A 4-month-old girl died and a 16-month-old girl was hospitalized Saturday in separate incidents in suburban Indianapolis when both were found trapped in cars during near-record 105-degree heat.
The 4-month-old was found by police about 3:35 p.m. Saturday in Greenfield, about 25 miles east of Indianapolis.
Greenfield Police Chief John Jester says the baby's death is still under investigation, but says it appears she had been left in the car for "an extended period of time." The baby was pronounced dead at Hancock Regional Hospital, he said.
Jester said Saturday night that the father faces a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. The names of the father and the child weren't immediately released.
In Fishers, 15 miles northwest of Indianapolis, police broke a side window of a Ford Explorer SUV to rescue a 16-month-old girl locked inside.
Police were called to a store parking lot shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday and found the child, police spokesman Tom Weger said. Officers said the temperature inside the vehicle was 124 degrees. The girl began having seizures shortly after being taken inside an air-conditioned building, he said.
The girl, whose name was not released, was taken to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. Weger said he does not know her condition. A hospital spokeswoman said she could not provide information without the child's name.
Weger said the girl's mother, 30-year-old Meg Trueblood, of Fishers, has been charged with neglect.
Saturday's 105-degree temperature was 1 degree shy of Indianapolis' all-time high, set on July 14, 1936.
