Andrew Conley (17) strangled his brother to "satisfy a craving" and blamed the death on the Showtime series Dexter

Saw this update on the news tonight:

Andrew Conley Enters Guilty Plea, Says He Was Inspired by 'Dexter' to Strangle Brother

An Indiana teen who likened strangling his little brother to satisfying a craving for a hamburger pleaded guilty today to murder charges. Anthony Conley, now 18, admitted to authorities late last year that he was inspired by the television series about a serial killer, "Dexter," after he turned himself into authorities.

Today in a Rising Sun, Ohio, court, Conley pleaded guilty just as jury selection was set to begin, according to The Associated Press.

Defense attorneys had been expected to argue Conley was insane at the time, according to the report.

Because Conley was still a minor when he killed his brother he was not eligible for the death penalty, but he could be sentenced to 65 years in prison.

Messages left for Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard and for Gary Sorge, Conley's attorney, were not immediately returned.

Negangard told ABC News at the time of Conley's arrest that the teen said he stuffed his 10-year-old brother Conner into a plastic bag so that blood "wouldn't get everywhere."
"It's disturbing that a 17-year-old would want to kill under any circumstances, let alone his own brother," said Negangard. He described Conley as "emotionless" when he was interviewed by police.

According to Negangard, Conley turned himself into authorities the day after he murdered his brother. But the night before, Conley said he stopped at his girlfriend's home to give her a "sweetheart ring." The couple also watched the movie "The Green Mile," which focuses on the lives of prison guards on death row.

"His girlfriend described him as the happiest he had been in a long while," said Negangard. Negangard said that when Conley was asked to explain his behavior by investigators the teen said he identified with Dexter Morgan, the main character in Showtime's "Dexter," which chronicles the life of an undercover Miami blood spatter expert who doubles as a serial killer.

"Conley said that he just 'felt like him,'" said Negangard.

Reached for comment, a Showtime spokesperson had no comment.

This is the second murder that was allegedly inspired by "Dexter." In 2008, a 29-year-old Canadian man Mark Twitchell mimicked a story line from the drama when he allegedly killed 39-year-old Johnny Altinger. Twitchell was dubbed a "fervid fan" of the show in news reports.

Melissa Rosenberg, the show's executive producer, told Canwest News Service at the time that this was a "worst fears" situation, and one that the show's creators "worried about from the beginning."

In interviews with investigators, Conley also allegedly likened his desire to kill to a craving a person gets when they want a particular food.

"He analogized the murder to when someone wants a hamburger," said Negangard. "He said that when someone wants a hamburger they've just got to have it."

Conley admitted to strangling his brother on a Saturday night when their parents were both at work. Stuffing his brother's dead body in the back of his car, he then drove to his girlfriend's house where he spent the night.

Sometime the next day, authorities said Conley dumped his brother's body in a park just a few hundred yards from where the 10-year-old attended elementary school.

The next morning Conley was asked by his parents – both of whom Negangard said work night shifts – where his little brother was. Conley told his parents that his little brother was at his grandmother's home, which was apparently not unusual.

But when asked to pick up his brother a few hours later, Conley drove to the police station and turned himself in.

"The defendant walked into the police station and indicated that he had killed his brother," Negangard said. Later, Conley told authorities that he had been having trouble sleeping, the prosecutor said.

RISING SUN, Ind. -- A 17-year-old boy charged in connection to the death of his younger brother admitted to the crime, according to Rising Sun police.

An Ohio County Sheriff's Deputy found 10-year-old Conner Conley's body on Sunday night in a wooded area near the city park off Shiner Boulevard.

Prosecutors say Andrew Conley walked into the Rising Sun Police Department on Sunday and told officers he killed his brother while they were wrestling.

Andrew told police he put his brother in a headlock and then went to the ground, according to prosecutors. Andrew told investigators that he placed his hands around Conner's throat until his face became discolored. At that point, according to prosecutors, Andrew realized his brother was dead and then placed a bag over his head and secured it with electrical tape. He then placed Conner's body inside a vehicle and transported him to a trail behind Ohio County Elementary Middle School. That's where the deputy found Conner's body.

Conner was a fifth grader at the school.

Andrew is now charged with murder. He will be tried as an adult.

An autopsy was performed on Tuesday, but officials have not released its findings.

RISING SUN, Ind. -- A southeastern Indiana youth who a prosecutor says fantasized about killing someone will face adult charges of murder in the strangulation death of his 10-year-old brother.

According to court documents, 17-year-old Andrew Conley walked into the Rising Sun Police Department Sunday and told them he'd killed his brother, Conner Conley.

The teen said they had been wrestling and he'd placed Conner in a headlock and then went to the ground.

Prosecutors said Andrew Conley told police he placed his hands around the boy's throat until his brother's face became discolored and he was sure he was dead.

The teen then placed Conner's body into a vehicle and dumped his remains behind a recycling bin behind a school near Shiner Boulevard.

Under Indiana law, any 16- or 17-year-old charged with murder has their case automatically moved to adult court.

Prosecutors said Andrew Conley admitted to them that he'd fantasized about killing someone since he was in eighth grade, and compared himself to the fictional serial killer "Dexter" on the Showtime television series.

Prosecutors said the teen told them he had to kill his brother, comparing his need to being hungry and having a hamburger placed in front of him.

Conner begged his brother to stop, prosecutors said, but they said the teen strangled him for 20 minutes and then placed a plastic bag over his head and secured it with electrical tape.

Prosecutors said Andrew Conley also intended to kill his father, who said he awoke Sunday to find his son standing over him with a knife.

Andrew Conley was initially charged Monday with battery causing serious injury and taken into police custody at the Dearborn County Juvenile Detention Center, but he will be transferred late Thursday to the Switzerland County Jail.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday on Conner Conley in Indianapolis, but authorities have not released their findings.

Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard said Andrew Conley will be held in an adult jail.

Negangard described the teenager as evil and a cold-blooded killer and says he might seek life without parole for the youth.

Re: Andrew Conley (17) strangled his brother to "satisfy a craving" and blamed the death on the Showtime series Dexter

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091204/...y_strangled_11

RISING SUN, Ind. – The parents of a teenager accused of strangling his 10-year-old brother to satisfy a craving to kill pulled the teen out of high school two weeks before the killing, a school district official said Friday.

Andrew Conley's parents withdrew him from Rising Sun High School on Nov. 16 — 12 days before prosecutors said he strangled his brother Conner, said Stephen Patz, the superintendent of Rising Sun-Ohio County Community Schools.

Patz declined to state the reasons for the withdrawal, but said both Conley brothers were good students.

"Andrew was a good student, he had friends, he didn't have discipline problems. And the same thing for Conner," he said. "I think that's what makes it difficult for the community, the staff, the students, everyone, to try and come to grips with the situation."

Andrew Conley was scheduled to be arraigned later Friday on an adult charge of murder in his brother's death. His attorney, Gary Sorge of Lawrenceburg, declined to comment about the case through his office receptionist.

According to prosecutors, Andrew Conley showed no remorse when he described to investigators how he choked his younger brother, saying he strangled the boy to satisfy a craving like a hungry person eating a hamburger.

He told police his brother's last words were "Andrew, stop," according to a probable cause affidavit. Conley said he dumped the body near a park in the Ohio River community of about 2,500 residents, 90 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard said Thursday that the nature of the crime shows that "sometimes people are just evil."

"This is an evil child," he said.

Investigators said after he killed his brother, Andrew Conley dragged his body to his car and drove to see his girlfriend, Alexis Murafski. She told investigators Conley gave her a sweetheart ring and "seemed happy, more happy than she had seen him in a while," according to the affidavit.

Murafski's 19-year-old brother, Drew, said Friday that his sister threw the ring into a pond behind their house after she found out about the killing.

"She had been behind him, but when she found out what happened, she said she couldn't keep the ring," Murafski said.

A white cross stood Friday at the site in the park near where the body was found with the messages "In loving memory of" and "classmates of Conner 2009."

Patz said school counselors as well as several ministers are on call at the district's schools to help grieving students, teachers and staff.

Pastor Jim Jenkins of the 75-member First Baptist Church of Rising Sun is among the clergy helping counsel students and staff at the two schools, whom he said have been "greatly affected" by the killing.

"You've got a class of 20 children and all of a sudden one of them is not there and they've been murdered and their face is all over TV and the story is all over the radio. So that's had an impact, more on those in that classroom but also on others," Jenkins said.

The slaying comes weeks after Missouri investigators say a 15-year-old girl, Alyssa Bustamante, told them she strangled, stabbed and cut a 9-year-old neighbor's throat because she wanted to know what it was like to kill someone. A not guilty plea has been entered on her behalf for charges related to the slaying.

How very sad for the parents. I don't know what I'd do if Sam killed Jack.

ugh...this kind of thing used to make me afraid to have kids.

obviously I've gotten over that fear...but still...that's just a pure nightmare to me as a parent...I can't even fathom what their parents must be going through.

It just sounds like the kid is so detached...is that like how sociopaths are?  I remember someone on here talking about it once and it made me wanna google it cuz it just boggles my mind.

20 minutes....jesus. He should have played dead.

I wonder if he actually was dead or not after that 20 minutes of torture. He obviously tied a bag over his head to make ABSOLUTELY sure he had suffocated. His earlier "accident" theory is automatically ruled out.

there was no way to have played dead. More than likely he continued to strangle his brother much more AFTER he passed out. He most likely was not conscious during most of the twenty minutes. Some people think that when people are strangled they are only strangled until they pass out, and are dead. The sad fact is that it takes 5-7 minutes to strangle someone to death, but someone can lose consciousness in a matter or a minute or less. Just imagine him strangling his brothers limp body for almost twenty minutes. Awful. there is no way a manual strangulation can ever be an accident.

That's such a load of bullshit. I know the whole argument of kids being desensitized to violence because of media, but if someone has it in them to kill, they're going to.

Exactly.  I mean, it's not like he's the only kid that's ever watched that show.  I'm sure there's more and we don't have every single kid that watched it going around killing people.

And maybe it's just me, but him being 17, I guess I don't really see him as being so much a "kid" anymore.  And obviously there's plenty of adults that watch that show (don't we even have a thread?) and we don't see them going around killing people cuz they identify with Dexter either.

Unless someone has the ability and desire to kill, shows like Dexter and music like Marilyn Manson are not going to make him strangle his brother or shoot up a high school. It's an excuse for society to not make people culpable for their actions. So yeah, what you said

A lot of people wonder what it'd be like to kill someone, but most aren't so curious as to throw their life away to find out. Not to mention would they kill their own family member in the process.

Re: Andrew Conley (17) strangled his brother to "satisfy a craving" and blamed the death on the Showtime series Dexter

Re: Andrew Conley (17) strangled his brother to "satisfy a craving" and blamed the death on the Showtime series Dexter

Teen described as calm after killing brother
    Associated Press / September 18, 2010

RISING SUN, Ind. — A teenager who strangled his 10-year-old brother joked around the following morning and seemed calm, even eating popcorn, the boys’ mother testified in a video deposition played in court yesterday.

Tweet 0diggsdiggYahoo! Buzz ShareThis Bridget Conley said her older son, Andrew, seemed “fine’’ when she arrived home from her overnight shift at a casino last November.

During taped interviews played earlier, an emotionless Andrew Conley described how he strangled his brother Connor, dragged him to his car, and stuffed him in the trunk.

Andrew Conley, 18, pleaded guilty Monday to murder as his trial was about to begin.

He faces 45 years to life in prison, but cannot be put to death because he was 17 when the killing occurred.

A psychologist testified he was mentally ill, but not legally insane.
