some are buried there! Joseph Smith actually stayed in my ggg(?) grandfather's house in that town, and my ggg ad his wife were traveling westward with Smith when he was captured and killed. I'm not descended from the first wife, but if I was, I'd have probably been related to this girl I knew there, and I hated her so I'm glad I come from his polygamous second wife.

So ancestor lives there in this obscure town, travels west to Utah, the line continues on to Cali and then Seattle. Then Mom meets Dad, who is from Buffalo, and then after living near the city for 5 years, pick a random tiny country town an hour away to move to. The same tiny ass town my ancestors left over a hundred years before, and we didn't even know for years!

My Mom has for-sure traced her father's side back to 1500's England, when they came to New England. I didn't know until the day after I made my long-awaited pilgrimage to Salem, MA, but my ancestors were witnesses in the witch trials! (Samuel Abbe and his wife) I actually didn't know much about how much family history I have in New England until then. That side eventually made it all the way over to Cali, eventually to Seattle where my Mom grew up. Best part is that my Mom's Dad left the family when she was 3, yet his side is the side we know the most about.

Also, we are apparently Tudors, sorry Ang. :)

All I got in my search was that my 13th great grandfather Sir William Locke was knighted by Henry the VIII. Before Sir William Locke there were a bunch of Lords leading back to Lord Richardus Locke(1217-1299) and before him our family name was DeLoch and then Bourne.

My family heritage is English, Swiss, and French. Most of the bloodlines have been in the US for centuries.
