Lauren Spierer- Missing since June 3, 2011

Lauren Spierer, 20, just finished her sophomore year at Indiana University. She went missing in Bloomington around 4:30 am on June 3rd after a night out with friends. The police are currently searching, but so far have no leads.

She was last seen wearing a white tank top, with a loose, button up shirt and black pants. She wasn't wearing shoes, and left her cell phone behind at the bar she had been at with friends.

    According to http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=81821:
Spierer is a white female, 4 feet 11 inches tall, slender build, has blue eyes and long blonde hair.

Spierer was last seen walking south on College Avenue from 11th Street on her way back to her apartment in Smallwood Plaza, located on College Avenue.

She did not arrive to her apartment and video footage does not show her entering the apartment complex.

According to her mother, Spierer has a life-threatening heart condition called Long QT Syndrome. Spierer's mother has asked that if anyone knows where her daughter is, to please take her to the hospital.

Police officers have searched the area several times, including a search with a police K-9 unit. They have also spoken with businesses, construction crews and residents in the area.

Flyers have been distributed all across the IU campus as well as Bloomington. Anyone with information about Lauren Spierer should call BPD at 812-339-4477.

The Bloomington Police Department has released new details in the case of missing IU student Lauren Spierer.

At a press conference this morning, BPD Lt. of Detectives Bill Parker said Lauren was hanging out with friends Thursday night, June 2. They were drinking at Kilroy’s Sports, a bar on the intersection of Eighth and Walnut streets, according to friends’ testimonies and Kilroy’s cameras.

Lauren left Sports with a friend at 2:30 or 2:40 a.m. She left behind her cell phone and shoes, Parker said. The items are in police custody. Lauren likely left her shoes because there is a fenced-in beach and sand area at the bar.

The two walked to Lauren’s apartment complex, Smallwood Plaza, but video cameras show she did not enter her apartment. The friends stayed inside the complex for a short time and then headed north to another friend’s apartment.

The two met up with friends at an apartment complex on the corner of 11th and Morton streets. Police found a small purse and keys that belong to Lauren along this route. Parker said he thinks Lauren left the items on the way to the apartment complex.

The two went into one apartment, then to another apartment a few doors down to hang out with some friends.

Around 4:30 a.m. Lauren told her friends she felt like heading home to Smallwood. A male friend watched Lauren leave the apartment. He saw her last on the corner of 11th Street and College Avenue, he told police. That male friend was the last person to see Lauren, Parker said.

Police are interviewing everyone Lauren was known to hang out with that night. Parker said police are focusing on about 10 people of interest, but they have no official suspects.

Parker said police are focusing on the areas Lauren visited early Friday morning. They are using K-9 units to search between the two apartment complexes. They have no leads to other counties, he said.

So sad...I know back in the day when me and my friends would party a lot, and I mean A LOT, we would never be out that late alone...if I left a party to go home by myself, my friends always walked me to my car, and made sure I called when I got home safe, and vice versa. I wish her friends would've done the same for her, and maybe she wouldn't be missing right now...

I live two hours south of IU, and my brother just graduated there last month. I visited him the weekend he graduated, we walked from his friend's house where we were going to stay the night to the bars, went to 2-3 (we actually were going to go to Kilroy's, but decided not to), then walked back home together. I don't party and RARELY drink, so it was interesting to be in that sort of party college environment. Most everywhere I looked, students were walking in groups or at least in pairs, even when they were trashed - they just knew to stay together. I just checked the Twitter page, and it looks like cops are searching her apartment complex and even broke down some doors. :(

Police use battering ram to enter apartment complex and collect evidence: http://www.southbendtribune.com/hto-...,3351299.story
Police collected more evidence from the Smallwood Plaza lobby Tuesday night, hoping for more clues to 20-year-old Lauren Spierer’s disappearance.

They used a battering ram to knock down two doors and seize several computer hard drives from the security room and mail room of the apartment building after obtaining a search warrant earlier Tuesday. Video surveillance stored on the computers might give police an idea of who entered and left the Smallwood apartment building on College Avenue, where Spierer lives, the night she went missing. It is unclear why officers used force to enter the security room or why a key wasn’t available.

Police still believe Spierer never returned to her apartment early Friday morning after a night out with friends.

Parents of the missing IU student updated the community on the hunt for her late Tuesday morning, saying the search parties will continue.

Bloomington police Lt. Bill Parker said at a press briefing that police suspect foul play and have pieced together much of Spierer’s actions the evening before she was reported missing, using reports of friends and surveillance video to confirm she was at Kilroy’s Sports Bar on North Walnut Street.

From there, at about 2:30 a.m., Spierer and a male friend went to the Smallwood apartment complex on North College Avenue, where she lives.

She and the friend then walked north a few blocks to another apartment complex at 11th and Morton streets, where the friend lives.

Spierer later visited another friend in that same building and, at about 4:30 a.m., decided she would go back to her apartment. The friend watched her walk to the corner of 11th and College and, Parker said, “she’s never been seen since.”

Parker said Spierer, an Indiana University student, left her cellphone and her shoes at the bar, which has a sandy area on the patio. Police also found keys and a small purse identified as hers along the Morton Street route she generally used to get from her apartment to the friend’s apartment, but Parker said police believe those items were left there on the way to the friend’s apartment.
National Center for Missing and Exploited Children joins search:http://www.southbendtribune.com/hto-...0,149508.story
Bloomington police will now be getting additional investigative resources from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in their continued search for 20-year-old Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, who has been missing since early Friday morning.

"Every place in the city has been covered by officers," Bloomington police Lt. Bill Parker said in a Wednesday press briefing. Volunteers have extended their search beyond the city limits.

    Volunteer searches will continue each day at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

"We want to extend it beyond city limits," Parker said of continued searches.
It sounds like everyone is doing everything possible to find Lauren. This is so baffling. I know that my friends would never let me walk home alone, but when everyone is drinking, sometimes it gets hard to keep track of everyone, especially when you're so young and inexperienced. I've gotten rides from concerned cops a couple of times when I've had to walk home alone

Police seek DNA from Corey Rossman, the last person Lauren was seen with:

    http://www.lohud.com/article/2011061...xt%7CFrontpage

Apparently he was on a "no trespass" list at her apartment building due to prior altercations at the location. Rossman's lawyer says his client has been compliant with police requests.

Not sure why they're asking for DNA. What do they have to compare it to? Did they find something?

is this the douche who claims to have gotten into a fight causing temporary amnesia that night? He said that being punched has made him forget everything that night, and others have said he's the last one seen with Lauren.

Cops: LI boyfriend a person of interest in missing student case
(06/10/11) WOODBURY - As the search for missing college student Lauren Spierer continues in Indiana, police say that her Long Island boyfriend is now considered a person of interest in the case.
News 12 Long Island has learned the boyfriend's name is Jesse Wolff, of Port Washington.
Spierer, 20, was last seen a week ago while walking back to her apartment alone. Police aren't saying if Wolff was with her that night, only that they're speaking to him and he's cooperative.
Dive teams have been exploring a lake near Spierer's campus, and police have set up checkpoints asking motorists if they've seen her. Hundreds of people have also volunteered to help in the search.

Specialised search team Texan EquuSearch to join the search for Lauren:

    http://www.fox59.com/news/wxin-speci...,4153146.story

A lot of manpower and resources have been going towards the search for Lauren Spierer, and now a specialized search team is in Bloomington.

Private search group Texas EquuSearch came at the request of Spierers' parents and authorities involved in the case.

"I think there is a lot of strength in numbers, and there has been a lot of numbers," said Texas EquuSearch founder and director Tim Miller.

The search and rescue group will be bringing some of the most advanced technology available to Bloomington beginning Sunday.

"We got an awful lot of experience. We got our own sonar equipment. We got our own drop down cameras, ground penetration units, and drone airplanes," said Miller.

Miller told FOX 59 the group that is dedicated to his daughter is more than a thousand volunteers strong. In 1984, Laura Miller was abducted and murdered in north Galveston County, Texas.

"His compassion is a real compassion. Unfortunately, it was derived from an unfortunate circumstance," said Robert Spierer, Lauren's father. "I think to have the breath of those kinds of resources with the level of sophistication and the skilled search people is extremely important."

The group's expertise includes some high profile missing persons cases, including Stacey Petersen, Natalee Holloway and Caylee Anthony.

"We have a pretty good record, but never brag on our record because we're only as good as our next search, and Lauren is our next search," said Miller.

The group's technology will begin arriving Sunday.

Experienced horseback riders in the surrounding area that are already connected with the group are expected to lend a hand in the search effort.

Possible Drug Overdose Probed in Missing-Student Case
(06/13/11) WOODBURY – Police say they are investigating reports that a missing college student from Edgemont, N.Y. may have overdosed on cocaine and that her friends dumped her body after panicking.
Indiana University student Lauren Spierer vanished on June 3.
Indiana police also say they have video of an alley the night she disappeared, but they will not say what it shows.
Police call her boyfriend, Jesse Wolff, of Port Washington, one of 10 persons of interest. They also say none of the 10 people are suspects.
Spierer's family is offering a reward for information on the whereabouts of their daughter.

A missing university student is "a beautiful young lady", her father says.

Lauren Spierer has not been seen since June 3 after she had a night out partying with friends.

Hundreds have joined the search for the 20-year-old and US police have now released previously unseen security camera images in a bid to get to the bottom of the mystery.

The images show her just before she left for her night out and show a pick-up truck spotted near where the Indiana University student was last seen.

Bloomington police Captain Joe Qualters said investigators want to talk with anyone who was in the truck, although they don't know whether it is connected to Ms Spierer's disappearance.

The truck - a white four-door Chevrolet Silverado or Colorado built in the mid-2000s - drove around a city block in the area at about 4.30am on June 3, around the time Ms Spierer, of Greenburgh, New York, was walking towards her apartment after her night out.

"It could either be significant to us in that that person may have some direct responsibility for the event or that individual has information that could lead us in a direction," Captain Qualters said.

He said the truck, which ran a stop sign, didn't slow down enough for investigators to be able to make out writing seen on one of its back doors and rear panels.

In the photos, the truck appears to have some equipment in the back and detectives are continuing to check on construction areas in the neighbourhood, Captain Qualters said.
Police have used security video to track Ms Spierer's arrival and departure from her apartment building that night, but Wednesday was the first time any of the images were released to the public.

In the picture given out by police, Ms Spierer is dressed in a white shirt and black leggings as she leaves her apartment building. Captain Qualters said it was being released to help the public know what Ms Spierer was wearing when she disappeared.

During Wednesday's news conference, Ms Spierer's father, Robert Spierer, said the photo was fuzzy but a good depiction of her.

"She's a happy, smiling, beautiful young lady on her way out for the evening to meet with friends," he said. "That's the Lauren that we're looking for."

The truck in the photos didn't ring any bells with volunteers who spent a rainy morning searching downtown Bloomington for signs of Ms Spierer.

"I hope somebody knows that truck," said Leah Aft, assistant director of IU's Helene G. Simon Hillel Centre who supervises the downtown storefront out of which volunteer searchers are based.

Aft said about 20 people volunteered to search on Wednesday morning, compared with about 200 a day since Spierer disappeared. But the rain didn't discourage those who did turn out.

"You have to stay focused on what the need is," said 48-year-old Jeff Ritter, of Martinsville.

Mr Ritter said the rain paled in importance to the anguish felt by Spierer's family and friends.

"The weather is trivial," he said.

Wow, I hadn't heard about the cocaine overdose theory yet. I've been following the Twitter and even considered driving up there to help in the search. This is SO sad. If the drug overdose theory is correct, how could her friends live with that kind of guilt? :(

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Family and friends of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer gathered with members of the Bloomington community for a prayer vigil on Thursday.
The mystery behind Spierer's disappearance headed into its fourth week as police and her parents asked friends and fellow students where she is.
Bob Whitaker, pastor of Evangelical Community Church in Bloomington, offered words of encouragement.

"You wish for a better place ... a place that has more justice, peace and students can live in all kinds of atmospheres without having any circumstances of violence. I think that's the thing that triggers our hearts towards this situation," Whitaker said. "What is your prayer? My prayer is that people wouldn't give up hope. I still think she's out there and we need to find her."
Now that the volunteer searches have ended, investigators are following leads, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.
They returned to Spierer's apartment building Wednesday near the place where she was last seen.
Friends Corey Rossman, Mike Beth and Jay Rosenbaum also lived there at the time of Spierer's disappearance.
Police wouldn't say why they went back to the building or what they were looking for.

Marilyn Berhman's daughter Jill went missing in 2000. Berhman said she understood why police weren't speaking because she worked with the same detectives who tried to find her daughter.
"There hasn't been a lot of specific information released, but that's actually a good thing," Berhman said. "That means the investigators have information that they can tie to certain people."
Police said Spierer's friends Rossman, Beth and Rosenbaum have left Bloomington for the summer, but they have preregistered for classes at IU in the fall.
Spierer weighs about 90 pounds and is 4 feet 11 inches tall. Police asked anyone with information to call 812-339-4477.

Near-silence from police since IU student Lauren Spierer's disappearance has helped fuel rumors and speculation

    12:29 AM, Jul. 2, 2011 |
    22 Comments

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The four-week search for missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer has employed riders on horseback, search dogs, divers, helicopters and an army of more than 1,000 civilian volunteers.
But after nearly a month, it has failed to answer an essential question: What happened?
The Bloomington Police Department has offered a scant timeline of Spierer's movements in the early morning hours of June 3. During more than a dozen news conferences, police officials have taken few questions.
Nearly a month after a friend reported last seeing Spierer rounding a corner at 11th Street and College Avenue, police haven't said whether they think Spierer is alive or dead. They haven't acknowledged whether they have suspects in a crime. Or if they are close to an arrest.
Into the vacuum of information, a sizable pack of journalists from Indiana and New York, the Spierers' home state, have strode in, trying through interviews with Spierer's friends and their attorneys to put some paint on a blank canvas.
Meanwhile, a cottage industry of Internet sages and bloggers has arisen to push pet theories, accuse key figures and generally speculate about what's happening.
And repeated statements by the Spierer family have helped fuel the speculation.
Friday's news conference was a good example. Police announced they didn't have anything to say but that Robert and Charlene Spierer, the missing girl's parents, had asked to address the media.
Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters introduced the Spierers and stepped aside. The stricken parents spoke for 12 minutes, trying again to appeal to the consciences of people -- this time they called them "the children" -- who may have "first- or second-hand knowledge" of what happened to their daughter.
But a big question that lingers is: To whom are they speaking?
In the past they've addressed such pleas to Lauren's "friends." But the Spierers haven't named anyone. Nor have the police.
Jay Rosenbaum, the man who, according to a friend of Spierer's, was among the last to see her, has been singled out in the blogosphere for not helping police. There's even a website, jay rosenbaumneedstotalk.wordpress .com. His attorney, former Mike Tyson counsel Jim Voyles, issued a statement this week saying his client has cooperated with police and submitted results from a lie detector test, though he wouldn't discuss the nature of the questions or who asked them.
After the Spierers' brief statement Friday, the three of them -- the parents and the policeman -- disappeared behind a locked door without taking a question.
What the public can take from all this is unclear. Kenna Quinet, an associate professor of criminology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, said it is easy to stand back and criticize police during investigations, only to learn later that "we find that some information circulating about the police investigation was erroneous and the police knew more than they were telling us."
But she and another expert on police procedure questioned several aspects of the investigation.
The whole public face of the investigation has been baffling to Jim White, a retired Indiana State Police investigator and criminal justice lecturer at IUPUI.
"There are more unknowns than knowns," White said, "and part of that is because law enforcement hasn't been forthcoming. Most of the police officers I still associate with think there's a lot more to this story than what we are getting through the media."
White is critical of aspects of the dearth of information made public, the use of volunteer searchers who have been "traipsing" through potential crime scene areas, the wait before involving the State Police -- nine days after the disappearance -- and the prominent role Spierer's parents have played in the investigation.
"I think we all feel sorry for the family, but this is a police matter," White said. "The family had people searching all over town, and in fact what they did was contaminate a crime scene."
On Friday, Charlene Spierer, in thanking the police for their work, said: "I just want to say that we are part of an investigative team."
But it was a team that moved slowly into certain areas. People who live in the neighborhood where Spierer was last seen said police didn't come asking what they might have seen until 12 days after the 20-year-old disappeared. A salon worker who noticed keys and a purse near the spot where Spierer was seen on surveillance cameras June 3 has never had a face-to-face interview with police, or the chance to show them the location.
"Generally speaking, in missing-person cases, a canvass of the neighborhood should occur quickly, usually within two hours of when the person was reported missing," said Quinet, author of a homicide textbook, "The Will to Kill: Making Sense of Senseless Murder."
As for using volunteers, Quinet said such searches are best done when the volunteers are people who have passed criminal background checks, have received some training and have been certified by the department.
As the case enters its fifth week, the policy of silence continues.
Two recent searches would have gone unnoticed and unmentioned except for the fact a Bloomington Herald-Times photographer happened upon the scene and took a picture of the search dogs.
On Wednesday, police searched Rosenbaum's Bloomington apartment, according to the Herald-Times.
They also searched the Bloomington residence of Jesse Wolff, Spierer's boyfriend, the paper reported Wednesday.
    What were they looking for?
The police aren't talking. Wolff's attorney, Joe Lozano, did not return calls. And Voyles had no comment Friday.
"Yes, we all want to know the details," Quinet advised, "but I understand the police investigating need to keep things quiet."

Body Recovered From Indiana Creek, Unclear If It Is That of Lauren Spierer
    Published July 04, 2011

A body has been found on the north side of Indianapolis, and the discovery is being watched by investigators involved in the search for a missing Indiana college student.

Lauren Spierer, a 20-year-old Indiana University student from Greenburgh, N.Y., disappeared June 3 after partying into the morning hours with friends in Bloomington, Ind. She had just completed her sophomore year at the school, where she was studying fashion merchandising.

Bloomington police reported Monday that a decomposed body had been recovered from Fall Creek on the northeast side of Indianapolis by authorities there.

"Bloomington Police investigators are in contact with (Indianapolis police), but at this time there is not enough information ... to determine the identity or a basic description. A forensic examination is expected to provide more information," Bloomington police said in a news release.

The body found floating in an Indianapolis creek Sunday is not that of 20-year-old Lauren Spierer, the Indiana University student who went missing in Bloomington more than a month ago, coroner's office officials said Tuesday.

The coroner's office said that although they are not yet able to identify the decomposed body, they do know it's a young black woman, reports CBS affiliate WISH.

You want to say "phew!" but at the same time I think we know that girl is not coming back and her family just needs closure.

Yeah. And someone else's child won't be home again either.

It's NOT Lauren: Fresh hope for parents of missing student as police reveal body found floating in creek is not their daughter

A female body found by police floating in a creek in Indianapolis is not missing student Lauren Spierer, it emerged today.

There had been fears the search for the 20-year-old was nearing an end when the body was pulled from Fall Creek in North East Indianapolis, just a few miles from where Lauren went to school.

But dental records this morning confirmed the corpse was not that of the missing Indiana University college student.

The female body was found on Sunday by witnesses floating on Fall Creek, while lodged between debris.

At about 6.50pm passers-by called 911 to report the floating body, raising the possibility that it could have been that of missing Lauren.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead before the case was taken over by homicide detectives.

Lauren, a fashion merchandising major at Indiana University, vanished on June 3 after a night out with friends.

She was last seen walking home barefoot with Jason Rosenbaum, one of five friends who last saw her, after spending the night at a sportsbar and a party.

Just last week, Lauren's mother and father begged her friends' parents for help in finding their 20-year-old daughter in the run up to the holiday weekend.

Rob Spierer broke down in tears as he urged them to help Lauren's friends 'find their moral compass' and come forward if they had any information.

The couple gave an emotional press conference in Bloomington, Indiana, where Lauren disappeared more than four weeks ago after a night out with friends.

The plea came just days after it emerged the last five people to see Lauren before she disappeared on June 3 - including her boyfriend - have all hired lawyers and are ignoring Mr and Mrs Spierer's pleas for them to come forward.

The Spierers requested the conference ahead of July 4th weekend, hoping parents could use the time to speak to their children.

With his voice cracking, Mr Spierer said: 'July 4th is a time for families and friends to get together, and we're appealing to the parents of the children who may have first-hand or second-hand knowledge of what happened to Lauren.'

He added: 'I still don't understand what's happened over the last four weeks. I can tell you it's our worst nightmare.

'It's an experience you don't want anyone to ever have to go through. We long for the moment when we see her again.'

The couple, from Egremont, New York, have spent the last four weeks in Bloomington, desperately searching for their daughter.

Last week it emerged Mr Rosenbaum, the last person to see Lauren, had hired and a high-profile criminal defence lawyer and left his Bloomington condo.

Lauren's boyfriend, Jesse Wolff, and three other friends - Corey Rossman, Mike Beth, and David Rohn, who all saw her during the last few hours before she disappeared - are also said to have retained lawyers.

Police have said the five students all remain 'persons of interest' in the case.

Rosenbaum's lawyer said his client had passed a lie detector test.

Officers previously released surveillance footage of the pretty blonde leaving her apartment on the night she disappeared, sparking hundreds of tip-offs.

Her friends' decision to hire lawyers has frustrated her family and police, who say only one of Lauren's friends has come forward with information.

Describing their reluctance to cooperate, Bloomington police Captain Joe Qualters told People: 'Perplexing? Perhaps. Curious. Disturbing. All in all, I think I'd probably characterise it as unfortunate.'
