Mystery surrounds the death of a North Texas woman who was discovered in Haltom City's Fossil Creek Park.
Birdie Lunsford was found lying on a concrete slab in the middle of a creek in the park near the Diamond Oaks Country Club, according to police.
The 34-year-old woman had spoken to her father that night, telling him she was at the park looking for unique rocks and fossils for her collection. Shortly afterward a 911 call lasting 6 minutes was placed from her phone.
"She had made a 911 call at 7:20 and I talked to her at 7, so a 20 minute span there ? something happened. I don't know what happened," William Lunsford said. "When I talked to her, she was fine."
Police have listened to the call and said the woman did not indicate that she was in any trouble.
"911, what is the nature of your emergency," the operator said.
"Ah well, I'm not exactly in an emergency but um is there a call from Haltom City? Um, gonna sound kind of strange because people aren't always watching me," Lunsford said.
She explained to the operator that she thought someone must have called 911 after hearing her scream and jump on a log when she saw a snake. She said she saw a man hiding behind a tree and thought he might be with the neighborhood watch.
"Do you want me to have officers come speak to you?" the operator asked.
"Well yea, I was kind of waiting on them. Um, I saw a water moccasin. I jumped up on a log and stayed there for about 20 minutes," Lunsford said.
But in the end she tells the operator not to send an officer.
"So you don't need to speak to an officer?" the operator asked again.
"No, no not if ah, you know, if they didn't call saying there was a crazy woman," she said.
"No they didn't," the operator said.
"Thank you so much. You just relieved me," Lunsford said.
"No problem. You have a good evening," the operator said.
Police said there were no signs of foul play at the scene and Lunsford's cause of death is still unknown.
The Tarrant County medical examiner will determine how she died.
"We're just at a loss and I'm going to miss her, miss her a lot," William Lunsford said.
