I used to work at a Fedex ship place and these guys used to ship their boxes through us: http://www.rawvolutionnyc.com/. One day he had some surplus so he gave it to me to check out (he wasn't pushy about it so I was like, ok cool). Some of the stuff was really good, the salads and gazpacho type soups especially, but do not tell me something made of cashew is cheese. Because it isn't, ever. Just call it cashew loaf or something and stop lying.

They do exist, it's just the meat industry is geared in such a way that to live in what is a more "natural" way (hormone free, free range, grass fed animals) costs about 4x as much, if my past experiences are any indication. It may be because I live in New York City, which isn't exactly known for it's lush green animal pastures lol, but supermarket ground beef is about 2 dollars a pound, while ground beef that meets the criteria up there is about 8.99 a pound. It's ridiculous and not doable for the vast majority of the population. Hell, it only started being doable for me. Don't even get me started on the cost of environmentally friendly fished seafood

This also ties into the whole idea of urban food deserts. I believe Dana mentioned that one pound of beef needs 12? 16? pounds of grain. You can't give a mother in Harlem a 12 pound sack of grain and expect her to know what to do with it. But the education and socioeconomic aspects of this are more Peavey's area of expertise. so I'll leave it alone.

One thing I was thinking about, and vehemently disagree with, is people who put their cats on vegetarian diets. You can make the argument that humans are geared towards being vegetarians (I don't agree, but you can say it), but a cat is built to be a carnivore, through and through. It goes against the nature of your animal to impose your beliefs on it. IMO of course.
Agree! (I know, you didn't expect that ) I'm realistic and understand that people aren't all going to go vegetarian. I would LOVE to see change in the way livestock are treated. The only reason meat/dairy is as cheap as it is is because of government subsidization. Fast Food Nation, Food Inc, and Forks Over Knives are great. I haven't finished FI yet, but I remember watching the preview and a farmer saying something along the lines of "If you demand a better product, we'll give it to you."

Education on nutrition and access to healthy foods in all areas would be great!

And I 100% agree with you on the vegan cat thing. Cats are carnivores, not feeding them meat is cruel.

The people selling the "magic" pills and powders just want to make a profit. A balanced vegan/vegetarian diet is easy and no supplements are needed. A common mistake people make is that because they follow a certain diet that they're healthy and not missing anything, this goes for omni and veg*n. It's pretty easy to lack many nutrients in any diet. The allure of those damn fries and (veggie or meat) burgers is strong

Food allergies suck. Is it all fruit?

Cheese is my downfall. They say there is something it in that makes it addicting, like opiates.

It's not hard. I personally don't do it, but know many who do. It's hard if you just quit all animal products cold turkey with no good recipes and no good convenience meals. You would adapt.

All fruit except citrus and some berries. Also eggplant and walnuts. It sucks because it didn't develop until I was older, so I know exactly what I'm missing.

:( Really, I'm sorry to hear that. I wonder why some people develop severe allergies, especially later in life. My niece was born with a huge list, feeding and shopping for her is an epic journey. Just from shopping for her, I understand how hard it can be to avoid certain foods. You wouldn't think some ingredients are in a product when they are. Do you carry an epi-pen?

I have an epi pen, but I suck at carrying it with me. Being super careful about what I eat is second nature to me now, so I kind of got blas? about the pen. Which, really, is stupid.

ETA I just noticed my sig. hahahahaha

I asked earlier somewhere else the difference between vegans and vegetarians and got the answer but why do they spell it with a star? Veg*n? Are they against the letter A also?

Oh and Im gonna go ahead and take this off topic for a minute: Dana, I like how you come back here to talk about this stuff without addressing what was going on before you backpeddaled out of here.

Thank you for posting a link to this site and calling us out as people who laugh and mock at the deceased. Really bitch? Are you not signed up to this site as well?
I don't care about what people eat, I don't give a shit what you wear. Hell, I don't give a shit whether you donate your organs or not, totally your choice.
BUT you made a comment that in my eyes was rude as fuck. Some of your vegan friends over there with that piece of celery up their asses have bought into your bullshit that you were attacked and basically cornered like you were being beaten to shit, but I don't buy your shit.

Get the fuck outta here with your fake ass crap and you know why I say this? Because I made two comments that werent even derogatory on that site and they banned me. I promise I wont be losing any sleep over it but hey, even the playing field here and tell your dipshit friends that the loss of meat in their diets have made them complete fucking morons.

I feel better. Now...can someone answer the whole *thing?

Also, when you put a star in a word like that, it means there are letters missing. So basically, veg*n can mean vegan or vegetarian. Also, Jesus H Christ.

i've wanted to do a juice fast for a long time, but haven't had the money for a juicer (great excuse, i know). but i should have one by the end of the week or early next week.

i'm watching forks over knives and it's pretty fascinating. if not eating meat ever again could mean i don't get breast cancer, or some other form of cancer, then i need to seriously consider it. cancer scares me and watching my family member's suffer makes me feel like it's inevitable.

I figured they thought the letter.A Was demeaning to their non human friends or some shit . Like "animal" is like a specist epithet or something.
On topic, my coworker used to make awesome vegetarian dishes that I loved. Shit is good if you know how to do it.

Yeah. Vegetarian = potential to be good. Vegan = tastes like socks.

The only exception to the second part would be Indian food. Some of it is vegan, most of it can be vegetarian and all of it is bangin.

I'm a carnivore but I do include vegetarian selections in my diet (mmmmm Quornnnnnn). I also cook vegetarian for my veg friends and fam.

My cousin is vegetarian and oddly enough, in about her 7th (?) trimester her doula told her she had to start integrating at least some chicken in her diet until the end of her pregnancy. Can't remember if it was low Iron and/or other nutrients.

I've mentioned this before but I have an acquaintance who's vegan (and was throughout her pregnancy) and it makes me sad that her child has never had a real cupcake.

There's supposed to be a connection between easier labor and protein intake. I definitely read that somewhere, just don't ask me where.

I had nothing to do with your ban. I didn't report your post either, I wasn't planning on it. Microbrien is better at articulating, hence why I haven't reply (yet). He summed up a lot for me.

I AM signed up here for a reason. Right before I posted the link on the other forum, I read another thread where people were laughing about how a woman died from the sunlight diet. That's not making light and joking about someone's death? I'm not opposed to that (I said out loud "What an idiot" when I read the thread title), my point was that I get the impression that people here don't get all choked up and sad about death. I was wrong in assuming people saw death the way I do. I'm sorry about that. I wasn't meaning that line to be insulting at all because I characterize myself that way. I've gotten into debates with people IRL about people dying because of their own stupidity. I've been called "morbid" and "cold" on the topic, that's why I fit in well with the threads where people expressed the same views on death (while it can be sad, it's part of life and it's better to deal with it rather than ignore it). I grew up watching a lot of True Crime tv and have a hard time personalizing things. I get the frustration on the other end of the debate, I really wasn't trying to stir the pot or come off as being on my high horse. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone, in my head it just calculates like this: "Save 1,000+ animals or 1 human? The 1,000+ makes more sense." To you it doesn't, but to me it does. I view animals as innocent creatures while adult humans I do not. Many create their own problems (poor lifestyle, leading to the need for organs. I know not all on the transplant list are there for that reason though). I still don't feel like I'm getting my meaning across well. That line was NOT meant to be an insult, really. I was wrong in assuming that people here didn't care about people in a general sense. Maybe I'm starting to understand you guys a little better now. While I think the name calling went too far, I want to apologize to those I offended. I tried to make it clear over and over that I wasn't trying to offend anyone, that I just had a different view on a topic.

    Veg*n = vegetarian OR vegan.

At one point my cousin was vegan then went back to vegetarian. For her birthday my aunt went out to get her a slice of vegan carrot cake. A slice. I think it ran her about 10 bucks. For a slice.

Could be. She had such a difficult time - not so much with the pregnancy itself but what turned out to be un-diagnosed colitis which cropped up around her 2nd month or so.
