Rebecca Michels (25) and Craig Stanley (28) missing since 26 or 27 October 2011

THE family of an NT woman missing for more than a week held photographs of their loved one as they made a public plea for help.

Rebecca Michels, of Wagaman, and her fiance Craig Stanley, 28, have been missing since October 26.

Her sister, Cathryn McAdie, said it was "heartbreaking" not knowing if she was OK.

"We just want to know that you're safe," she said.

Ms McAdie said her 25-year-old sister left the NT at the start of the year to be closer to her best friend in Melbourne. It was there that she met Mr Stanley.
Their cars are still at their home in Frankston.

"The family and friends of Rebecca have started a facebook page to help find this couple. You can find the page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/281398661900875/It's called "Help find Rebecca Michels!!!""

Victoria Police's Chris Sweet said they rented a 4WD and left for Bendigo to pan for gold. But instead they went to Ballarat, where Mr Stanley organised for the car to be returned.

Mr Sweet said clothing, personal items and camping equipment were found in the car. Police believe the couple have met with foul play.

Ms McAdie said Ms Michels knew the rules when camping in places without phone reception.

"She would always tell me when she was going to be out of phone reception," she said.

Ms McAdie said her phone had since been switched off. Her father, Ross McAdie, said Rebecca, who grew up in the "mobile phone age", was now without her phone.

"It's totally out of character," he said.

Ms McAdie said her sister sent a text message to her boss on October 27 saying she wasn't coming into work.

This whole thing is so strange.

    http://www.thecourier.com.au/news/lo...r/2348485.aspx

THE family of a missing Frankston couple last seen in Ballarat say they are overwhelmed by the compassion shown by the Ballarat community.

Rebecca Michels and her fiance Craig Stanley left their home near Frankston on October 27, leaving a note telling housemates they were off to Bendigo to pan for gold.

The couple then hired a car, despite having several vehicles of their own, and left Melbourne.

Ms Michels was last seen on October 28 in Ballarat negotiating for the Nissan X-Trail hired by her and Mr Stanley to be returned. When Mr Stanley returned on October 31 to drop off the car, Ms Michels was not with him. It is the last confirmed sighting of either missing person.

The car was returned to Frankston on November 2 with clothing and camping gear inside.

Ms Michels had sent strange text messages to her work, saying she would not be in the day she disappeared because police were investigating her missing housemate. No housemate was missing.

Ms Michel’s sister Cathryn McAdie told The Courier yesterday family members were not making plans to come to the area to start their own search.

“We haven’t got any plans like that at this stage,” she said.

“Only because they said they were going to Bendigo and then ended up in Ballarat, so where do we start?”

Ms McAdie said she wasn’t exactly sure what the police investigation into her sister’s disappearance involved, but said she was overwhelmed with the support of locals in the Ballarat region.

“It’s just crazy – I can’t believe how much support we’ve got,” she said.

“There are plenty of people up there (in Ballarat) putting up posters in shop windows and faxing around flyers to businesses.

“Just complete strangers giving up their time – it’s amazing.”

Police and family members say it is possible the couple eloped, but say there is no reason to suspect foul play.

Frankston Police Detective Senior Constable Chris Sweet called on anyone with information to come forward.

Ballarat Police Sergeant Paul Kinna said local members had followed up a couple of potential sightings of the pair, which turned out to be false alarms.
He said there were no immediate plans to launch a large-scale search of the area.

Ms Michels is described as 160cm tall, thin, with shoulder-length brown hair and a fair complexion. Mr Stanley is described as about 172cm tall, of medium build, with short black hair and a beard.
Anyone with any information on the disappearance can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

I suspect foul play. He killed her and is now in hiding.

When the person returned the rental car, a lot of their belongings were in it including an apparently expensive metal detector which was his pride and joy.

"We believe the car carrier sighted them both on the Friday. It's strange, the car's been returned to Budget in Frankston with a fair amount of their belongings in it including clothing and a metal detector," he said.

It says Mr. Stanley returned the car. Are they sure it was him who returned it?

When Mr Stanley returned on October 31 to drop off the car, Ms Michels was not with him.

And if it was him. He could have accidentally left the metal detector behind if he had murder on his mind.

If he killed her and was just wanting to get away that metal detector was probably the last thing on his mind. Did the guy drop off the car then walk away? Nobody was there to pick him up? He couldn't very well take a bunch of stuff with him if he was on foot.

But why create suspicion by leaving stuff in the car? Surely even if he did kill her and was preoccupied, he would have had the ounce of common sense it takes to think that maybe leaving a whole bunch of personal stuff in a rental car might make people ask questions.

Okay this is a bit more info. They/he didn't actually return the car. A freight driver picked it up and dropped it back so it must have been a fair distance away as this is usually done to keep mileage down on the vehicle.

Detective Senior Constable Chris Sweet, of Frankston Police, said the pair left Ms Michel’s home in a taxi and hired a car from Budget rentals in Frankston.

Mr Stanley had organised for the car to be returned on a car carrier to the Frankston Budget store, and the freight driver retrieved the car from a man and a woman matching their descriptions one week ago.

‘‘The car’s been returned to Budget at Frankston with a fair amount of their belongings in it, including clothing and a metal detector,’’ Senior Constable Sweet said.

The fact that she will never be seen again might make people ask questions, too.

A lot of killers do dumb stuff. It's a good thing they do, or none of them would be caught.

So do you think it wasn't him who brought the car back? Why aren't they clarifying that?

I don't know if anyone actually knows what's going on. The article I posted above said that people matching both their descriptions dropped the car to the freight driver. So if that's the case, has something happened to them both since then? It's been stinking hot here the last few days so if they did 'go bush' to look for gold and don't have any supplies, they are in trouble.

Or was it really just him dropping off the car? If so, then yes I think that he probably killed her.

Those two articles have completely different information. How are we supposed to solve cases with such crappy media coverage?

Mr Stanley, 28, is a former defence force recruit and had arranged for the rented gold Nissan X-Trail to be taken back to Frankston by a car transport firm in Ross Creek.
Before leaving Melbourne, the couple left a note asking a friend to collect some clothing, camping gear and a metal detector from the car when it was returned days later.

'Outside forces' fear in search for missing Frankston couple

The father of a Frankston woman missing with her partner is concerned that the couple could have been under pressure to disappear.

Ross McAdie is also worried that "outside forces" could be involved in the disappearance of Rebecca Michels and her partner Craig Stanley.

The couple, believed to have gone to Ballarat to pan for gold, have not been seen since Thursday, October 27.

Speaking from Darwin, Mr McAdie said he did not believe speculation that the couple might have eloped.

"Whether or not duress is involved from outside we do not know," he told The Age.

"We really do not know what motivates somebody to up stakes and go, I just do not know, our only interest is to get them back safely," he said.

A Facebook page aiming to gather information regarding the disappearance of the pair now has more than 2500 members, with messages of support being posted regularly.

Ms Michels is 160 centimetres tall with a thin build, shoulder length brown hair and a fair complexion.

Mr Stanley is about 172 centimetres tall with a medium build, short black hair with a moustache and beard.

Victoria Police asked anyone with information about the missing couple to contact Crime Stoppers directly on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.

Rebecca's sister Cathryn is posting on the FB and said this about the sighting of them dropping off the car -

The truck driver sighted Craig speaking to a woman. However he did not see her when he returned the car. This is why you hear from one report that she was there, and another that she wasn't.

    Another twist...

    Missing Frankston couple declared fugitives

Victoria Police have issued warrants for the arrest of the engaged Melbourne couple who went missing late last month.

Rebecca Michels, 25, and her fianc? Craig Stanley, 28, from Frankston, were last seen on October 26.

Police are holding a press conference at 4.30pm (AEST) but are yet to say what crimes the couple are wanted for.

They had earlier held fears for the couple's safety but are now saying that their investigation has changed tack.

It was thought the couple had travelled to Ballarat in a hire car to mine for gold.

Their relatives are appealing for information through a special Facebook page which has drawn 3000 members.

The Herald Sun reports that police have seized illicit material, including videos, from a property in which one or both of them reside.

Detectives said at least one of the pair had become aware of the police investigation when they hired a Nissan X Trail on October 26 and drove from Frankston to Ballarat, leaving a note they were going gold prospecting.

A FRANKSTON couple listed as missing have been on the run since police seized computers and other material after raiding a Langwarrin property last month.
Police yesterday revealed they had issued arrest warrants for ''serious criminal offences'' against Rebecca Michels and Craig Stanley, who were reported missing on October 27.
''We know they do have a sum of cash with them. We cannot confirm that their accounts have been accessed at this stage, but we believe not,'' Inspector Shayne Pannell said.

I need to know what they've done. If I see them should I try to apprehend them, or are they dangerous? I must know these things.

THE baffling case of a missing Melbourne couple has taken a new twist with police claiming they are on the run.

Craig Stanley and Rebecca Michels, who are engaged, have not been seen since October 26 when they left home in Frankston, saying they were going prospecting for gold, the Herald Sun reported.

Friends and family were left dumbfounded by their disappearance, but investigators confirmed they are wanted for questioning over "serious criminal offences".

The Herald Sun has learnt images and video seized from a property linked one or both of the pair to serious offences.

Det-Insp Shayne Pannell said it was an unusual case.

"At this stage we do say they are on the run, yes," Insp Pannell said.

"At this stage the best I can say is 'serious criminal offences' but I can't say any more.

"Warrants have been issued. They need the opportunity to be interviewed and put their defence or their answers to questions for us to make a final determination."

Insp Pannell said the family was "disappointed" at the news the pair were wanted for questioning about a criminal matter.

"Like us they are still very concerned for their welfare as to the circumstances they disappeared," he said.

Insp Pannell said police did not reveal the criminal investigation earlier because they did not have all the facts and feared for the couple's welfare.

Ms Michels' father Ross said he was dumbfounded by the latest development.

"We're totally stumped. Absolutely, we did not see this coming," he said.

"Her family love her. Her family need to see her. Her family will stand by her. Her family will stand by her partner. But her family want her to come home, hand herself in."

Mr Michels said one of Rebecca's sisters, who is pregnant, had suffered gestational diabetes because of the strain.

"There's only one person that can fix it and that's Rebecca. You need to contact us. You need to relieve that stress from Jennifer," he said.

Rebecca's other sister Cathryn last night wrote on Facebook: "To all of you selfless people, please know that we love and support Rebecca, and in turn Craig, we call on them to come forward.

"Rebecca if you see this, please know, we love you ... And will stand by you always."

Mr Stanley, 28, and Ms Michels, 25, set off two weeks ago in a hired Nissan X-Trail, leaving a note saying they were heading for Bendigo.

They travelled instead to Ballarat then had the rental car, containing Mr Stanley's expensive metal detector, transported by truck back to its operators in Frankston.
