After following the whole gun discussion, I think like several people I probably would freeze when it came to shooting someone. Well, maybe.
I haven't had enough experience with guns to really know. But I plan to take lessons this year and get my CHL...just in case I get more weird stalkers in the future.

But like Monter I think that I could easily lose my shit and attack someone if I was in danger. Like my story about when I was mugged-I didn't even hesitate.
Once I get past being scared and am then just pissed off, you really wouldn't want to mess with me. That dude had messed with me on the wrong night, as I was having a completely shitty day where everything was already going wrong and I wasn't going to deal with his bullshit.

If in the future I am every attacked again, I don't think I'd hesitate at all and would do everything in my power to do some damage and get away.

But the gun thing, yeah, not quite sure yet. I'll give updates whenever I start taking some lessons.

Ron...I know what you mean. I always wanted to be a policeman, but being a girl I always just pictured stopping these big ass hells angels and having one of them laugh and say "Awww. Look at Policeman BARBIE" Then just drive away.

I recently moved 2 hours away from anyone I know. I was told not to let ANYONE know I lived alone. When someone comes to your door do not let them inside. I do not have a peephole on my door, so I never know who it is on the other side of the door. I keep the storm door locked and open the regular door and talk to them through the storm door. Most of the time they are sales people. I have a recording on my answering machine left by a male friend that says I am sorry WE are not available at this time with no name just phone number. My house is locked at all times, even when I am home. Do not ever feel you are a bother to law enforcement. If you do not feel safe call them immediately.

As far as purchasing a handgun, of course that is your decision. Just make sure you are a person capable of using it with no hesitation. I purchased a handgun for protection and also had a permit to carry. I was attacked outside of a diner. I was in the back waiting for my girlfriend to show and parked where I could see both roads coming in so I could watch for her. I was more confident back then and was not paying attention to my surroundings. Suddenly, I was grabbed from behind, hand over my mouth and something pointed into my back. I had my purse and the handgun was easy to get a hold of. However, I did not know what he was holding on me. Finally he said he had a knife and if I did not do exactly what he said he would "cut my face up so bad no one would want to look at me again". I said "Okay, whatever you want" and turned slowly to look at him with the handgun now in my hand pointed at his stomach. He merely took his fist, punched me in the face grabbed my gun and was pointing it at my head when a family minivan happened to pull up behind us high beams on...He kicked me and ran like hell...with my handgun. This is the best I can recall of that night. I honestly was in shock and tried to put things together the best I could. The family had seen some of it which is why they pulled up like they did. Since he had not threatened to kill me I was not comfortable just pulling out a gun and shooting someone dead. At that close range he would have been dead. My girlfriend had talked me into a 357 magnum instead of a nice lighter weight 38 that I thought was more "lady like". To be honest..I realize now, that I could not have pulled that trigger even if he had threatened me with death. I am a pussy. (not in the good way)(smile).

I did see a therapist after this incident. His conclusion was that I value other people's lives more than my own. He stated he had no doubt that I would kill for my son. He said I might even kill to protect a complete stranger, but he believes that I feel my life is not worthy enough to kill for. I have no idea why I just shared that.

If you get a gun just please...BE careful you can use it with no hesitation....Make sure you are in a position that it cannot be taken from you and used against you.....Take lessons at a firing range so you are a good shot and used to handling it.

The conclusion of my story is eventually the guy was caught. My handgun was found. He was a serial rapist that had been traveling different areas raping and attacking women. He had killed before. I realize my first paragraph was simple common sense things and there are some folks rolling their eyes right now. I have become afraid, though. Every time you feel yourself thinking that you are being too concerned when you see the same man over and over, please remember what happened when I was unconcerned and not aware of the environment around me. I was lucky that time. I haven't always come out unscathed, though. When you are faced with rape or death the sexual experience means nothing to you. Rape is a crime of violence and if you come out alive you win. The way I look at it is when a man rapes you he takes absolutely nothing from you. Sex is only special when it is our decision to give it up. When you want to get as close as possible to the person you love and hold them in your heart and soul. When someone forces that from you he is taking nothing but a piece of ass. Since we aren't making it a lovely experience for him he is taking a bad piece of ass. So at the end and alive.....I feel like I still came out of it a winner.
I have NEVER shared this with another human being besides my therapist, so please don't be too harsh on me.

Thanks for sharing. You said a lot that made me rethink how I should feel about my past. That's a good thing.

Ron, I know my kids know that guns are dangerous. My kids have been around guns for a long time and we have taken them shooting. I said before a while back that even my 5 yr old has a .22. We doesnt get to walk around with it or anything. We help him hold it, we help him aim, we load and re-load it and we drill it into their heads that guns are to be pointed downwards.

I think that even with having kids that do know about the gun basics, you still can't be 100% positive that one of them wont ever get a hold of a pistol and tinker with it while we arent watching. They still have curiosities. Even tho we teach our kids safety, it doesnt mean they are always going to listen when they arent around us. That's scary.

Actually, my husband and I were just talking about it and I have this tall filing cabinet that locks. There is a key for it and it's put just a bit higher than the filing cabinet but he went and put the pistol with the clip in, so it's a loaded gun but it is locked up. It's a better scenario than keeping that loaded pistol in your nightstand imo where there are younger kids.

I feel the same way. I don't think I could ever shoot someone but I don't think I'd hesitate to beat the shit out of someone who harmed someone I love.

A couple of years ago a man with a knife got into our house and threatened to kill my housemate and I. My housemate wanted to barricade us in the kitchen (which is in the basement) with the fridge/freezer. I remember grabbing a badminton racket and yelling that we weren't going to be murdered in our basement by a psycho and went after the guy. Afterwards, my housemate said that I was much more frightening than the guy with the knife.

I don't think I've ever seen what Ron actually looks like.
    Or maybe I have, I can't remember.

Either way, he always seemed to be the best choice for several reasons, ha.

@Leapfreak- I am hoping I would be more frightening than the intruder as well. I have Borderline personality disorder (this may be relevant or not) and I have been known to lose my shit when I've gotten really angry. I've destroyed several phones and beloved objects this way /:
I turn into the Hulk or something because at the time I don't really realize I am acting totally insane. Then I cry over my broken phone after it's all over like it wasn't even my fault

Like I mentioned in another reply, I went to the range/store today just to look around. I think next time I go I'll see if I can find a CHL class.
You don't really need the CHL but the training would be good.

See, this is definitely why I need more knowledge on guns before even considering one.
But I was told a CHL is necessary if I want to keep it in my car. I occasionally have to go near 5th ward in Houston so I figured maybe I'd want to keep it in my glove compartment just in case. But if I don't have to waste $200 to get a CHL then great!

But lessons are a must, I'm doing some searching to find the best place.

I'm in the Dallas /Ft Worth area and live alone, luckily I don't have any creepers even though I live in a slightly bad complex. I sleep with a baseball bat next to my bed and would knock someone's head off their shoulders if they came in. I have thought about getting a gun, I can shoot very well, but I'm nervous having one around my daughter. But if I didn't have her I would totally have some sort of firearm. Yay TEXAS!!

Dallas/Fort Worth has so many bad complexes, haha. Well, Houston too of course. I am lucky to live in the suburbs where my complex is generally pretty safe. They haven't had many other issues since they've been built.
But maybe I need to start sleeping with a baseball bat next to my bed as well, I think that might be my best bet since it'll be awhile before I can get a gun anyway.

I prefer Texas over Florida though. I'm pretty sure if I lived in Florida I'd be dead by now.
Just saying...all these stories I've heard from there.

No, it's not necessary but it's not just a class on having a permit, they also teach you basic self defense (some do anywas). You can legally have a firearm in your vehicle as long as it is visible. I can drive around town with a pistol on myy dashboard and thats legal but if it's in my glove compartment, thats a huge ticket and possibly my gun taken from me.

I was looking for this beer commercial where a lady cop shows up at a party to tell the guys to turn it down and they think she's a stripper.

"Guys, we can do this the easy way or the hard way."

    "THE HARD WAY!"

(into radio) "looks like I'm gonna need a paddy wagon."

    "PARTY WAGON!"

But putting "girl cop" into the search engine just got me a bunch of police brutality videos, so now my mood is ruined.

The only people I look menacing to are cops.
"He's coming right at us! Shoot to kill!"

Oh, and cab drivers. And maybe if I'm dating your daughter.

The craziest part is that people in the more secluded areas are the ones that are usually more worried.

And being female doesn't help either.

Clearly we know that people are insane and it's better to not trust just anyone, but at the same time I am rather shocked this conversation has gone on for so long.

I respect your issue Megan, but it seems to me that if we can go on about a topic without any real evidence of someone trying to harm you.. it's paranoia. We can feed into it forever. Seems to me you need to change your locks and move on with your life. If anything were to happen to you, you have a good thread here as proof you were not just paranoid but in fact spot on.

Locks have been changed, and for the most part I've moved on from it-just being extra aware of my surroundings.
But I think this discussion turned more into a gun discussion in the end, which is nice, because it was running through the back of my mind and hearing everyones different opinions and stories has been helpful.

    That would be pretty scary.
But thankfully no, no ouija boards. I've always been too afraid to use one whether they really work or not.
