Catherine Tornnquist (56) was allegedly murdered by her son

A friend of the Hot Springs woman who disappeared this month said she was planning to go to Rapid City the day she vanished to pick up a motor home she was planning to buy.

Don Lytle of Hot Springs said he last saw 56-year-old Catherine Tornquist on Oct. 4 after they spent the day together sightseeing and visiting secondhand stores.

"On Wednesday morning, she was to go with her son (Matthew) to pick up a motor home in Rapid City at Midstates Camper," said Lytle, adding that her plans were to begin traveling south in the camper.

Tornquist was last seen between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Oct. 5 in Hot Springs, according to the Fall River Sheriff's Office, which is investigating her disappearance.

Lytle said he last saw Tornquist when he waved goodbye to her at about 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the Sonny's Super Foods parking lot in Hot Springs. Lytle said the two often traveled out of town together. He said he reported her missing at 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 7 after her son called and said he didn't know where she was.

Lytle said he had called her numerous times on Oct. 5 to see how it was going with the camper, but she did not answer or return calls. On Oct. 6, he said he decided to go to her home in Hot Brook Canyon to see the new camper. Lytle said her car was there, but the camper - a 34-foot motor home - was not. He said he then went to Rapid City and spoke to someone at Midstates Camper who reported that Catherine Tornquist never showed up for her 1:30 p.m. appointment despite previously putting $1,000 down on the vehicle.

"Her family does have a history of anuerisms, so I thought something must have happened to her," Lytle said. "So I flew back to Hot Springs and got into her home but she wasn't there."

Lytle said Tornquist's disappearance has been hard on him as he has either seen or spoken to her on the phone every day for the past several years.

"Catherine is a very kind and caring person," said Lytle, adding that he was looking forward to celebrating her 56th birthday with her on Oct. 12.

"She's a very spiritual person who wouldn't even swat a fly. She would often capture bugs in her home and then go outside and release them," he said.

In addition to her son, Matthew of Hot Springs, Lytle said he has been in contact with Tornquist's daughter, Tina, who lives in Colorado.

Fall River County Sheriff Rich Mraz said his department continues to look for the missing woman.

"We have done many searches," he said late last week. "We have been following all leads that have come in so far."

Mraz declined to say if foul play is suspected.

Mraz said that he cannot release any information on the ongoing investigation, which includes his office, as well as the Division of Criminal Investigation, along with the Custer and Shannon county sheriff's offices. Anyone with information can contact the Fall River County Sheriff's Office at 745-4444.

"It's the salt water that changes the Rainbow's pretty colors to gray." "And his colors never come back?" "No, once he's been to the sea he's changed forever. The Steelhead can come back home here, stay for the rest of his days, and live among the other Rainbow trout, but he'll always be different because of where he's been." Morsi, Pamela. Garters.

With investigators in the case not sharing any new information with her, the daughter of missing Hot Springs resident Catherine Tornquist said she is frustrated with local law enforcement and investigators. "They won't tell me anything, and it's really frustrating," Tina Post of Loveland, Colo., said in an interview Friday in Hot Springs. "They just keep telling me that they are doing searches and following leads, but it's really odd to me why they won't tell me more."

Tornquist, 56, was last seen early in the morning of Oct. 5 in Hot Springs.

A friend, Don Lytle, made the 911 call to report her missing on Oct. 7 about 2:45 a.m., he said, after Tornquist's son Matthew contacted him and said he could not find her.

Lytle said last month that he had spent most of Oct. 4 with Tornquist touring the Black Hills and said she had planned to go to Rapid City with her son the next day to buy a motor home and bring it back to Hot Springs.

According to Lytle, she never made her scheduled appointment in Rapid City.

Post also said that she was aware her mother was planning to go to Rapid City but contends that Lytle was the one who was supposed to go to Rapid City with her, not her brother Matthew.

"Matthew was in the house," Post said. "She woke him up early that morning and said ‘I'm leaving,' and then Matthew went back to sleep." Post said that the reason her brother didn't report his mother missing was because he thought she was with Lytle.

Post does not believe her mother would have simply disappeared on her own, particularly because Tornquist's elderly father is a resident of Hot Springs' Castle Manor Nursing Home.

"Grandpa is in Castle Manor; she would never just leave him," Post said. "She was very dependable, methodical. She would never just say ‘I need a break' and disappear for awhile. It's not in her DNA."

Post said she last spoke to her mother on the phone Oct. 1. She first learned of her mother's disappearance when Fall River County law enforcement contacted her the day she was reported missing -- Friday, Oct. 7 -- which prompted her to immediately drive to South Dakota and aid in the search.

She said she has since traveled back and forth from Loveland to Hot Springs two other times since her mother's disappearance but has found it difficult to keep up with the search for her mom because she doesn't live here and because local law enforcement hasn't told her much about what they have found.

"They have kept in good communication with me and keep reassuring me, but they won't share any of their results," Post said.

When asked for comment Nov. 11, Fall River County Sherriff Rich Mraz said his department cannot release any information in an ongoing investigation.

He said nine law enforcement agents conducted an organized search Friday north of Hot Springs in an area previously not searched.

A candlelight vigil was held Friday night in Hot Springs; 15 local residents gathered in Centennial Park and prayed for Tornquist's safe return.

A tearful Post thanked those attending the vigil and asked all community members to step up and help in the search for her missing mother.

"Remember to always help the ones you love, no matter what the situation," she said.

A Fall River County Grand Jury handed down a three-count indictment on July 12, including first-degree murder, against Matthew Charles Tornquist, 26, in connection with the disappearance of his mother, Catherine Tornquist, last October.

The grand jury heard testimony from 14 witnesses before returning the indictment. Matthew Tornquist was indicted on first-degree murder, with an alternative count of second-degree murder, as well as a single count of grand theft.

Matt Brown, the deputy states’ attorney for Custer County was appointed to handle the case as a Special Assistant Attorney General, by South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, who also attended the grand jury proceedings.

Brown confirmed that Matthew Tornquist is the son of Catherine Tornquist. Matthew Tornquist has been in federal custody in Rapid City on non-related charges since earlier this spring.

“I don’t know if Mr. Tornquist has been served with this arrest warrant as of yet,” Brown said via phone interview Friday morning. “There were some questions, with his being in federal custody, over how the process will work from a procedure standpoint.”

No further court date has been set at this time.

The indictment charges that on or about Oct. 4, 2011, Matthew Tornquist committed first-degree murder, or premeditated murder, of Catherine Tornquist. Catherine Tornquist was reported missing the first week in October last year. Despite several concerted efforts, her presumed remains have not been found as of yet.

First-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence, or possibly the death penalty, in addition to a $50,000 fine.

The alternative count of second-degree carries a mandatory life sentence and a $50,000 fine.

The grand theft charge stems from the disappearance of a large amount of cash that Catherine Tornquist was believed to have in her possession at the time of her disappearance. Earlier reports stated that she had intended to purchase a camper in Rapid City with the money, but failed to arrive and has never been seen since.

A Hot Springs man accused of first degree murder, second degree murder and grand theft in connection with the disappearance of his mother pleaded not guilty to all three counts Thursday.

Matthew Charles Tornquist, 26, of Hot Springs will make his next court appearance in Fall River County in mid-August.
