I read somewhere too that they were going to be flying flags at half mast. WTF. For real? I mean, it's sad that she died, I get that but lowering the flag? It's not like she is some huge popular politician that invented a cure for Aids and Cancer.

After the untimely death of Michael Jackson, his estate made a fortune due to a sudden renewed interest in his catalogue. According to insiders, however, the same will not happen with Whitney Houston.

"She was broke -- her label gave her advances," a record company insider told me. "And unlike Michael, you have to remember that Whitney didn't write any of those massive hits. They were songs that Clive Davis told her to sing and she did."

One of Houston's biggest hits, "I Will Always Love You," was actually written by Dolly Parton, who will receive the writer's and publisher's rates when the song undoubtedly gets a boost in radio and television performances.

"On records, the typical mechanical royalty paid to the writer/publisher is about 8 cents per radio performance," a successful songwriter told me. "That would all go to Dolly. Whitney is only the singer. She receives an advance from the record company based upon anticipated album sales. Figure that's around $2.00 per album. But all of the costs to record the album, promote the album, videos, etc. are all recouped from the artist's share."

As in Houston's case, it is very possible for artists to sell millions of records and end up owing the record label money. In fact, most artists don't make money from record sales, but rather from ticket sales -- a revenue stream that will no longer be a source of income for Whitney's estate.

"Whitney was living off of advances -- loans from the record company -- and had been [for] quite some time," the insider said. "Most likely the estate owes the record company a ton and future sales will be used to pay back that loan before any money goes to the estate. The songwriters, however, will make a bundle."

    Friend's FB post-

I just worked with her a few months ago on what would have been her comeback. She looked fantastic, was in great spirits and happy. Tragic she won't be able to see it through, but I'm happy to know she went out having turned it all around. RIP Whitney.

I bet olive oil filled bubble baths at the Beverly Hilton are pretty expensive. So is spending the entire 2000s supporting you and your husbands crack habit. I'm sure that Bodyguard soundtrack money went a long way, but that was over 20 years ago...

Meanwhile Dolly Parton is making out like a bandit on this deal, and while I know she did write that song, the way she sung it SUCKED compared to Whitney's version.

I'm glad she's making out like a bandit, Dolly Parton is awesome. I want to hang out with her.

I have seen the future and I'm fairly relieved to say, it looks nothing like me.

Oh hell. I want to be her. The woman looks like a bimbo, but she has a mind like a steel trap, and is apparently a genuinely nice person.

I wondered about Whitney's money issues? Her hotel room went for $375 a night which didn't seem so much compared to the suites stars stay in...

Compared to Whitney she sucked. I mean, Dolly sings it in this light, airy, twangy voice, whereas Whitney bellowed out the notes with power and feeling. And it's a song about eternal love, not honky-tonk. It needed to be sung by someone with soul who can wail.

Yea, that's like average NYC hotel room price. You'd get a 27" screen for that kind of money.

This is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen you say. Dolly's version is infused with emotion and Whitney's is just power vocals blasting. They're almost two entirely different songs based on the renditions.

Dolly Parton WROTE IT, numnuts. Me thinks she knew the proper way it was supposed to be sung. It's a country song. You don't like or know about country, that's obvious.

No, it's different. I've always disliked her version because I think her blasting vocals overwhelm the power behind the song. It's to each their own.

Wow, really? I was ready to get blasted for being a moron neanderthal since I liked Whitney's version better.
Now I dunno what to say.

They are different enough that I think it's unfair to declare one 'better' than the other. I appreciate Whitney's version because she made the song her own, instead of just a cover.

See, I understand the "whitney is better" argument, because she undoubtedly has a more powerful voice and more range than Dolly. But Bowie is dead on, imo. Hearing that song from a soon-to-be-ex evokes two very different responses:
Dolly Parton version: Man, that's really sweet. I'm so glad they're being wonderful and mature about this breakup and I also wish them well in the future. I will look back on them with fondness.
Whitney Houston: Holy shit, bitch is crazy. Why is she yelling at me? I'm filing a PFA, like yesterday, before she starts boiling bunnies and writing me love letters signed in blood.

I have seen the future and I'm fairly relieved to say, it looks nothing like me.

    I can agree with that.

That would definitely explain why I would like it better.

Exactly. I enjoyed the power of Whitney's version, but I always felt like she missed Dolly's point...
