I wonder if maybe they were asking their dad more direct questions too. I am sure they might not have completely understood what was going on, but they had a good idea. The children, at least the older boy, Charlie, had reached the age where they may have been giving away information, Bremner said.
"I know that to be true in this case because as recently as Christmas, the boys told their grandparents, 'Mommy's in the mine. If we go to the mine, we'll find Mommy,'" she said.
Authorities have searched mines in Utah and Nevada for Cox-Powell, she said.
Cox-Powell's sister, Denise, told HLN the children had started "opening up and talking to my parents about what happened that night," in recent months.
"The boys really, once they started opening up to our family, they started closing down on their dad," she said.
My theory. He was abusing the kids and Susan confronted him so he killed her.
I heard about this late last night on the local news, and I still cannot believe it. I've followed this case since she first went missing and knew all along that Josh Powell was guilty, but I never thought he'd blow up his fuckin kids.
RIP Braden and Charlie :(
I don't think there can be any doubt now that he murdered her. If he was an innocent okay guy cracking under pressure, he would have killed himself while the kids were at their grandparents. What a selfish bastard.

Butchered by the man they loved: Missing Utah woman's crazed husband 'chopped' his sons with hatchet before blowing up the house
Josh Powell, husband of missing Utah woman Susan, killed himself and their two young sons in house explosion
The two children had been living with their grandparents since September
Authorities said Powell planned deadly fire for some time, donating sons' books and toys, and sending final emails to acquaintances
Wrote in one email that he couldn't live without his boys, authorities said
Autopsy shows boys had hatchet wounds on hands and necks
The grisly autopsy results for the two boys who were killed by their father Josh Powell in a deliberate house explosion show that they suffered ‘chop injuries’ on their bodies.
Though smoke inhalation was listed as the primary cause of death for seven-year-old Charles and five-year-old Braden, wounds were found on the brothers' bodies showing what the medical examiner described as ‘chop marks.’
Investigators found a hatchet in the ruins of the house and said Charles was struck on his neck, and his brother had injuries to both his head and his neck.
It was also revealed today that Powell had been planning the deadly house fire for some time.
He sent out several emails to acquaintances minutes before the deadly blaze. In one email, he wrote how he couldn't stand to live without his boys, authorities said. He also dropped off his sons' toys to various charities throughout the area.
Also today, the boys' grandparents Chuck and Cindy Cox slammed authorities for allowing their grandchildren to be sent on a court-ordered visit to his house.
Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said Josh Powell sent long emails to some people, including his cousin and pastor, with instructions such as where to find his money and how to shut off his utilities.
However, none of the emails - some of which were sent just before the monstrous fire - said anything about what happened to his wife, and were sent just before the huge fire.
'They do show that he was intending on doing this before it occurred,' Sgt. Troyer said. 'We believe he planned this event out and had taken certain steps. This is definitely a deliberate, planned out event.'
He said that authorities found two, five-gallon gasoline cans inside the home. A five-gallon can was spread throughout the house and used as an accelerant in the huge blaze.
Another can was found by the bodies, he said.
Josh Powell was the only person-of-interest in the on-going investigation into his wife Susan’s 2009 disappearance and the boys had been living with their grandparents since they were granted custody in September.
He was also under investigation to see if he was involved at all with his father, Steven Powell’s, arrest for voyeurism and child pornography.
Grandparents Chuck and Cindy Cox slammed authorities today for allowing them to be sent on a court-ordered visit to their crazed father’s house.
They revealed today that their grandsons Charlie and Braden Powell did not want to go to the home of their father, who they suspected of killing the boys’ mother Susan who disappeared two years ago.
In a decision that is bound to haunt her for the rest of her life, Mrs Cox admitted that she encouraged her young grandsons to go to the house where they would be murdered.
Mr Cox said that Powell’s attitude in recent months scared them into thinking that he may do something to harm the children- a premonition that tragically came to fruition.
‘We stated our fear many times, that if he was feeling desperate, that he would possibly kill himself and the boys, that this kind of thing could happen,’ Mr Cox told People magazine.
‘They were all aware of our fears - that he would take a cowardly way out,’ he told the magazine.
‘If he felt there was no way out, that he wouldn't let anyone else have them. They were possessions to him.’
‘Look what happened,’ Mrs Cox said through tears on Monday.
The Coxes said that on Sunday, before the court-ordered case worker arrived to bring the boys to their father’s rented home in Tacoma, they were playing happily in the grandparents home.
‘But I knew that they're supposed to be able to see their dad.’
Susan’s sister Denise Cox also spoke about the unthinkable tragedy. She told CNN’s Nancy Grace today that the boys were forbidden by their father to talk about their mother or even mention her name.
Ms Cox said over the last few months, Charles and Branden had started to talk about her to her parents, who would then relay the information to Denise.
She speculated that Josh drugged Susan preceding her death ‘so it didn’t seem unnatural for the boys when he took her.’
Ms Cox added: ‘I believe he told them they were going to go look for mines and I believe he buried her somewhere out wherever he went.’
It was not the first time that Charlie and Braden had been accompanied by a case worker to their supervised visits with their father.
‘There had been previous visits and they had gone fine,’ social services spokesman Thomas Shapley told MailOnline.
The case worker arrived at the house and the boys and as the case worker approached, Powell slammed the door in her face and locked it so that she could not get in.
She banged on the door and windows and he would not respond.
‘She went back to the car and called her supervisor and 911. It’s fortunate that she went back to the car because that’s when the house exploded. If she hadn’t she would have probably lost her life as well,’ Mr Shapley said.
There will be at least three investigations into the incident: law enforcement officials will conduct a criminal inquiry, the department of social and health services will do an internal ‘staffing’ investigation, and then they will also have a formal child fatality review.
The child fatality review is mandated by Washington state law and will involve external investigators.
Social services spokesman Mr Shapley said the case worker who was with the children was not a Child Protective Services employee but a contract worker with a private agency, called Foster Care Resources Network.
He said it was very common for case workers to be contracted from other companies.
‘People need to understand that in Washington state, the courts make the decisions on visitation. We were following their ruling,’ Mr Shapley said in defence of the fact that the children were brought to Mr Powell’s home.
Powell's brother-in law Kirk Graves, 39, said the family was stunned by the news.
'We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don't expect it from a father,' he said.
'I think this was a last-ditch effort on his part to hurt everyone around him and escape all of the problems,’ Mr Graves told People magazine.
He thinks that the revelation that Charlie had started talking about the details of the evening when Susan disappeared played into Josh's decision to kill his children.
'They were becoming more fun, more vocal. They were acting like little boys again, which we hadn't seen in a while. … I imagine that part of Josh's motivation was, what could he do to hide that story?'
He told the Salt Lake Tribune that he takes the explosion as an admission of guilt in Susan's case.
'In my personal opinion this is Josh's admission, that he did it. I know others won't interpret it that way.'
Steve Downing, a lawyer for Susan Powell's parents Chuck and Judy Cox said: 'It's the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening.'
'They are beyond devastated. They always feared Josh would do something like this.'
The boys' direct relatives are not the only ones struggling with the news, as teachers and parents of Charlie's classmates attempt to explain the shocking tragedy.
'Try to explain to my children how anybody could do something like this, let alone a parent,' said Stacy Skoog, mother of Charlie's classmate Madison Skoog.
'It's just been really difficult,' she told local news site KOMO.com.

i read about the chopping part and was just so lost for words. The explosion was the only thing that i kept thinking about. I was thinking, okay so he was going to kill them but hopefully it was super fast and they didnt suffer teribly.
With the new reports of mutilating these kids, it just brings this to a whole new level of wtf.
here's a long article it's pretty sad i feel sorry for the grandparents.

o.m.g. just when you thought it couldn't possibly get any worse. I don't have words for how despicable this man is/was.

Seriously. This just breaks my heart. I read an article that said the preliminary cause of death was smoke inhalation, so those boys weren't dead after their father chopped at them. The one boy had chop marks on his hands, so he was probably trying to block the chops.![]()
That is what tears me up!! The fear those poor kids must have went through!!
Horrible. He must have pulled the axe as soon as the door was locked?
Fucking hell. The thing that keeps running through my head is those poor kids...How can you be terrified of your dad and love him all at once? :sigh:
That's what I thought. Only a few moments passed between the time he shoved the kids into the house and the explosion, so he must have struck them with the hatchet immediately upon locking the door and then lit the match. The hatchet adds a whole new level of horror to this nightmare.
Yeah, this is helping my mood today. OMFG with this guy. Those poor children. Those poor grandparents. I can't even take this.
