I think they will get him on the state medical insurance. medicaid or whatever its called. Those hospitals are going to want to get paid, social workers usually get involved and since he had no income and is now disabled, he would qualify for a lot of resources. And by resources u mean basically the medical part of it. There are a lot if old people in nursing hinges that have no assets or anything so the astarte medical kicks in as a last resort and foots the bill. One of the main nursing homes here is 6k a month and the state pays it.

If this was true, all homeless people would be living much better in the United States. The truth is that once this stops being headline news, this guy is going to get dumped by an ambulance somewhere. All they need is one doc to say 'hey, he can get by on his own!' I have enough friends who work with mental institutions and low income medicine to know this sad cynicism is the truth.

Normally I would agree with Bowie and maybe at some point Mr. Poppo will return to the streets. I foresee Mr. Poppo will be the Poster Child of the Miami Dade's Political Machine, i.e. the Tourism promoters for Miami Dade, Miami and Miami Beach; and Jackson Memorial Hospital(a county hospital). Being a newsworthy item, Mr. Poppo will be cared for, for a long time.

I don't begrudge Mr. Popper, I just feel for the thousands of other homeless people I see when I help pass out food at night.

You read news stories all the time with 'where are they now angles' where they follow up on someone who made splashy headline news for a tragedy where you really felt empathy for them, only to discover they've been completely abandoned by all resources. I mean, look at hurricane victims.

It's the great republican way! Bootstraps! Only the wealthy deserve to survive! If this guy had been doing anything constructive with his life, he wouldn't be homeless! And so on.

Considering the overwhelming majority of homeless people already suffer from untreated mental illnesses and often, physical defects.

They have raised all of $15,000 so far... thats not gonna cut it. I'm totally interested to know what he'll look like in another month though.

I just read an article that was saying that he was up talking, walking and saying he wanted to eat Italian food and pizza and that he seemed to be in good spirits despite what has happened. His one eye is completly done for and they are hoping to be able to save the other eye but it was also severely damaged.

They did also mention that there is a fund set up and like Bowie, I agree that this fund wont last long. BUT they also did say that social services was looking into helping him find housing and he is eligible for state medical insurance. Plastic surgery, they said is something he might want to consider but I doubt that the state will foot the bill for that. The article also said that when they talked to him about the plastic surgery, that he was very 'logical' and just said 'we'll see'.

It's sad but it's reality I guess.

I mean, it's not cool at all what has happened to this guy and Im not into praising him because I don't even think we know much about him other than he was a homeless guy that got his face eaten off. I mean society doesnt owe him anything but it's just the way it works that the hospital, social services etc will try to help him.
And actually, I was thinking about this and even if they got him into low income housing and he was able to receive disability, I wouldnt imagine that his disability would be very much. Or social security, Im not sure if he qualifies for that, just sayin'. BUT he would have to be able to keep and maintain the housing and be able to live.
It's very possible that him getting his face ripped off, actually is saving his life by means of him being able to receive help.

Yeah but you know how it goes, we hear about this stuff and its very sad but then when it comes down to it, someone always complains. Im talking about tax payers per se. This situation is where I wouldnt throw my hands up in the air thinking tax dollars were paying for his care.

I fear you're right. People will move on to the next big shiny tragedy pretty quickly. I mean, look at how much attention was diverted from the Poppo story by the Luka Magnotta story. How do you forget about a guy ripping apart another guy in the middle of a Greyhound bus??

I sincerely hope Poppo gets continued help and support and free reconstructive surgery, especially if they can't save the sight in his remaining eye. He's got a daughter who thought he was dead until this story broke (she hadn't seen him since she was two). Maybe she can help?

Agreed. This is also why I say that he will be getting help because now they have an obligation to help him re-adjust to life. If it werent for this incident, he would still be sleeping on the streets but now, he actually has a foot in the door to receive aid.

We had a behavioral health building here right next to the hospital, the only one around here and they shut it down. Unbelievable. We needed that place because they took care of the people with major issues. Now all they do is take you to the hospital, have you strip down and wear scrubs and put you in one of the 3 tiny rooms they have for suicidal/mentally messed up people. Its not log after that they are discharged.

Uh, not everyone living in a loft is a rich person. The renovation of downtown L.A started with artists taking advantage of the cheap rent/dilapidated buildings. And then because of the artists, the area got nicer. However, there was no effort (much like the homeless who wander like zombies in Venice) to 'eliminate' hobos. From my experience, unlike the way gentrification effects the lower income rent payers, it's actually a 'boon' to the homeless to have wealthier people in the neighborhood, especially a heavily pedestrian-trafficked neighborhood. They are more inclined to get handouts--food and money. And many of the buildings that are reclaimed still have to have subsidized housing.
