I heard about this on the news yesterday but I didn't know the kid committed suicide. I thought it was pretty asinine that the kid would record his roommate's sexual encounters, whether it be male OR female. It makes me think that this indian kid is gay himself. Why would he be THAT curious about what his roommate was doing?

Wow this story is even on a morning radio show in San Diego. I am glad it is getting so much exposure. Molly and Dharun will never get rid of this, google their names like most employers do and they will find all of this. I am glad. Life will not be easy for them.

This is such a sad story, they actually interviewed a friend/neighbor of the kid who filmed it and he said that he's a good kid and he would have filmed it, EVEN IF IT WERE MALE/FEMALE...
umm... then he'd still be facing a prison sentence for invasion of privacy!!
Hopefully those two will always be haunted by this, I can't see how they couldn't be! Even if it blows over (which I don't see how it could), this will always be in their heads, gnawing away at their sanity.

The death of a first-year university student has stirred outrage and remorse among classmates who said they wished they could have stopped the teen from jumping off a bridge after a secret video of his sexual encounter with a man was streamed online.
Tyler Clementi, 18, jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River last week, a lawyer for his family confirmed.
Police recovered a man's body on Wednesday afternoon just north of the bridge, and authorities were trying to determine whether it was Clementi's.
"Had he been in bed with a woman, this would not have happened," said fellow Rutgers University student Lauren Felton, 21.
"He wouldn't have been outed via an online broadcast, and his privacy would have been respected and he might still have his life."
Clementi was a violinist whose life revolved around music, said Ed Schmiedecke, the recently retired music director at Ridgewood High School, from which Clementi graduated this year.
"He was a terrific musician, and a very promising, hardworking young man," Schmiedecke said.
Clementi's roommate, Dhraun Ravi, and fellow Rutgers freshman Molly Wei, both 18, have been charged with invading Clementi's privacy.
Middlesex County prosecutors say they used a webcam to surreptitiously transmit a live image of Clementi having sex on September 19 and Ravi tried to webcast a second encounter on September 21, the day before Clementi's suicide.
The two could face five years in jail. A lawyer for Ravi did not immediately return a message seeking comment, and it was unclear whether Wei had retained a lawyer.
A spokesman for the Middlesex County prosecutor's office didn't return messages inquiring whether there could be additional charges, and experts diverged on the potential for the pair to face more severe charges in light of Clementi's apparent suicide.
Parry Aftab, who runs the website WiredSafety, said it's possible the classmates could be prosecuted for violating Clementi's civil rights.
"If these kids could get away with one privacy law violation, that would be a sin," she said.
But former assistant Essex County prosecutor Luanne Peterpaul said such a prosecution was unlikely because the federal government doesn't recognise sexual orientation as a protected class.
Peterpaul, vice-chairwoman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, said prosecutors might be able to pursue the case as a hate crime if they could establish that the defendants were motivated to act because they perceived Clementi as gay. But that can be hard to prove, she said.
ABC News and The Star-Ledger of Newark reported Clementi left on his Facebook page on September 22 a note that read: "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry." Later, his Facebook page was accessible only to friends.
About 100 people gathered on Wednesday night for a vigil on campus. They lay on the ground and chanted slogans like, "We're here, we're queer, we're not going home."
Rutgers University president Richard McCormick wrote in a letter to the campus: "If the charges are true, these actions gravely violate the university's standards of decency and humanity."
Coincidentally, the university this week launched Project Civility, designed to get students thinking about how they treat others.

Steven Goldstein, head of Garden State Equality, New Jersey's leading gay rights organization, called on prosecutors Thursday to use the state's hate crimes law in the case against a Rutgers University student accused of using a remote-controlled webcam to stream on the Internet images of his roommate having sex in their dorm room.
Goldstein said Tyler Clementi, 18, who killed himself Sept. 22, was the victim of a hate crime, not a prank that, before the Internet, might have passed unnoticed.
"This student taped and mocked him," Goldstein said, referring to Dharun Ravi, 18, who faces charges of invasion of privacy.
Ravi has not been charged under the state's hate crimes law.

"We understand there has to be an investigation, but if (Clementi) was having sex with a woman, does anyone seriously think there would have been the same reaction?" Goldstein said. "He was mocked because his roommate said (he was having sex with) a male. That's what makes this a hate crime. The invasion of privacy was motivated by sexual prejudice."
He said that based on what's on the Internet and in Twitter feeds attributed to Ravi, "there's already enough evidence. What more do you need?"
Goldstein said the incident was no prank: "What might have been a prank in the 1950s is just not acceptable, no matter what kind of technology is involved. He was targeted."
Clementi family lawyer Paul Mainardi confirmed that Clementi leaped from the George Washington Bridge last week. Police recovered a man's body Wednesday afternoon in the Hudson River just north of the bridge, which connects New York and New Jersey, and authorities were trying to determine whether it was Clementi's.
Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, N.J., and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton are charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for secretly placing a camera in the room and transmitting a sexual encounter on the Internet on Sept. 19, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said.
Ravi faces two additional privacy invasion charges for a second camera incident Sept. 21 involving the same student, Kaplan said.
Wei, who surrendered to police Monday, was released without bail. Ravi, who surrendered to police Tuesday, was released on $25,000 bail.
The investigation into the events leading up to Clementi's death is ongoing, Rutgers spokesman Steve Manas said.
He said he could not confirm whether Clementi sought help from his resident assistant or any other university officials. Although classes are continuing as scheduled, students are concerned, he said.
"The students are upset on a lot of different levels," Manas said. "There's the privacy issue. How could one roommate do this to another? There's the suicide issue."
Counselors are available to deal with student concerns, he said.
"Obviously, it's not business as usual, but we have measures in place, counseling and otherwise, to assist students," he said.
Under New Jersey privacy laws, transmitting images of nudity or sexual contact without the person's consent carries a maximum prison term of five years.
Donna Rice Hughes president of Enough is Enough, a national Internet safety group, called the case "cyberbullying on steroids. It's the worst case I've seen." She said the public still doesn't take the problem seriously enough.
Her organization this year rolled out a curriculum for adults — parents, educators and law enforcers — about the problem, she said, "and they're not flocking to it." The problem: "No one thinks it can happen to them or their family."
In addition to the police investigation into the Clementi case, the university plans to investigate whether the two students violated its code of student conduct.
"If the charges are true, these actions gravely violate the university's standards of decency and humanity," Rutgers University President Richard McCormick said.
McCormick said he did not know Clementi, but "learned that in addition to his academic abilities, he was a gifted musician."
"Our university community feels the pain of his loss, and I know there is anger and outrage about these events," he said.
This month, Rutgers launched a two-year program focusing on "civility in the context of one of the most culturally and racially diverse research universities in the nation," McCormick said.
He asked the students to commit to the "values of civility, dignity, compassion and respect for each other."
News of the arrests and the reported suicide of a student left heavy hearts on campus.
"It was clearly a violation of privacy. Only a sick person would do that," said Moises Pena, a junior.
Daniel Morowitz, 21, a member of the Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Alliance at Rutgers University, said gay students generally feel safe on campus.
"It's pretty welcoming," he said about the university. "There are a lot of resources available to students in any state of the coming out process."
Clementi played violin in the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, said Laurie Granieri, a spokeswoman for the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers. The orchestra will dedicate its Saturday night concert of Beethoven and Berlioz to the memory of Clementi, whose seat will be left empty, she said.

A body fished from the water north of the George Washington Bridge was identified Thursday as Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers freshman who killed himself after his sex life was exposed on the internet.
The 18-year-old New Jersey man was listed as a suicide by drowning, with blunt impact injuries to his torso suffered in his Sept. 22 leap from the span, said the city medical examiner.
The body was recovered a day earlier near the Columbia University boathouse at 218th St., about 30 blocks north of the bridge.

I need to go back and find the comment, but this one post on my local news website said that Dharun often made homophobic remarks against Tyler on his Twitter. I can try to find proof of this, but as of now, it's only a claim from a commenter. It just may not be true. I'm looking more into it.
This is so sad. I just moved from Jersey and lived about 15 minutes from Rutgers. Most of my friends (regardless of if they knew him or not) are devastated by this, it's always hard when things happen so close to home. I hope that the kids do get time for invasion of privacy, regardless if people think they are responsible for Tyler's death or not they still broke the law and invaded his privacy. RIP Tyler.
