Let's leave poor Colby alone, shall we? Also, let's see if we can talk about this without being self righteous or dicks. I have a whole big post I want to type, but I can't do it right now. Be back later.
I like beef and I like broccoli. Sometimes at the same time.
I know I don't eat healthy but at least I don't do fast food. So my wife saw a movie she says will change the way we eat. I'm scared to watch it.

I've got that movie on my Netflix queue PCP.
I'm an "omnivore", although I very rarely eat red meat. I stick to mostly seafood and poultry. I'm more interested in environmentally friendlier and sustainable ways to raise livestock. They do exist, it's just the meat industry is geared in such a way that to live in what is a more "natural" way (hormone free, free range, grass fed animals) costs about 4x as much, if my past experiences are any indication. It may be because I live in New York City, which isn't exactly known for it's lush green animal pastures lol, but supermarket ground beef is about 2 dollars a pound, while ground beef that meets the criteria up there is about 8.99 a pound. It's ridiculous and not doable for the vast majority of the population. Hell, it only started being doable for me. Don't even get me started on the cost of environmentally friendly fished seafood
This also ties into the whole idea of urban food deserts. I believe Dana mentioned that one pound of beef needs 12? 16? pounds of grain. You can't give a mother in Harlem a 12 pound sack of grain and expect her to know what to do with it. But the education and socioeconomic aspects of this are more Peavey's area of expertise. so I'll leave it alone.
One thing I was thinking about, and vehemently disagree with, is people who put their cats on vegetarian diets. You can make the argument that humans are geared towards being vegetarians (I don't agree, but you can say it), but a cat is built to be a carnivore, through and through. It goes against the nature of your animal to impose your beliefs on it. IMO of course.
There's tutorials about it online. It seems to involve a lot of supplements. I don't see how pills and powders can be healthier for the animal than meat their body has evolved for millions of years to process and survive on. And before anyone talks about how shitty most cat food is, my cats eat better than I do
Also, I saw this over on the other board, and want to address it:
I suppose omnis say those sort of things because many equate meat with food and think of the rest as filler.
I can't speak for Ron, because I'm reasonably certain 3 of his 5 food groups are buffalo wings, but:no. 1000x no. I love vegetables, even funky unpopular ones like broccoli rabe, swiss chard, brussel sprouts, fava beans, lentils, zucchini flowers, dandelion greens, calabasa, yucca etc. I grew up eating these, and cook them several times a week to this day. It's as ignorant a statement as saying vegetarians eat cardboard. Please.
I've seen a few programmes on the 'extreme' diets (human ones, no cats). Like vegan, raw.. those types, and they all seem to had draws full of magic pills and powders. I'm not saying they must all be like that, but surely if you need to take that many different things to make you healthy, there is something wrong with your chosen diet.
What's ironic is the assertion that meat is gonna kill me, yet the only things that can kill me dead in 5 minutes are fruit. Because I have a massive allergy![]()
ETA I think most people are vegan/vegetarian for moral/ethical reasons, and the supplements are a fair trade off in their opinion.
I was a vegetarian for a couple of years as a teenager but it was just a phase. I realised how awesome bacon was and came to my senses.
I eat meat now but not red meat and not fish. It has nothing to do with beliefs. The thought of bones in fish makes me want to vomit so I don't eat it. With meat I'm obsessed about it not being cooked properly so I tend not to eat it very often.
Who the hell would make their cat vegetarian??
I just don't think I could go veggie, I like meat too much. I do need to cut down on red meat.
I don't think I could do veggie. I like meat, and I always feel the need to replace one meat product with 6 veggies. I know I don't have to, but my family was always a meat and two veg lot until recently.
Ugh. I had to prepare squid in one of my food science courses. So gross. squid ink. Yuck.
I don't eat animals because I can't differentiate between species. Dogs and pigs are both intelligent. I think pigs are even smarter (yes bacon). I know people who eat raised dogs for food in their country just as we do cows and they don't bother me. But I never would. I just love almost all animals equally.
I won't eat fish because they're cool.I actually have reasons, but they're boring and long.

Vegetarian dogs/cats are evil. Absolutely evil. I know quite a few vegans and none of them would dare. That is animal cruelty. Plain and simple. You want a vegetarian animal, get a damn rabbit.

I know a women who screams and shouts about being vegan, in new leather boots. I get angry just thinking about her.
Calamari rocks.
Vegetarian I could maaaaaaaaaaybe do. Vegan, no. My body is seriously 90% cheese and I couldn't go without.
I used to work at a Fedex ship place and these guys used to ship their boxes through us: http://www.rawvolutionnyc.com/. One day he had some surplus so he gave it to me to check out (he wasn't pushy about it so I was like, ok cool). Some of the stuff was really good, the salads and gazpacho type soups especially, but do not tell me something made of cashew is cheese. Because it isn't, ever. Just call it cashew loaf or something and stop lying.
