Family members of missing UCLA student David John Goeser announced Friday that they are redoubling their search efforts to the entire western coast.

Updates are being posted to the Facebook page "Find David Goeser."

Mark Goeser, David's father, said people are out covering a wide area of the Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California. The effort follows an extensive search by police Wednesday night and all day Thursday around the Los Liones Canyon and hiking trails of Los Liones Drive in Pacific Palisades where the student's car was found.

"He ditched his car in Pacific Palisades," Mark Goeser said. "That's 48 hours ago, so he could still be around. It's possible he went up to Washington."

Family members first received a report Friday that David was seen walking on Zuma Beach in Malibu Thursday night near lifeguard station #4.

However, Jessica Goeser, his sister, and their father found out that police interviewed the lifeguards and a homeless man who fit the student's description, but who was not David.

"There's a group of us trying to raise awareness and canvass along the PCH," Mark Goeser said. "We believe he's on foot and hope to have some sort of contact on foot."

    'A very gentle person'

Originally from Camarillo, Mark Goeser said his son has been struggling under the care of a physician and is in need of his medication.

"He's a very gentle person," he said. "He's always been all the way growing up. He's been a great kid and he's very socially oriented."

The father said his son, who has been attending UCLA for two years, reached out to other students and was involved in community service projects here and in other countries.

"This is a very unpleasant and unfortunate turn of events," Mark Goeser said. "We want to get help to him as soon as possible."

The family also said it appreciates the public's help.

"We're grateful of the support of people rallying," added Jessica.

Remains found in Pacific Palisades those of missing UCLA student

Authorities confirmed Thursday that human remains found by hikers in Pacific Palisades last weekend are those of a 22-year-old UCLA honors student who went missing over the summer.

David John Goeser died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said.

The senior English major was last seen by his roommates the morning of July 22 in the 1000 block of Roebling Avenue in Westwood, authorities said. His family went to his house to check on him after not hearing from him in over week, but found only his identification, cellphone and credit cards, officials said.

His car was found three days later near Los Liones Drive and Sunset Boulevard, not far from the entrance to the Los Liones Canyon Trail, where authorities said the hikers found a skull, torso and bones about 11 a.m. Saturday.

A flier distributed by family members on Facebook said Goeser was under a doctor's care and taking medication at the time of his disappearance.

A posting on the "Find David Goeser" Facebook page early Thursday confirmed the news.

"While we grieve this tremendous loss, we are immensely grateful for the love and support of all who helped us in our search," his parents wrote. "We would ask that you continue to respect the family's privacy at this time, and we thank you for your ongoing prayers and support. You have been a true gift."

A memorial service has been scheduled for Oct. 6 at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village. Goeser's family said more information would be available on Facebook later.
