A Pittsburgh woman is charged in the death of her 1-month-old granddaughter after police said she accidentally sat on the infant while she was supposed to be watching her.

Channel 4 Action News' Ari Hait reported that Elane Springs was ordered Friday to stand trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. A charge of tampering with evidence was dismissed by District Judge Dennis Joyce.

Springs, C, said "no comment" as she left the courtroom after her preliminary hearing.

Assistant District Attorney Ilan Zur declined an interview with Channel 4 Action News, saying only that he was satisfied with the judge's ruling.

Police said Springs was baby-sitting at a home on North Homewood Avenue on Sept. 18, 2008, when she sat on the couch to rest.

When Springs stood up three hours later, she realized that she had been sitting on her granddaughter who was no longer breathing, police said.

"Based on what we know about SIDS, she could have sat down and the child could have already passed and that's why she didn't know," defense attorney Wendy Williams said.

Springs remains free as she awaits formal arraignment on Aug. 31.

PITTSBURGH -- City police said they're investigating the death of a 1-month-old from Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood as a possible homicide.

Tyjahe Springs, of North Homewood Avenue, died Thursday at Children's Hospital, but the Allegheny County medical examiner has not determined the cause yet.

"Homicide investigators are investigating this, along with sex assault, family crisis detectives," Assistant Police Chief Maurita Bryant said.

WTAE's Sheldon Ingram spoke to the infant's grandmother who said she doesn't know how the baby died.

Bryant said police will issue an update on the case Friday afternoon.

FAMILY members are mourning the death of a 15-month-old west Michigan girl who apparently suffocated beneath her grandmother when the woman suffered a seizure and blacked out.

Marley Anne Orsted died last Thursday during a visit to her grandmother's home in Goshen, Indiana.

Her grandmother, whose name was not released by the family, had an epileptic seizure and fell on Marley before regaining consciousness about two hours later, the girl's mother told The Grand Rapids Press for a story today.

Authorities believe Marley suffocated because she was not injured in any other way, Stacey Orsted said.

"We are beside ourselves with shock and grief," Mrs Orsted wrote in a message to The Holland Sentinel.

"Just prior she was playing in her play pool and had a nice lunch."

Mrs Marley and her father, Brad Orsted, made the trip from their west Michigan home in Holland south about 152km to Goshen. The girl was to spend a few days with his mother.

They were alone when the older woman had an epileptic seizure and fell on the girl, Stacey Orsted said. The grandmother regained consciousness about two hours later.

"Grandma wanted to show her off to friends and family," Stacey Orsted said.

"She was just so proud of her."

Her husband's mother had lived with epilepsy for about 30 years and managed it with medication, she said.

The grandmother was recovering, but she was distraught about the child's death, Mrs Orsted said.

Along with her parents, Marley is survived by two half-sisters, Mazzy and Chloe Chase. Services were pending.

I'm gonna echo the sentiment of who the fuck has 1 month old in their care and just decides to take a nap? Wow, I just had my first and how I wish I could just take naps whenever I please. FU lady. And it's not like she was some belaguered parent, exhausted from night-feedings, etc. It was a fucking babysitting job. If she was that tired, she should've declined.

I never saw anyplace where it said she was actually sleeping except the title of the thread. Did I miss that? I suppose it can be assumed since she was there for three hours, but she could have been watching TV or reading or playing online. I don't think it was a 'rolling on her while sleeping' kinda thing. More of a plopping her butt on her and sitting kinda thing. Could have dozed off, but it's not like she laid down 'with' the baby it doesn't sound like.

Where did she think the baby was when she sat down? Where did she think she was for three hours? Wouldn't she have been the one who put her on the couch if she was watching her? Did that slip her mind?

It just doesn't make sense, does it? How could you not feel a baby you're sitting on.

I dont know this is crazy..I mean you dont feel something under you    It said above grandma had seizure but i dont know...There are ALL different kinds of seizures but to sit down for 3 hours.. When i seize i use every muscle in my body and shake....sounds fishy....wonder if she was drunk or on drugs

Woman faces trial in accidental death of granddaughter

A Homewood woman who police say accidently sat on her infant granddaughter, killing her nearly two years ago, was ordered held to trial on charges of child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter.

District Judge Dennis Joyce this morning dismissed charges that Elane Springs, 49, tampered with evidence in the September 2008 death of 1-month-old granddaughter, Tyjahe, whom she was baby-sitting at her home in the 1500 block of North Homewood Avenue.

Detectives said Ms. Springs laid the baby on her couch while she did housework and then sat next to her when she grew tired. Several hours later she got up to use the bathroom and realized she had been sitting on the victim, police said, and the baby was lifeless. Instead of calling 911 Ms. Springs removed the child's clothes and patted her with water in an attempt to revive her.

Her attorney Wendy Williams today said the baby's death could just as likely have been caused by sudden infant death syndrome or something else and that the autopsy reports she reviewed were inconclusive.

"Just because there's a dead body doesn't mean someone is criminally liable," she said. "The sorrow of losing a child is punishment enough for everyone."

PITTSBURGH, July 8 (UPI) -- A Pittsburgh woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter for accidentally sitting on her infant granddaughter and smothering her, court records showed.

Elane Springs, 49, was babysitting the 1-month-old child at her home but allegedly did not call 911 when she realized what had happened, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday.

Springs laid the girl, Tyjahe, on her sofa and later accidentally sat on her, officials allege.

"When she stood up, she realized that she had been sitting on the victim. She failed in her attempts to revive Tyjahe and said she could see that the victim wasn't breathing and was lifeless," police said.

Springs didn't call 911 but tried to revive the baby by patting her with water, police said.

"She left a message on (her son's) answering machine to tell his sister, who is the victim's mother, that the victim was dead," homicide detective James McGee said.

The baby's mother, Springs' daughter
, called 911 when she arrived four hours after the incident, but "by then the child was already dead," said Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki.

The baby died of asphyxiation due to accidental smothering, the medical examiner said.

Springs also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and tampering with evidence, the Post-Gazette reported.

Springs was arraigned Wednesday and remained in jail on $20,000 bond Wednesday night.

I do not believe people can be so unaware of what they are doing with a newborn in their care! I mean seriously, I can see how kids are accidentally killed while co-sleeping with drunk parents, or left in cars, or drown in pools, or even die while hiding somewhere during hide and go seek and find themselves trapped.

But being the caregiver of a newborn should give a person (ESPECIALLY a non-parent) some sense of vigilance that they may not usually posses. SITTING on a crayon disturbs my ass, sitting on a baby is just unfathomable. I understand the grandma killed the infant unintentionally, but PHYSICALLY, I do not understand how you can sit on anything bigger than a pill or coin and not notice.

I'm going to guess that there was a lot of stuff piled on the couch and grandma didn't feel the kid because she thought she was sitting on clothes or whatever was piled all over. Just a guess.

Before my daughter died of sids,  I have always been against sleeping with your infant.  Although if you do it and your kids are fine, power to you.  I may not have felt this way if she didn't die.            This gma, clearly sat on this baby, IMO, on purpose,  how do you not know?????  I mean really??

I am so sorry about your daughter, I only asked because I know sids is not isolated to co-sleeping.
