No! I'd already be in enough trouble if anyone saw my search history and I was a suspect for something.

A MAN who faces child porn charges along with his fiancee after sparking a 21-day national manhunt has appeared in a Victorian court.

Craig Stanley appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a brief file hearing this afternoon.
Mr Stanley, along with fiancee Rebecca Michels, was arrested last week after the couple had been hiding out in a remote bush camp, 400km north-west of Melbourne.
The Langwarrin couple were charged with sex crimes involving a minor aged between 10 and 16.
Mr Stanley remained silent throughout the 10-minute hearing.
But his lawyer told the court he planned to apply for bail on Tuesday, November 27.
Ms Michels is expected to appear at the same court later today.
Police swooped on the pair after a tip-off from campers who recognised them.
Mr Stanley was carrying a rucksack and buying supplies from a local supermarket when he was nabbed.
He then led police about 6km to his 25-year-old fiancee, at Horseshoe Bend camping ground in Little Desert National Park, where she was arrested.
Both were taken to Horsham police station for questioning, but refused to comment.
They were charged with indecent acts with a child under 16 and making, possessing and transmitting child pornography.
The couple are believed to have left their home shortly after police raided the property, informally questioning them and seizing computers on October 27.
They conducted the raid after an alleged victim contacted officers.

A WOMAN who went on the run with her fiance after a child porn raid on their home pleaded with people to alert the police so they would be found, a magistrate heard today.

Sen-Det Rosemary Ross told a bail hearing that seized computer files revealed 76 images of a naked and semi-naked Rebecca Michels, 25, and in a number of photographs she was posing with a 10-year-old girl.

Thousands of other child pornography images, some of the most extreme and upsetting kind, had been found on computers taken from their Frankston home.

Sen-Det Ross said that after 21 days on the run Ms Michels waited until co-accused and partner Craig Stanley, 28, left their camp site to obtain supplies before revealing to members of the public that they were fugitives.

Ms Michels said that if Mr Stanley found out police were on to them he would "do a runner or harm himself'' and she said he would never be found because he was army trained.

Sen-Det Ross said that when police arrived at Dimboola she told them they lived on carp and baked beans and they planned to survive on $100 a week which would last them until 2012.

"She was aware police were looking for them both but they did not want to be found and wanted to spend as much time together until police found them both, because she loved him,'' the detective told Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Dan Muling today granted bail to Ms Michels after hearing her father would put up a $100,000 surety and a prosecution submission they did not believe she would offend again while on bail.

Mr Muling ordered that Ms Michels live with her family in Darwin, she was ordered to forfeit her passport and he also said she could not contact her co-accused or access the internet except for work.

Ms Michels and Mr Stanley were arrested at a bush camp, 400km northwest of Melbourne on November 18

Mr Stanley was nabbed while shopping for groceries in a Dimboola supermarket.
They were charged with making, possessing and transmitting child pornography, and committing indecent acts with a child under 16.

Ms Michels, who is tiny and has a child-like stature, smiled and nodded from the prisoner's dock to her father, Ross McAdie, who travelled to Melbourne for the bail hearing.

Sen-Det Ross said the FBI alerted Australian Federal Police that a number of child pornography images had been uploaded to a website from an email address in Australia that contained the word "lolitasforever''.

On October 27 police raided the Langwarrin home of Mr Stanley and Ms Michels and seized a number of computers and storage devices and two days later the couple went missing after telling friends they were going gold prospecting near Ballarat.

Sen-Det Ross said that examination of the computer files revealed a number of images of Ms Michels, Mr Stanley and two other adults sitting naked on a couch together with a 10-year-old girl.

As a result of police inquiries the other couple are facing charges and the child is in the care of the DHS.
Under cross examination from defence barrister James Trevallion the detective said it appeared Mr Stanley was a "controlling person'' and a witness had described him as being possessive.

But Sen-Det Ross said that in the pornographic images with the child Ms Michel appeared to enjoying herself.
"The accused is laughing and she appeared to be a willing participant,'' the detective said.

Outside court Ms Michels' solicitor, Ben Archbold said his client was happy to be allowed to return to her family in Darwin until the case continues next year.

Fugitive couple Craig Stanley and Rebecca Michels admit making child pornography
    AAP

    July 4, 2012 3:39pm

A FORMER soldier who went on the run after police found thousands of depraved child porn images at his Melbourne home, including one of a baby being sexually abused, has pleaded guilty.

Craig Stanley, 28, fled in October with his partner Rebecca Michels, 25, after a raid on their Langwarrin home in outer Melbourne led to the discovery of more than 17,000 child porn images.

Police also found 279 images that Stanley had made involving a girl the couple met through being nudists, the Melbourne Magistrates Court was told on Wednesday.

Michels has admitted making 10 images involving the same girl.

Stanley has pleaded guilty to possessing 17,381 child porn images, to making child porn images and transmitting three images.

Michels has admitted making child porn.

Defence lawyer Jim Dounias said Stanley, a former soldier, was a nudist who had crossed the line and taken indecent photos of a girl.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said there must have been an element of trust that was built up in the child before she participated in the photos.

Mr Dounias said Stanley would be a registered sexual offender for life which would limit his work opportunities.

Prosecutor Anne Hassan said the fact the identities of the children in the 17,381 images Stanley possessed were not known did not mean they were not victims.

"These are real victims, real children," she said.

Ms Hassan told the court among the 17,381 images found on electronic devices belonging to Stanley was one of a one-year-old baby being sexually abused.

Michels will be assessed for a community corrections order, the court heard.

Michels and Stanley fled to a remote bush campsite in Victoria, surviving on carp and baked beans and avoiding capture for 21 days until Michels tipped police off, a court previously heard.

They were arrested in the Dimboola area in north-western Victoria.

They are expected to be sentenced later on Wednesday.

Couple sentenced for child porn stash

REBECCA Michels was working in Darwin for the Treasury Department and had not seen her ex-boyfriend Craig Stanley for more than nine years when he started writing to her.

She agreed to rekindle their relationship and moved into his Langwarrin home on January 19 last year.

Stanley, who had been a nudist since he was 16, began taking her to nudist pool parties for adults and children at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. Children aged under 18 have since been barred from attending the fortnightly events.

The couple were soon on the run after a police raid on their home in October uncovered Stanley's large collection of child pornography.

Stanley, 28, a former soldier and private detective, pleaded guilty yesterday in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to three charges of making, possessing and transmitting child pornography.

Michels, 25, pleaded guilty to making child pornography.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the couple had exploited an innocent, vulnerable and trusting young girl by taking pornographic photographs of her.

He jailed Stanley for a minimum of 10 months and ordered he be placed on the serious sex offenders register for life. Stanley has been in custody for 229 days since his arrest.

Michels was placed on an 18-month community corrections order and will be on the sex offenders register for eight years.

Prosecutor Anne Hassan told the court police raided the couple's home on October 27 last year after a tip-off from the FBI and found more than 17,000 photographs and 531 films of child pornography.

Local child porn case leads to US rescue

    By Dan Oakes

    27 May 2013 — 3:00am

It was a story that gripped Victorians for weeks: a young couple left a note for family and friends saying they were heading to central Victoria to pan for gold, loaded their gear into a rental car and vanished.

Distraught family members made tearful pleas for public help in finding Craig Stanley and Rebecca Michels, describing their disappearance as totally out of character.

But behind the scenes, police were fairly sure they knew why the Langwarrin couple had left home in a hurry. Two weeks after their disappearance, on November 8, 2011, detectives revealed that Stanley and Michels were wanted for ''serious criminal offences''.

On November 19, Stanley was arrested at a supermarket in Dimboola and Michels was found soon after at a nearby campsite.

They were both charged with child pornography offences and Stanley was also accused of an indecent act with a child. They pleaded guilty, and on July 5, 2012, Stanley, 28, was sentenced to 10 months in prison and placed on the sex offenders' register for life. Michels received an 18-month community corrections order and was also placed on the register. To the public, it was case closed.

However, for the members of taskforce Astraea - the Victoria Police unit tackling online child abuse - the job was just beginning.

Among the thousands of child abuse images found on Stanley's computer were a number created by one person. Some showed the serious sexual abuse of a young girl, but another showed a couple holding a sign with the name of a nudist website and a user name.

With the girl in the picture clearly at serious risk, Astraea's Detective Leading Senior Constable Simon Fogarty knew he had to work fast. Using the nudist website and username as a starting point, he discovered the couple in the photo were in the US and was able to unearth some details, including email addresses.

''One of the things they did do, the American couple, was some of the images they were going to trade, they photoshopped the image and scratched out the face of the child,'' LSC Fogarty said.

''That was one of the things that raised concerns with me, because if you're not sharing a picture you're not going to bother blocking out the face. It certainly suggested they were part of a bigger network.''

On the afternoon of Friday, August 17, LSC Fogarty contacted agents from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in Philadelphia.

As Assistant Special Agent in Charge, William Walker, said last week, agents worked through the night and over the weekend to identify the people who created and sent the images, coming up with two names: Patrick Mergen and his girlfriend, Laura Shauger.

On Tuesday, August 21, they swooped on Mergen and Shauger, charging them with producing and possessing child pornography. More importantly, they rescued two children, including the girl from the photographs found on Craig Stanley's computer.

Simon Fogarty was on his way to play tennis on Wednesday morning, Australian time, when he received the email, saying Mergen and Shauger had been arrested and the children rescued.

''It was quite a big build-up of all this stuff happening, and then to get the email saying they'd just kicked the door in and rescued this young child, it was just a brilliant feeling. Probably the best day of my career. It was a very satisfying feeling,'' LSC Fogarty said.

''I was probably one of the only people in the world who knew this girl was being abused, apart from the offenders and who they're trading with. So to be on the other side of the world and have some sort of impact on her life, it was a huge thing.''

William Walker was equally effusive. ''To say that this was a cohesive partnership between Victoria Police and Homeland Security Investigations is probably an understatement,'' he said. ''We can't say enough great things about their department. This case is absolutely symbolic of how the process is supposed to work.''

Patrick Mergen pleaded guilty in April and was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Shauger pleaded guilty last week and faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison.

Also, for all the non-Australians who won't realise the significance of them being found in Dimboola :

Dimboola was used as the set of a notoriously smutty Australian movie in the 70s (which might be why a prominent Dimboola spokesperson said something like "this is the last thing we need" after finding out Craig Stanley was located while shopping in Dimboola supermarket).

Trailer here if anyone wants to put themselves through watching it

Did I read that right? The Americans received 15 and 25 years and the Australians got a few months for the dude and no time for the gal? But why tho?

I wonder if we will hear of more arrests since this appears to be part of a bigger network.
