World's youngest Grandmother is just 23 years old

    http://uk.lifestyle.yahoo.com/blogs/...82&fb_upsell=1
A 23-year-old woman is claiming that she is the world?s youngest grandmother.

Rifca Stanescu gave birth when she was just 12 years old and two years ago her daughter Maria had a baby at the age of 11.

Despite urging her daughter not to follow in her footsteps and stay in school, Stanescu told The Sun that Maria left to get married when she was just 10 and gave birth to her first child the following year.

"I am happy to be a grandmother but wished more for Maria," Stanescu told the paper.

Stanescu also revealed that she eloped with jewellery salesman Ionel Stanescu when she was 11 and he was 13.

She fled with her boyfriend because she was worried her father would force her to marry someone else in the village of Investi in Romania.

Her mother, also named Maria, became a great grandmother at just 40 years old.

Last month, the woman who is set to become Britain?s youngest grandmother at age 29, said that her daughter becoming a teen mum was ?her worst nightmare?.

Kelly John gave birth to her daughter, Tia, at age 14. Tia is now expecting her own child at the same age.

'My worst nightmare has always been that Tia would repeat my mistake and get pregnant young. [When I found out] I felt the colour drain from my face and all I could do was cry.' John told the News of the World.

I want more details! What country allows 10 year olds to get married?

After reading the thread on the Time breast feeding article. I wonder how an 11 year old breastfeeding in public would go over.

They're Roma (gypsies) living in Romania. This article, which includes pics of the family, explains it:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...mother-23.html

Gypsy wife becomes world's youngest grandmother... at 23

A gypsy wife has become the world's youngest grandmother - aged just 23.Rifca Stanescu, from the village of Investi, Romania, told how she gave birth to her daughter, Maria, while only 12. Despite her mother's pleas to stay in school, Maria gave birth to son Ion at the age of 11. Rifca, now 25, told the Sun: 'I am happy to be a grandmother but I wished something else for Maria - and something else for me.

'Ion is a good boy - and he is already engaged to a girl aged 8. Boys are always good to have - they don't have to suffer as much girls I think.'

Born in 1985, Rifca defied her family's wishes and ran away with jewellery seller Ionel Stanescu when she was 11 and he was 13.
A year after they were married, Rifca fell pregnant with Maria. She said: 'I wanted to marry him, so I agreed, and of course after we had spent the night together then there was no way anyone could separate us. I had been promised to another boy's family since I was two years old but I didn't want that.'

In gypsy culture virginity is greatly prized and women are married young so that new husbands can be sure their new wives are virgins who affect a good dowry from the families of prospective husbands. Loss of virginity means a deal is cancelled. She added: 'Before that there was a lot of fighting - once my father had even attacked my husband with a knife. He wanted him to pay 500,000 lei in compensation. My family even took me home but after three days I ran away again to be with him.'

After Maria's birth, Ionel's family paid Rifca's father a dowry and all was settled. Maria's birth made Rifca's mother a grandmother aged 40. Rifca said she begged daughter Maria to stay in school and finish her education. Maria decided to follow in her footsteps and marry herself. Within six months she too had fallen pregnant with Ion.

She told how in Romanian gypsy community it is common for couples to marry young.Rifca added: 'I did not try to stop my daughter getting married because this is the tradition, it's what happens.

The youngest British grandmother was an unnamed 26-year-old from Rotherham, Yorkshire whose 12-year-old daughter gave birth in 1999.

Because they are Roma, there are odds that these kids aren't as young as they're stating. They don't pay as much attention to birthdates.

But when I was living in the UK, they had specials on this all the time. I was like huh, I wouldn't be that proud.

At first I didn't get it, the origin of where the term 'Gypsy' came from for them, but after some wikiwork.. I get it now.

Although, I have only seen the shows with Gypsy's from West Virgina or somewhere like that.. you'd think they would have better reception in a larger city..

i think it's hard to explain... gypsies are becoming much less nomadic but tend to still live in groups and retain the same belief and values. but then you have to add in the fact that the youngsters are also influenced by the cultures around them and seem like they could just be normal everyday teens. but big city? no... working your boys when they are 8, letting the 10 y/o's drive around, no schooling past age 12? these are much more suited to small town ways of life, regardless of the bling!

this is just one girls opinion...

    BWAH! good job.

i worked at a bar in LA for a few years that was owned by a hungarian woman. she'd been bartending since she was 12 got married and knocked up young and moved to glendale. at age 55, everything about her and her children was blingy. i didn't know anything about gypsies then, but i wonder now if this family was.

My family were gypsies and I don't even get that show (lifestyle). Never seen the US version - just the UK one. When I first saw it I called my mum straight away and begged her "please, PLEASE tell me it wasn't like that!!!"

She said there was a level of over the top-ness but not of the gaudy magnitude of these more modern gypsies.

Glendale & Blingy go together like PB&J!

The other night, very late, I ventured into the all night grocery with my Mom and low & behold were stealthy shiney gypsy's. They saved a lot of money that evening putting food underneath their skirts and eating down the isle. What was the biggest tell was the kids they were using for distraction.

Well they weren't blingy, that's for sure!

They did make both local papers for being the largest family in all of Darlington - so large, they required TWO bomb shelters.

Gypsies have given me the shivers ever since I read Thinner by Richard Bachman (Stephen King's alter ego).

    Did you see the movie?!

My family were British gypsies but there were plenty of Roma gypsies about as well. The Roma's would go door to door trying to sell carnations or roses. One tried to sell my uncle one and he told her to piss off. Then she put a curse on him

British/Irish gypsies are different - they don't believe in the whole curses hokum (at least my family didn't). They were just basically nomads that would specialize in something or other. The "Hoarkers" (sp?) would sell stuff, be it fish or produce, or things of that nature. The "Tinkers" (my family) would create/fix things. My g-grandad was a basket weaver. He learned the trade from his dad.

Okay, the US gypsy show is just a bunch of West Virginia hillbillies. The difference between the UK and US version is massive. We watch both and seriously the US one is a giant train wreck, they just need to call it My Big Fat Hillbilly Wedding.

I likened it to the Wild Whites of West Virginia.
