Patients of a Monongalia County doctor are in shock after learning of her death.
Dr. Rita Payne, 60, a gynecologist with Partners in Women's Health Care in Morgantown, plunged 27 stories to her death Friday from a condominium complex in Austin, Texas.
According to investigators, Payne was a guest at the Four Season Hotel. She was touring a condo she showed interest in purchasing when she asked the hotel representative for a few moments alone to look around. That's when police say Payne jumped off the balcony.
Donna Commodore, a patient of Payne's for more than 20 years, says you couldn't have asked for a more caring or attentive physician.
"She was an excellent doctor. She was a patient's doctor. She listened, which I think is the biggest thing for a doctor,? Commodore said. ?She was just enthusiastic. She was a fantastic woman."
Commodore says Payne was more than just her doctor.
"You got to know her really well from the short visits. When you went to your visit every year, you felt like you were going to see your friend,? she said.
A funeral service is set for Saturday at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Morgantown at 1pm.
