Long before these bodies were found, they were randomly finding bodies out east here by me. And people were saying (including myself) Helloooo! Serial killer!!! But the police kept saying calm down, there's no serial killer and none of them are connected (even though a few were known call girls). Then Gilgo beach happens and what do you know? Body parts found at Gilgo belonged to body parts found in Manorville!

It's weird (and scary) that no other bodies turned up. Makes you wonder if who ever was doing it stopped, died or found a new dumping ground.
I agree about shannan. Her family argued that she was killed because her jeans had been taken off. But isn't removing clothes a sign of hypothermia?

    It can be.

2 Years Later, Relatives Frustrated Over Lack Of Progress In Gilgo Beach Case

OAK BEACH, NY (CBSNewYork) It's been two years since four bodies were found along Ocean Parkway, launching a massive investigation into a suspected serial killer on Long Island.

On Dec. 11, 2010, police discovered the first set of human remains while searching for New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert, who went missing months earlier.

The bodies of Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes and Melissa Barthelemy were the first four of 10 bodies eventually found on Gilgo Beach between December 2010 and April 2011.

All were found along a seven mile stretch of Ocean Parkway.

Two years later, relatives say they're frustrated that there have been no new leads in the case.

I haven't seen very much progress, said Waterman's aunt Elizabeth Meserve. I want to find her killer. I'm not even sure if all of the victims are from the same killer and it would be nice to have the unidentified to be identified.

Last year, police released sketches of two of the unidentified victims. Among those is a female toddler, 18 to 24-months-old, who was found wrapped in a blanket along the highway.

Police said the toddler appeared to be the daughter of one of the unidentified women who was found seven miles away in Nassau County.

Gilbert's remains were found on Dec. 13, 2011 in a marshy area on Oak Beach about a quarter-mile from where her cell phone, purse, jeans, shoes and lip gloss were found the week before.

Detectives believe Gilbert drowned when she was last seen running and screaming for help in Oak Beach back in May of 2010. The results of her autopsy classified her death as undetermined.

Last month, her family filed a civil lawsuit against the last known person believed to have seen Gilbert alive.

I watched a serial killer Sunday special on the Long Island Killer today. They interviewed a lot of the girls' families. I had NO idea that the killer repeatedly called the sister of one of the girls.

Nearly five years to the day the first of 10 sets of human remains believed to be linked to at least one serial killer were unearthed in the dunes along the Long Island shore, local authorities say they have asked federal investigators to take an increased role in the probe.

The decision to take a fresh look at the investigation comes amid administrative upheaval at the Suffolk County Police Department, which has been the lead agency in the case for five years.
The 10 sets of remains were discovered while police were combing the beaches for Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey escort who went missing while on a call in May 2010. No arrests have been made and authorities have never identified any potential suspects.

A top-to-bottom assessment followed the introduction of new police department leadership, Suffolk authorities said, and that included evaluating the unsolved Gilgo murders. Police said Thursday they believed it was time to take a fresh look at the complex investigation, and they asked the FBI to take a more prominent role.
Suffolk officials did not comment on any new potential developments in the case, nor did they comment on any specific resources or steps the FBI or local authorities would take in the investigation. Authorities reiterated federal and local authorities would be collaborating.

Police were combing Gilgo Beach on Dec. 11, 2010, in connection with the search for Gilbert when they found the first set of remains, those of Melissa Barthelemy, a call girl who had vanished in 2007.
Over the next several weeks, they discovered the remains of Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, an unidentified Asian man, three unidentified women and an unidentified toddler. No arrests have been made in any of the slayings.

Remains belonging to Gilbert -- who was last seen screaming and running away from a home in the Oak Beach complex where she met a client -- were found in December 2011.
Authorities have said that Gilbert likely drowned in the salt marsh where her body was later found; her family says they believe she is the victim of a serial killer.

The Suffolk County Police Department has been turned on its head over the last several months. Longtime Police Chief James Burke resigned his post in October and was indicted earlier this week on civil rights and conspiracy charges after he allegedly handcuffed and beat a man who broke into his department -issued SUV. Burke is likely to be succeeded by Timothy Sini, a former federal prosecutor who specialized in cold case killings, according to Newsday.
Police Commissioner Edward Webber has announced his retirement effective Jan. 23, and Chief of Detectives William Madigan also announced he'll be retiring.
At a news briefing Thursday, Suffolk authorities said they were committed to solving the Gilgo case and pledged to the victims' families they were doing everything possible to solve the murders.
The FBI has previously provided technical and other support in the investigation, but the case has been cold for some time. >>> http://bit.ly/1OWJxp2

There is a totally un substantiated rumor that the person responsible was a very unstable connected person who died before police could find definitive proof.
Absolutely no link or back up, but it is a rumor being spread locally.

The guy that hired Gilbert has to be involved. I've never understood how they were able to clear him so quickly. I mean, she ran terrified from that home for a reason. I think that she was the next victim and managed to escape only to end up in the marshes and died from the elements.

    Whoa!

Mother of Shannan Gilbert killed, daughter charged, cops say

Mari Gilbert, the mother of Shannan Gilbert, whose remains were found near Gilgo Beach and led to the discovery of 10 sets of human remains, was found dead in her Ellenville apartment Saturday and her other daughter has been charged, police said Sunday.

Sarra Elizabeth Gilbert, 27, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon, Ellenville police said in a news release on Facebook.

Police said Mari Gilbert, 52, was killed at 9 Warren Street in Apartment No. 2, where her body was found. The slaying took place sometime during the morning hours of Saturday, police said.

There were no further details immediately available.

Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker, disappeared near a remote stretch of Ocean Parkway. Her remains were found and led to the search that uncovered human remains which police believe may have been the work of a serial killer.

Sarra Elizabeth Gilbert was arraigned and remanded to the Ulster County Jail with no bail, police said.

    She has schizophrenia

    http://www.newsday.com/news/region-s...ing-1.12096000

Shannan Gilbert's sister sorry at hearing for mom?s fatal stabbing

ELLENVILLE, N.Y. - Sarra Gilbert, accused of fatally stabbing her mother here Saturday ? nearly five years after the discovery of her sister Shannan?s body near Gilgo Beach during the search for a serial killer, apologized before a court hearing Tuesday.

?I love my family and I?m very sorry . . . ? a handcuffed Gilbert, clad in an orange jailhouse jumpsuit, told reporters as Ulster County sheriff?s deputies escorted her into court.

Mari Gilbert served as a vocal advocate in the pursuit of justice for her daughter Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker who went missing in 2010. The search for Shannan Gilbert uncovered 10 sets of remains that police said may have been the work of one or possibly more serial killers. Her body was found in Oak Beach in December 2011.

Saturday, she had gone to her daughter Sarra?s apartment to check on her when she was killed, according to John Ray, who has long represented the Gilbert family as they sought answers for Shannan?s death. Police officers arrived at Sarra Gilbert?s apartment Saturday afternoon to find her in bloody clothing and her mother?s body nearby.

They arrested Gilbert at the scene and recovered a 15-inch kitchen knife they believe was used in the killing.

Ray, of Miller Place, represented Sarra Gilbert on Tuesday at her hearing before Judge Matthew J. Parker in Ellenville Village Court. Parker ordered Gilbert, the mother of a 7-year-old boy, remanded to Ulster County Jail. He also ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation ? against her initial wishes.

Sarra Gilbert has schizophrenia and made it clear in a closed-door meeting with Parker before the hearing that she wanted to enter a guilty plea, said Ray, who also attended the meeting.

?Sarra wants me to express to the court that she does not wish to submit to a psychiatric exam,? Ray said, noting that he advised Gilbert multiple times that she should consent to the evaluation. ?She expressed that she wanted to enter a guilty plea, but this is often the case with people who are not mentally competent, so that expression is not given very much weight by anyone.?

Parker patiently explained criminal case procedure to Gilbert and told her she could not plead guilty to a felony in village court. The judge also advised Gilbert to take her lawyer?s advice and agree to his court order.

?It is important that we as a court understand, that you understand the charges, that you are capable of aiding in your defense and you can understand the advice that counsel has given,? the judge told Gilbert.

She nodded and replied, ?Yes, I understand,? before agreeing to undergo the evaluation.

Ray requested ?reasonable? bail, citing Gilbert?s strong ties to this small, upstate village and surrounding community. A prosecutor on the case called her a ?significant flight risk.?

Gilbert killed her mother while out on bail in an animal cruelty case in which she is accused of drowning her pit bull puppy, said Ulster County Assistant District Attorney Emmanuel Nneji.

?She?s a significant flight risk given the conduct she?s accused of here,? Nneji said. ?The character she has displayed, given that she drowned the puppy . . . and in doing what she?s accused of doing here, that should suggest to the court that she?s a significant flight risk.?

According to court documents, at about 10 a.m. Saturday inside her Warren Street home, Sarra Gilbert ?intentionally repeatedly stabbed? her mother with a 15-inch kitchen knife and struck her with a fire extinguisher, causing her death.

Family members asked police to check on Mari Gilbert?s condition after they grew concerned when she didn?t answer her phone, authorities said.

Ray said Sarra Gilbert, who had been hospitalized in the last year for her mental health issues, was not taking her medication and was ?hearing voices? in the days before the killing and had been fighting with family members for custody of her son, now living with his father?s family.

Sarra Gilbert is due back in court Aug. 16.

Gilbert family members did not attend the hearing and declined to comment. A family friend, Yolanda Cianci, said outside court that she knew the Gilberts from the village and had followed the news coverage of the mystery surrounding Shannan Gilbert?s death. The Suffolk medical examiner has said her cause of death remains ?undetermined? and police have said it is not linked to the other victims.

?It?s heartbreaking,? said Cianci, 68. ?When is the pain for all those girls going to stop??

I watched "People Magazine Investigates" on the ID channel. (comes on Monday's)
    http://people.com/crime/people-magaz...serial-killer/
    The episode online
    https://www.investigationdiscoverygo...he-lost-girls/

I thought it was very detailed. It went through all the evidence and suspects. Interviewed some family (along with Shannon's mother who's now dead)

I don't remember one of the suspects being a doctor. Very compelling evidence against him. He phoned one of the victim's family, lied to police and said he didn't, but the proof showed he did. He lived so close by where one of the bodies was found.

They talked on the show how some suspected that the police chief may have been involved and there was a sex ring going on at one of the wealthy men's house. The men were buying these escorts for the night, then killing them.
Whoever was killing these women was able to convince the woman to leave her purse and cell phone before she came. None bought a driver...except Shannon.
The police chief wouldn't let the FBI come in, and eventually, he was arrested on charges related to escorts.

Also, Shannon's whole 911 call was about 23 minutes long. The police won't release it.

They also bought up the serial killings in Atlantic City. Some think those may be connected.
The first 4 bodies found were wrapped in burlap and strangled.
The rest found on Long Island were cut up and scattered
The ones in Atlantic City were strangled but left out in the open.

There's also a new documentary called "The killing season" on A&E (comes on Sat's. It's 9 parts)

You can watch the first part online

James Burke is a slimy sack of shit. And yes, there's plenty like him in these parts.

I don't believe every single set of remains found were from "the serial killer". A mother AND her child just reeks of gang activity.

    Wow. 227 times!

THE lawyers defending a woman who stabbed her mother 227 times, believe she is too “psychotic” to be sent to prison.

The lawyer, John Ray, told reporters at upstate Kingston Criminal Court, Ontario, Canada that his client, Sarra Gilbert, “will kill again’’ if sent to prison instead of a psychiatric facility.

“Sarra’s insane. Sarra’s violent. She is extremely psychotic, and in her psychosis, she has been repeatedly homicidal,” he said, according to the Middletown Times Herald-Record.

A jury rejected Ray’s criminal insanity defence, and convicted Sarra, 27, of butchering her mum, Mari, 52, last summer.

“She killed her mother. She was going to kill her son. She was going to kill her sisters. The chances that Sarra, in a prison, even on meds, will not commit another homicide are very slim,” according to Ray.

Sarra’s sister, Shannan Gilbert, 24, was one of 11 prostitutes who fell victim to the Long Island serial killer in 2010.

Someone should tell Sarra's attorneys that it's 2017 and everyone knows antipsychotic meds have been readily for psychosis since the 1950. There are now dozens of antipsychotic meds under 5 subtypes. She'll very likely respond to one unless she has been psychotic for years. If she's treatment resistant, she can be prescribed sedatives or tranquilizers or both.

There are many psychotic people in prison. She won't be alone. It irks me that her attorneys think psychiatric patients and unarmed nurses/psych techs should be put at risk by Sarra's violent actions instead of prisoners protected by armed guards.
