A Trafalgar mother with possible mental problems told police she drowned her 3-year-old son, and officers believe she may have then been seeking suicide by cop.
Officers were called to the woman’s apartment at Trafalgar Pointe Apartments around 9 p.m. Monday. Police officials say they were familiar with the apartment and the mother, 33-year-old Amanda Smith, as she’s made around 200 calls to Johnson County authorities. Police described those calls as "crazy."
About three dozens of those calls have been made in the past three weeks. “The child is in a better place,” Smith reportedly told police dispatchers when she called 911 Monday night. A later call from Smith’s mother told authorities that Smith said she had done something to her son that couldn’t be undone, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office officials said.
Smith was being held Tuesday at the Johnson County Jail without bond on a charge of murder and a charge of attempted murder for swinging an ax at a police officer, officials say.
After police responded to the apartment Monday night, they found the boy in a back bedroom on a bed. Smith reportedly was hiding in a bathroom and came out swinging an ax at officers. Just last week, police officers asked Smith’s mother to take away an ax they said she’d been sleeping with on a regular basis. Smith’s mother did, but apparently her daughter had another.
In her apartment, police found evidence of a woman who they say likely suffers from mental health issues. Every door had a padlock. Photos of children — including her now deceased 3-year-old boy — were turned upside down. Tuesday morning, it wasn’t immediately clear who had custody of the boy, but one woman who says she’s friends with the boy’s father told WISH-TV there have been custody disputes in court.
There will be an autopsy for the boy, but authorities didn’t know when. Police officials say their preliminary investigation leads them to believe the boy did drown.
