Adam Klynsma (26) died when a 1,600 steel beam fell on him at work

Adam Daniel Klynsma, 26, Rapid City, died Friday, April 27, 2012, in a work-related accident.

Adam is known for his strong sense of self worth. He would not change for anyone, no matter the grief that he sometimes endured because of the things he loved. He will always be remembered for his attitude of "all or nothing." When he decided to do something he immersed himself in it, completely. When asked why he sacrificed so much of his time and money for the Pokemon League he replied, "My love of the game and the kids who play it. It gives the kids something to do to keep them off the streets and away from alcohol and drugs." He will be remembered for his love of metal working, Pokemon, Cosplay, SodakCon and the SCA. Through his skills with a sewing machine, his knowledge of metal and his patience with leather, he would create his own costumes and armor. Adam would always be ready to lend a helping hand to build a new game strategy or design a new piece of armor. But he would never do the work for you. He pushed people to learn how to do these things by showing and helping whenever necessary.

Adam we love you and will miss you dearly. The world is poorer for losing you. Say "Hi" to your grandparents.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Klynsma of Newell; his father, Ken Klynsma of Rapid City; four brothers, David Klynsma of Spearfish, Blake Klynsma of Rapid City, Allexander Klynsma of Illinois, Gavin Klynsma of Newell; three sisters, Heather Klynsma of Sioux Falls, Cassidy Klynsma of Newell, Holly Klynsma of Redfield; maternal grandparents, Myrna and Bob Koeppe of N. Sioux City, S.D.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and then for one hour before services on Wednesday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brent Reeves officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

There will be a celebration of Adam's life with fellowship and a meal at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Dakota Life Church, 321 Sisk Ave., in Newell.

"It's the salt water that changes the Rainbow's pretty colors to gray." "And his colors never come back?" "No, once he's been to the sea he's changed forever. The Steelhead can come back home here, stay for the rest of his days, and live among the other Rainbow trout, but he'll always be different because of where he's been." Morsi, Pamela. Garters.

What kind of work related accident, I wonder.

On his FB he mentioned being a welder.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigated on Monday the accident that killed a TrueNorth Steel employee on April 27 at the Rapid City steel fabricator business.

Adam Klynsma, 26, died Friday morning when a 12-foot steel beam weighing 1,600 pounds fell on him, Capt. Marty Graves with the Pennington County Coroner’s office said. Emergency personnel were called to the business at 3272 Lien St. at about 8:30 a.m. Friday and Klynsma was pronounced dead at the scene. The workplace fatality was reported to the regional OSHA office in Bismarck, N.D., at 2:30 p.m. Friday. An OSHA investigator was in Rapid City Monday, according to Eric Brooks, assistant director of the Bismarck office.

TrueNorth’s safety director did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday afternoon. According to the company website, the firm was founded in 1945 as Fargo Tank and makes a diverse portfolio of steel products.

His mother said Klynsma, a graduate of Western Dakota Technical Institute’s welding program, had worked at TrueNorth for a few years.

“I’m still in shock,” Linda Klynsma of her son’s death.

She said Adam’s metal working and sewing skills that allowed him to create elaborate costumes for his favorite gaming hobbies were talents that were apparent early in life. “As a young child, he loved to create, to do, to tear apart, to fix things,” she said.

“At Halloween time, he would create his own costumes,” she said, recalling the year he made an exact replica of the Star Wars character R2-D2 out of cardboard. “He was probably too big to be going trick-or-treating, but he so enjoyed making those costumes.”

He got his sewing skills, as well as his creativity, from his mom. “He gets a lot of that from me. I make elaborate quilts,” she said. “He was so creative that he’d make a costume without a pattern, just from a picture.”

Adam Klynsma will be buried Wednesday in one of those costumes, she said.

“We’re just going to miss him a lot,” she said.
