A new Lego line for girls is offensive, critics say

Lego toys have always seemed pleasantly gender-neutral. Perhaps that's why the new Lego Friends line for girls has triggered a fair bit of protest from some health and equal-rights organizations.

The new line, whose characters sport slim figures and stylish clothes, will contribute to gender stereotyping that promotes body dissatisfaction in girls, said Carolyn Costin, an
eating disorders specialist and founder of the Monte Nido Treatment Center in Malibu.

Online petitions have been started to protest the line, which includes a Butterfly Beauty Shop and a Your Fashion Designer Workshop. The International Assn. of Eating Disorder Professionals said the toys were "devoid of imagination and promote overt forms of sexism."

The toys send girls a message "that being pretty is more important than who you are or what you can do," Costin said in a statement.

Denmark-based Lego Group, however, said the Friends line was a response to consumer demand.

"We heard very clear requests from moms and girls for more details and interior building, a brighter color palette, a more realistic figure, role play opportunities and a story line that they would find interesting," Mads Nipper, executive vice president of the privately held firm, said in a statement. "We want to correct any misinterpretation that Lego Friends is our only offering for girls. This is by no means the case. We know that many girls love to build and play with the wide variety of Lego products already available."

Haha, seems pretty reasonable to me. Men are firemen and doctors, but women serve drinks, get their hair done, and go to spas.

    The Kim Kardashinan playset?

    Noooo wait.....

I understand women dont want to be confined to baking and beauty parlors, but Lego also made one girl a scientist and one an animal lover which seems okay to me.

Thats so terrible why would they even think thats okay?

Its like that old navy shirt for little girls they had to pull because it said "Im too pretty to do homework" and people were pissed.

But what was she wearing? That's what makes me mad. They make these dolls that "have professional careers," yet still dress them kind of slutty. Lawyers, teachers, vet techs, nurses, all in short skirts and high heels.

"It's the salt water that changes the Rainbow's pretty colors to gray." "And his colors never come back?" "No, once he's been to the sea he's changed forever. The Steelhead can come back home here, stay for the rest of his days, and live among the other Rainbow trout, but he'll always be different because of where he's been." Morsi, Pamela. Garters.

i have gone on and on in many a different thread about how i hate there seem to be less and less gender neutral toys and how i miss the old days where there was no boys and girls sides of toys r us. i heard about these legos on npr awhile ago (http://www.npr.org/2011/12/15/143724...d-girls-market) and i thought it was interesting that they dropped that much research into developing these products. i can't imagine that they'd be any more offensive than most of the shit marketed to girls. nothing can be worse than those bratz dolls that were wildly popular and might still be. those things were way worse than barbie. barbie is to call girl as bratz doll was to street walker.

mr. man's daughter is 3 and loves lego. she's obviously not at the building point yet, but she likes to play with the sets when they're all put together. she started with the cars set and recently picked out one of the star wars sets at random at the toy store. like, he had no influence, she just picked it out and said THIS ONE, doing her daddy proud. she got even more excited when he showed her the movie and now the empire strikes back is one of the movies in the heavy rotation.

i miss the days of building whatever with whatever random lego were around vs. having to follow some crazy diagram.

OMG, this was my favorite toy when I was a kid:

I used to tell the little girl on the back door "Will you please stop looking in my door, I said I couldn't play today".

I had the parking lot, the saloon(or maybe my cousin had that one), the house, and the sesame street one.

Little People I had the Main St. Village set - both sides of the street connected at the end by a removable traffic light/bridge thingy.

The dog was my favourite :)

i had the van/vw bus. it was one of my favorite toys. the people would bounce up and down when you rolled it around. i need to dig around my parents' garage and find it again. i know it still exists.

the new choke-free version of these guys totally suck though.
