The tale of the Smithfield boy, the goat and the tree

SMITHFIELD, Cache County ? It started as a report for a missing child, but he was found after police got a report of a goat that had chased a teenage boy up a tree.

He may have a villainous name, but 1 ?-year-old Voldemort is a nice goat, his owner said.

?He?s really happy and plays with the kids,? Marissa Benson said. ?I?ve never had him chase my kids.?

She and her two kids have owned Voldemort since he was two days old. He is a fainting goat, which means he?s narcoleptic and will fall asleep when scared. But Tuesday morning he put the fear in someone else.

Fourteen-year-old Jaxon Gessel was on his early morning paper route when the chain holding Voldemort broke. The goat made its way across Smithfield's Main Street under cover of darkness.

Gessel said the early morning dark made it difficult to make out the creature as it approached him near 300 South and Main Street. He didn?t think much of it, figuring it was a dog because he sees dogs all the time on his route.

?Then it made a weird noise, kind of like a grunting noise,? he said. The shadowy figure started coming at him. ?I?m like, ?What the heck is that???

He said Voldemort head-butted him off his bike. He tried to get away by jumping back on his bike, but the goat tackled him.

?It just freaked me out when it stood up on its hind legs and just wrapped its front legs around me and pulled me off,? he said.

The teenager took shelter in a tree. Whenever someone would walk by, the goat would chase after them.

?It had like a collar on, so I grabbed it by the collar to keep it off of the other people because I didn?t want anybody else getting hurt,? he said.

The boy was able to get out of the tree, but was chased right back up. He was up in the tree for about an hour when two little girls walked by and were freaked out by Voldemort, he said.

Jaxon said that brought new urgency to get down out of the tree. He grabbed the goat and chased it down for a block or two.

Meantime, Smithfield police officer Brandon Muir was working a missing child case called in by Gessel?s parents. He hadn?t come home from his paper route and was about 90 minutes overdue. That?s when Muir got a call about a boy and a goat.
When Muir arrived, he said the goat was overly friendly. ?It jumped on me a few times,? he said. ?But he wasn?t that hard to catch.?

No one was hurt, and Voldemort is back to causing trouble at home.

Gessel said it was a strange morning, one his classmates won't soon let him forget.

He said, "Everybody, they're all, 'Hey, goat boy!' I'm like, 'Hey, guys.'"

He said faced with Voldemort in the dark, people might react the same way. "People are just like, 'Why are you scared of goats? I'm like that was a freaky goat. I think it's like possessed or something."

Benson said she was sorry for what happened to Jaxon. "I feel horrible that the whole thing happened,? she said. But both Jaxon and Voldemort returned safely to their homes.

Cops: Man plotted attack during 'Twilight' movie

20-year-old Blaec Lammers was charged with three felony counts on Friday. Police say he had purchased movie tickets, two assault rifles and 400 rounds of ammunition.

BOLIVAR, Mo. ? A southwest Missouri man accused of plotting to shoot up a movie theater during the new "Twilight" film was charged Friday after his mother contacted police, telling them she worried her son had purchased weapons similar to those used during the fatal Colorado theater shooting.

Blaec Lammers, 20, of Bolivar, is charged with first-degree assault, making a terroristic threat and armed criminal action. He was jailed in Polk County on $500,000 bond.

"Thankfully we had a responsible family member or we might have had a different outcome," Bolivar Police Chief Steve Hamilton told The Associated Press. He said Lammers is under a doctor's care for mental illness, and court documents said he was "off of his medication."

A phone message left by The Associated Press at Lammers' home wasn't returned Friday. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

His mother contacted authorities Thursday, saying she worried that with this weekend's opening of the final film in the popular Vampire movie series, her son "may have intentions of shooting people at the movie," police wrote in the probable cause statement.

She said she thought the weapons ? two assault rifles and hundreds of bullets ? resembled those used by a gunman who opened fire inside a theater in Aurora, Colo., during the latest Batman movie in July. That attack killed 12 people.

Lammers was questioned Thursday afternoon and told authorities he bought tickets to a Sunday "Twilight" screening in Bolivar and planned to shoot people inside the theater. The town of roughly 10,000 people is about 130 miles southeast of Kansas City.

According to the probable cause statement, Lammers also planned to "just start shooting people at random" at a Walmart store less than a mile away. He said he'd purchased two assault rifles and 400 rounds of ammunition, and if he ran out of bullets, he would "just break the glass where the ammunition is being stored and get some more and keep shooting until police arrived," investigators wrote.

Lammers stated he wanted to stab a Walmart employee to death and followed an employee around a Walmart store before officers got involved in 2009, according to police.

When asked about recent shootings in the news, Lammers told police "he had a lot in common with the people that have been involved in those shootings," the probable cause statement said. Investigators also wrote that Lammers said he "was quiet, kind of a loner, had recently purchased firearms and didn't tell anybody about it, and had homicidal thoughts."

Police said Lammers bought one firearm Monday and another Tuesday. He then went to the Missouri town of Aldrich to practice shooting because he "had never shot a gun before and wanted to make sure he knew how they shot and how they functioned," the probable cause statement said.

Hamilton said it appeared that Lammers obtained the firearms legally but that police were continuing to investigate "to determine how in fact he was able to obtain a permit."

Ashley Miller, who lives in a nearby town, said she has known Lammers for about a year and described him as "one of the sweetest guys I had ever met" but "very emotional," noting he would periodically stop talking to her.

She said he told her that he had bounced between relatives growing up. As an adult, he bounced between girlfriends, she said.

"He was never actually happy," she told the AP in a phone interview. "I think he had depression or something."

Polk County prosecutor Ken Ashlock said Lammers' first court appearance likely will happen Wednesday. He said his office would file a motion asking for a mental exam of Lammers. He said he wasn't aware of any charges in the 2009 Walmart incident.

Like the police chief, the prosecutor credited Lammers' mother for contacting police.

"It was a good thing they found what they found and took care of it," Ashlock said. "Everything was there as far as the weapons. He did have the weapons; he did have the ammunition ... Those things were all there, and then he made the statements to the officer about what his plans were."

Documentary says serial killer involved in Simpson case
A criminal profiler says paintings by convicted killer Glen Rogers suggest he was involved in the 1994 murders of O.J. Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

TAMPA, Fla. ? A documentary about an inmate on Florida's death row says the convicted killer might have been involved in the murder of O.J. Simpson's ex-wife and her friend.

The Investigation Discovery show, "My Brother the Serial Killer," will air Wednesday.

The film is a look at Glen Rogers, who was convicted by a Florida jury in 1997 for killing a woman. Rogers was also convicted of murder in California and is a suspect in homicides in several other states.

Rogers met Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994 when he was living in Southern California, his family says in the documentary.

A criminal profiler in the film says he received paintings by Rogers with clues possibly linking him to the murders of Simpson's ex-wife and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

Simpson was accused in those killings but the so-called "trial of the century" in Los Angeles ended with his acquittal in 1995.

Simpson never testified at the criminal trial, but memorably demonstrated in court that a glove found near the slaying scene did not fit his hand. He testified at length in a wrongful death trial that led a Los Angeles civil court jury in 1997 to find him liable for damages in the case.

Much of the film is narrated by Rogers' brother, Clay Rogers, who used to rob homes with Glen as a teen but called police on his brother in 1993 after finding a body at the family's Kentucky cabin.

Clay Rogers said that in 1994, his brother told him about meeting Nicole Brown Simpson.

"They've got money, they're well off and I'm taking her down," Clay Rogers recalls Glen Rogers saying.

Other family members also said Glen Rogers talked about meeting Simpson's ex-wife.

In a statement, Goldman's sister criticized the new documentary.

"I am appalled at the level of irresponsibility demonstrated by the network and the producers of this so-called documentary," Kim Goldman said. "This is the first time we are hearing about this story, and considering that their 'main character,' Glen Rogers, confessed to stabbing my brother and Nicole to death, you would think we would be in the loop."

Simpson is currently serving a prison sentence in Nevada after being convicted in 2008 of leading five men, including two with guns, in a September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers and a middleman at a Las Vegas casino-hotel.

Don't get me wrong, clearly broad was being an asshole.. but arrest worthy??

    ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. —

Police said a woman was arrested at the Walmart in Altamonte Springs after repeatedly trying to cut the checkout line on Black Friday.

Police said they were asked to respond to the front of the store after shoppers began to argue over several people who tried to cut in line.

At about 10:45 p.m., police said they saw Samantha Chavez, 28, attempt to bypass the line.

Officers told Chavez she needed to follow the flow of the checkout line, but she again tried to cut, police said.

Police said that after several more warnings, Chavez began to scream, so they tried to escort her from the store.

She was arrested after she began throwing her shopping items on the floor, according to police.

Chavez was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer without violence. She was booked into the Seminole County Jail.

True. I don't know, people like this always amuse me to a certain extent. It's probably not amusing when these people really go postal and start hurting other people.. but I would and have spoke up to people that are acting a fool in public. Get your big boy/girl pants on and act accordingly. No one cares about your freak out.

Seriously. I hate shit like this. And as a guy, I hate being around that shit, cause if she comes at me, she's gonna hit the floor, and then I gotta run like hell. I'm NOT waiting for the cops to explain why I had to hit a chick.

OMAHA (KPTM)- Police arrested a woman Monday night after they say she stole wreaths, flowers, and decorations off of at least one grave site in Council Bluffs for months.

Iileen Wallace faces charges for trespassing and theft.

Police say it's more common for people to steal things from graves of monetary value, such as copper or other metals. Doug Lantry says what Wallace stole from his wife's grave had more sentimental value.

His wife, Anna, died just over 5 months ago from cancer. Lantry says they were married for "41 years, 4 months, 4 days. She was a wonderful Mother."

Lantry visits her grave everyday at the Ridgewood Cemetery. "I just come up to visit, usually clean the head stone off and the bench and clean off any branches laying around and just sit and visit."

During one of his visits in August, he noticed some of the wreaths and decorations were missing. "It was frustrating, it was aggravating, I was mad as heck," said Lantry.

Lantry says he caught a woman red handed afternoon that he believes was Wallace. "I was sitting on this bench one day and saw a lady pull up on the hill. She got out of her car and went to a grave, picked up some flowers and left. My thought was she just stole those flowers!"

Lantry tried to catch up with her before she drove off. Afterwards, he kept watch himself, sometimes for hours a day. Because he couldn't always keep a watch over Anna's grave, he installed deer cameras nearby that take pictures whenever they track motion.

Lantry said he noticed in the pictures that every time Wallace was there, something went missing. Ground keepers also caught her taking a wreath from another grave site on a camera phone.

"I Thought she was about the lowest life type of person I could imagine," said Lantry.

Lantry hopes now that Wallace was caught, he and his wife's grave will be left in peace.

Lantry plans to leave the cameras in place. Police say Wallace would be arrested again if she tries to go back to the cemetery.

Police: Chiefs LB Belcher kills self

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend early Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.

Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though police said that Belcher and his girlfriend had been arguing recently. The two of them have an infant child.

Belcher thanked general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel before shooting himself in the parking lot outside the team's practice facility, police spokesman Darin Snapp said. Police had locked it down by mid-morning and reporters were confined to Arrowhead Drive just outside the gates.

The news cast a pall over the organization as it prepared to play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. There was no official word whether the game would be played as scheduled.

Belcher was a 25-year-old native of West Babylon, N.Y., on Long Island, who played college ball at Maine. He signed with the Chiefs an undrafted free agent but had stuck around for four years, moving into the starting lineup. He'd played in all 11 games this season.

"I struggle a little bit, obviously, because Jovan Belcher's profile elevates the subject," Kansas City Mayor Sly James said. "I hope people will look at the situation and try not to judge the person. There are a lot of people hurting. There's a young baby right now without parents."

Authorities reported receiving a call Saturday morning from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles away from the Arrowhead complex.

"When we arrived, a lady informed us that her daughter had been shot multiple times by her boyfriend, by the daughter's boyfriend," Snapp said.

Snapp said a call was then received from the Chiefs' facility.

"The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with," Snapp said. The player was "holding a gun to his head" as he stood in front of the front doors of the practice facility.

"And there were Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him. It appeared they were talking to the suspect," Snapp said. "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger, Snapp said.

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him," he said. "They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

Snapp described the girlfriend as in her early 20s and that she and the player had a child together. He said the woman's mother told police they had recently been arguing.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

James said that he spoke to Pioli after the incident, and while he refused to discuss the GM's emotional state, the mayor said Pioli was "extremely concerned that fans of this team are not disappointed and not left in the cold."

"I think they think there's an obligation to the people of this city, the fans of the team and the fans of the other team to play the game," James said.

The season has been a massive disappointment for the Chiefs, who were expected to contend for the AFC West title. They're just 1-10 and mired in an eight-game losing streak marked by injuries, poor play and fan upheaval, with calls for Pioli and Crennel to be fired.

The Twitter account for a fan group known as "Save Our Chiefs" recently surpassed 80,000 followers, about 17,000 more than the announced crowd at a recent game.

So I read a similar article about this story and said something very snarky aloud to my boyfriend - something I wouldn't hesitate to read or find on MDS and he turned around and said I was super cold and the comment was completely uncalled for. MDS has ruined me.
