Billie Jean James (67), missing 4 mths, found in her home under piles of rubbish

Body of missing woman found under rubbish

    11:30 AEST Sun Aug 29 2010

The body of a woman missing for four months has been found by her husband under piles of clutter in their Las Vegas home.

Billie Jean James disappeared from her Nevada home in April and a massive search of the surrounding desert turned up no signs of the 67-year-old hoarder, the Associated Press reports.

Police searched her home several times but even dogs from a specialist search unit that was used to locate bodies following September 11 and Hurricane Katrina could not find her body amid the piles of clothes, knickknacks and other junk.

Police spokesman Bill Cassell said inside the house there were just small pathways between piles of clutter and the strong odours caused by animals, decomposing garbage and food hindered the search.

"For our dogs so go through that house and not find something should be indicative of the tremendous environmental challenges they faced," Cassell told the AP.

"If there had been any indication that there was a remote possibility that somebody was back underneath that stuff we would have taken the appropriate action."

Her husband Bill James spotted Billie Jean's feet poking out of floor-to-ceiling pile of junk last week after clearing 4.5 tonnes of rubbish from a room and called police.
Clark County Coroner's office said it could take weeks to determine how Mrs James died.

During the large scale search for Mrs James friends and family created a Facebook page to help coordinate efforts and raised US$10,000 for a reward for information.

Mrs James was described as a peace activist who loved hiking and camping as well as the arts.

    w.t.f.

    What a tragic demise.

I just can't believe she was right there the entire time under 4.5 tonnes of rubbish. That's really sad and disturbing.

It is just beyond outrageous when the police dog squad can't even determine whether there is a body under the piles of decomposing food and shit you have collected and stashed in your living room.

How incredibly sad that her husband has to deal with this aftermath on top of losing her.  She was suffering from a disease that ended up killing her just as effectively as stage 4 cancer.  :-(

I wish her husband and family the best.  RIP Billie

That is like the saddest thing ever. Especially this paragraph:

On April 8, 1947, workman Artie Matthews found the body of Langley Collyer just 10 feet from where Homer died. His partially decomposed body was being eaten by rats. A suitcase and three huge bundles of newspapers covered his body. Langley had been crawling through their newspaper tunnel to bring food to his paralyzed brother when one of his own booby traps fell down and crushed him.[5] Homer, blind and paralyzed, starved to death several days later.[5] The stench detected on the street had been emanating from Langley, the younger brother.
I'm assuming something bizarre like this must have happened to this lady, and she was essentially buried alive under 4.5 tonnes worth of junk and rot.

I can't even fathom how you could fit that much crap in your house, let alone tolerate the stench, or its mere presence. When you have to create paths through your living space so you can wade through the useless, random shit you have collected, and sleep upon rotting piles of garbage, that is more than being a little eccentric, that's serious mental illness right there that needs intervention.

I just can't believe she wasn't found for 4 months. You would of thought the police would have perhaps contacted some sort of social welfare organisation after seeing the state of the living conditions when they were making their initial missing person inquiries.

They have Hoarders and Animal Hoarders on tv these days. It's amazing how some people live.

Also desperately sad as it's generally a type of mental illness. Even if people come in and clean everything up the person who has the compulsion tend to do the same thing all over again.

    RIP Billie.

After seeing Hoarders, I am surprised it doesn't happen more often. RIP Billie.
