Family members of missing UCLA student David John Goeser announced Friday that they are redoubling their search efforts to the entire western coast.
Updates are being posted to the Facebook page "Find David Goeser."
Mark Goeser, David's father, said people are out covering a wide area of the Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California. The effort follows an extensive search by police Wednesday night and all day Thursday around the Los Liones Canyon and hiking trails of Los Liones Drive in Pacific Palisades where the student's car was found.
"He ditched his car in Pacific Palisades," Mark Goeser said. "That's 48 hours ago, so he could still be around. It's possible he went up to Washington."
Family members first received a report Friday that David was seen walking on Zuma Beach in Malibu Thursday night near lifeguard station #4.
However, Jessica Goeser, his sister, and their father found out that police interviewed the lifeguards and a homeless man who fit the student's description, but who was not David.
"There's a group of us trying to raise awareness and canvass along the PCH," Mark Goeser said. "We believe he's on foot and hope to have some sort of contact on foot."
'A very gentle person'
Originally from Camarillo, Mark Goeser said his son has been struggling under the care of a physician and is in need of his medication.
"He's a very gentle person," he said. "He's always been all the way growing up. He's been a great kid and he's very socially oriented."
The father said his son, who has been attending UCLA for two years, reached out to other students and was involved in community service projects here and in other countries.
"This is a very unpleasant and unfortunate turn of events," Mark Goeser said. "We want to get help to him as soon as possible."
The family also said it appreciates the public's help.
"We're grateful of the support of people rallying," added Jessica.
