I think it's cause he went through this whole thing only because he couldn't live with a little bit less money.

If someone does shit like this to protect their home, people can be more sympathetic. When they start a fire to protect their mansion, no one gives a fuck.

Hatred is a strong word, disgust is more like it. He was so consumed by losing a mansion that he decided to not only put himself at risk but the people around him by setting fire to his home so that he can illegally collect money for his inability to pay a mortgage. Then, to top it all off, gets caught and decided to off himself sitting directly next to the person fighting for him because he was going to have to go to prison for what he did.

I mean, yeah, 16 years is harsh. But instead of living life and starting anew he choose to burn it all down in hopes that he could get away with being schiesty. Like he should be rewarded for some shit? Sorry, I don't think so.

?? I just don't get where this is coming from or what it even means. Guy was desperate, lost everything, thought he'd collect insurance. It was stupid but not like, something I'm totally shocked and outraged and disgusted by. I am pretty sure he lived in a big ass house not near other people.

Right. Obviously the act of an incredibly desperate person.

Yea, but it's easy to feel bad for someone who can't feed their kids; not so much when they're struggling to continue feeding their kids caviar and foie gras.

That's why fuck him. Boo hoo, can't keep the mansion.

I'm guessing it was a little more extreme than no longer being able to afford caviar. Dude was ridiculously more in debt, at least, than someone who can't feed his kids. I got five on it.

It was stupid, and his answer to getting caught trying to pull one over was to publicly suicide in front of everyone. All stemming from not having the social status that he desired or was used to.

Here is what we know about his financial situation:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crim...icle-1.1104528

He had been described as someone with a taste for the finer things, collecting original Picasso sketches to put in his tony $3.5 million Biltmore Estates mansion. He was also an adventurer, who scaled Mount Everest in May 2009 and once bragged to a local Phoenix station about his $800 climbing shoes.

Marin’s home caught fire two months later.

Prosecutors alleged it was no accident: He had fallen into serious debt and could no longer afford the $17,250 monthly mortgage payments. In addition, he stood to gain a $650,000 insurance claim, according to reports.

Maybe scaling it down a bit would have saved him, poor soul.

And according to this fellow hater:

    http://www.wcvarones.com/2012/06/gre...ael-marin.html

Marin added that "feeding the kitty month after month" — staggering $17,000-plus interest-only payments on the Biltmore home to private moneylenders, plus a mortgage at the Gilbert residence — was eating him alive financially.

And looming over Marin like an ugly storm cloud was a $2.3 million balloon mortgage payment on the Biltmore home, due in the coming month.

The Phoenix New Times story says the real sales price was $2.55 million, but it was inflated with some sketchy fake loan deal from a friend in order to inflate the appraisal price so he could get away with flipping it in a charity auction scam.

Takes one to know one: Marin self-published The Illustrated Field Guide to Morons.

Marin's primary residence, a more modest house at 438 E Vaughn Ave in Gilbert, was foreclosed in July 2010 and sold for $190,000 in December 2010.

I don't understand your point. He couldn't afford any of those things. Like Nancy Drew, I bet his financial situation was a little worse than just needing to downsize his yacht.

My point is this, I don't think it really had to do with depression as much as refusing to live a less extravagant lifestyle and refusing to accept responsibility for his actions. His actions were pussified and if it were my father pulling that stunt I would be furious at him for taking his life when he could have at the least been there for his family at some point.

It's not like he was given 16 years, that was the max he would have received if it ever got to that point of the trial. He heard guilty period and just offed himself.

I mean people can be seriously ill and depressed even if they have money. The guy decided to burn down his own house and came out in scuba gear. He chose painful cyanide poisoning to end his life. I mean isn't it obvious this guy wasn't all there?

Really? This sounds like desperation, not mental illness.

Some people will do anything to "stay on top."

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. Not to mention it can be kind of devastating to lose everything. The higher you are, the further you have to fall.

Just look at the suicide rates during the stock market crashes.

You really think he was like, " Hey i am millions in debt and want to cash out 650k because after that i now will be able to stay on top"

Your theory leads even to a more severe case of mental illness than mine.

Yeah, when you lose your home,it's not just because you can't afford the mortgage. You're in way deeper shit than just downsizing.

From the looks of it all of his problems stemmed from bad decision making and greed. I am having a hard time seeing where he is 'depressed' or mentally ill. There hasn't been one person to come forward and say on his behalf that he had mental or emotional issues. Seems to me he was being calculated and got caught and didn't want to take punishment for his downward spiral.

All of his actions were based off of choice, the choice to only live one way.

??? He committed suicide and also have you ever experienced like, losing everything you have in life? It's kind of a downer.

No offense but everything you're asserting is in direct opposition to psychology.

Shit, I hardly have crap and lost everything, It isn't a good feeling, but never was my thought process trying to schiest my way out of my hole and decide to kill myself because being schiesty didn't work out for me.

Maybe he was severely depressed, mentally unstable and completely lost his marbles. It's unfortunate he was also so calculated that it doesn't look like he is that crazy.. just really really selfishly stupid.

Yeah seriously. Also as Dylan said, "When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose." Also when you know what it's like to go from being a multi-millionaire to destitute maybe you'll understand the emotional response/mental damage it inflicts. Also everyone handles situations differently and some people are more susceptible to depression. Also as far as I know he wasn't making his money off serving kitten stew to starving babies and switching medicines and selling thme black market or whatever. He just fell really hard, that tends to get one down.
