FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — One man ran naked through a Florida neighborhood, tried to have sex with a tree and told police he was the mythical god Thor. Another ran nude down a busy city street in broad daylight, convinced a pack of German shepherds was pursuing him.

Two others tried separately to break into the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. They said they thought people were chasing them; one wound up impaled on a fence.

The common element to these and other bizarre incidents in Florida in the last few months is flakka, an increasingly popular synthetic designer drug. Also known as gravel and readily available for $5 or less a vial, it's a growing problem for police after bursting on the scene in 2013.

It is the latest in a series of synthetic drugs that include Ecstasy and bath salts, but officials say flakka is even easier to obtain in small quantities through the mail. Flakka's active ingredient is a chemical compound called alpha-PVP, which is on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's list of the controlled substances most likely to be abused. It is usually made overseas in countries such as China and Pakistan.

Flakka, a derivative of the Spanish word for a thin, pretty woman, is usually sold in a crystal form and is often smoked using electronic cigarettes, which are popular with young people and give off no odor. It can also be snorted, injected or swallowed.

"I've had one addict describe it as $5 insanity," said Don Maines, a drug treatment counselor with the Broward Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale. "They still want to try it because it's so cheap. It gives them heightened awareness. They feel stronger and more sensitive to touch. But then the paranoia sets in."

Judging from the evidence being seized by police around Florida, flakka use is up sharply. Submissions for testing to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's crime labs have grown from 38 in 2013 to 228 in 2014. At the Broward Sheriff's Office laboratory, flakka submissions grew from fewer than 200 in 2014 to 275 already, in just the first three months of this year, according to spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion.

"It's definitely something we are watching. It's an emerging drug," said Chad Brown, an FDLE supervisory special agent.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, reports of flakka or gravel also have surfaced in Ohio, Texas and Tennessee, but Florida appears to be the nation's hot spot.http://www.kval.com/news/national/In...301811491.html

One article I read mentioned something about damage to the kayak I think?? Like, maybe they can tell she may have attacked him with her oar or something. Crazy shit. I tried to find her Facebook but couldn't, that article referenced how she was mourning him on her FB page.

i was reading the comments and someone was saying that the conditions that night were not conditions people should be kayaking in, especially without a life vest and that they think that maybe the kayaking was a cover story. it is sort of strange that she would put her own life in jeopardy in order to kill him.

Reading the article, she didn't confess, she is claiming she is being wrongly accused. And his body still hasn't been found.

The only thing I read about the kayak being tampered with, is that is what SHE said (the fianc? said the cops are falsely accusing her of murdering him by tampering with his kayak, but nothing in the article says the cops say that. The cops are refusing to say why they believe she murdered him, just that her story kept changing and that they "tripped her up" and she somehow implicated herself. I would like to know what she said that made them believe that!)

I thought of that, too. But maybe that wasn't the plan....maybe she called 911 and then she accidently ended up falling in?

So basically a brother & sister both lost their relatively young spouses, who both died at home, within 2 days of each other, in the same town. Damn. Tragic and unusual

And people accuse us of disrespecting the dead...
    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/...ce-say-n354121
An Oklahoma woman slashed the face of her boyfriend's dead ex-girlfriend while the body was on display at a funeral home, police say.

Shaynna Smith, 28, of Tulsa was charged with illegal dissection of a body. She cut the dead woman's hair and slashed the face from her hairline to the tip of her nose during a viewing last Friday at Moore Funeral Home, according to Tulsa police.

"The funeral director informed us that the deceased's body was in a viewing room when some friends and family came to pay their respects," said Leland Ashley, a spokesman for Tulsa police. "When they entered, they observed at least one female with their hands inside the casket."

The woman, a 38-year-old whose cause of death was not disclosed, "once dated Smith's current boyfriend," Ashley said, but police did not know of a motive for the desecration. The dead woman's makeup was smeared, and Smith allegedly stole her shoes.

Smith then went to the dead woman's home "under the pretense that she was sent there to receive jewelry so that she could take it back and put it on the deceased for viewing," Tulsa police Sgt. Shane Tuell told NBC News affiliate KJRH.

When officers arrived at the home, they found Smith, who had a knife with pieces of hair on it, Ashley said.

Man Sues Hospital After His Own Leg Was Found in Trash

A Florida man is suing a hospital after his amputated leg was found in the trash.
According to the Miami Herald, the Key Largo man went to Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables to have his leg amputated below his knee.
The hospital then threw the leg away instead of incinerating it, which is the normal practice.

"Walking Dead" Star Regrets Profane Subway Rant: Report
The man found out about the incident when homicide detectives knocked on his door and asked him why
his leg was found at a waste management facility with the man's name tag still attached
    .

Hospital officials have not explained how the mistake was made. Doctor's Hospital released a statement, saying in part,
"When Doctors Hospital was notified of this situation, hospital leaders took immediate and appropriate measures to address it.

Proper procedures have been reinforced at the hospital to prevent similar situations from happening in the future."

In the man's lawsuit, he claims emotional distress. The lawsuit claims the man suffered an invasion of privacy, embarrassment and humiliation because of the incident.

Woman seeks rescue from boyfriend in online pizza order

AVON PARK, Fla. (AP) ? A central Florida woman who says her boyfriend was holding her and her children hostage sent a secret message asking for help in an online pizza order.

Highlands County Investigators told WFLA-TV a Pizza Hut in Avon Park received an online order for pizza Monday afternoon from Cheryl Treadway. Under the comments section, Treadway wrote a message asking employees to call 911. The employees alerted police.

When deputies arrived at the home, Treadway answered the door and said her boyfriend, Ethan Nickerson had a knife. Deputies escorted Treadway and a child to safety and Highlands County Sherriff's Lt. Curtis Ludden says Nickerson was arrested. Two other children in the home were unharmed.

Deputies say Nickerson had been holding Treadway all day until she convinced him to let her order a pizza on her cellphone.

Nickerson was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon without intent to kill, battery, false imprisonment and obstructing justice by depriving communication to law enforcement.

I'm impressed by the fact that she managed to do this, but really impressed that the pizza worker caught it. So often they can't manage to get "extra cheese" or "no onions"

    Good catch.

    Also wise!

I used to nerd out on WoW, and there was a story where a kid and his sister were out in the forest and approached by a bear. The kid told his sister to "feign death" (play dead), they did, and the bear left them alone. When he was asked how he knew how to do that, he said he learned it from a move hunters do in WoW.

I love it when awesome amounts of common sense and tricks come into play.

I have the "don't go for the hands when someone starts choking you but immediatly press your thumbs into their eyes" escape route. Don't know if it would actually work, seems kinda gross but it's the first thing I think of when I see someone being strangled.

Glad this one worked out ok. Everybody did the right thing at the right time. I love it when that happens.

Cool way to throw police off your body dump scene. Dress em up like a practical joke & the police dept will turn up & take happy snaps with your victims instead of crime scene shots.

Man is raped at gunpoint by THREE women so they could collect his semen in a cooler box and 'steal' it in South Africa

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...th-Africa.html

A man was kidnapped at gunpoint and raped by three women who collected his semen in a cool box and stealing it before abandoning their victim - and the method is part of a growing trend.

The 33-year-old man gave the women directions when they pulled up in a black BMW. Suddenly, one of the women armed with a gun got out and forced him into the back of the car at gunpoint.

The trio then drove him 500km away and fondled him in the back of the car but he did not become aroused, so they forced him to drink an 'unknown substance' from a bottle to aid him. The women raped the man repeatedly and collected his semen in plastic

bags, placing them in a cooler box. The man was then kicked out of the car, 500 km away from where they picked him up in the Kwazakhele township, Port Elizabeth, and made off with the stolen sperm.

The exact same method is being used by women in Gauteng, who are also forcing men to drink from a bottle and stealing their semen but no arrests have been made.
