Jodi Henrickson, 17, missing since June 20th, 2009

No answers in mysterious Bowen Island disappearance of Jodi Henrickson

    By Laura StoneAugust 27, 2009
She’s in the dreams, thoughts and prayers of family and friends — her whereabouts a mystery that has puzzled police and alarmed a small community. Since Jodi Henrickson went missing on Bowen Island on June 20, theories and rumours have abounded as to her disappearance.

But for now, a simple, pressing question continues to plague those who know and love the 17-year-old Squamish teen. What happened to Henrickson?

“The family is very upset by all of this. We just need to find answers, that’s all,” said the girl’s aunt, Ina Henrickson. “We need to find Jodi.”

Henrickson was last seen on Miller Road after leaving a Bowen house party, according to her ex-boyfriend, Gavin Arnott. Arnott, 20, who was given a conditional discharge for assaulting Henrickson during what he called a mutual fight, told The Province he was later questioned by police. He has denied any role in her disappearance.

Henrickson was reported missing June 24. An extensive search of the island, which for two days involved 30 people in search-and-rescue crews from North Shore, Lions Bay, and Coquitlam, failed to find the missing girl. Both water and dog searches have also been performed.

On Aug. 1, Henrickson’s parents, Nancy and Bob Henrickson, travelled to Bowen and gave a press conference, asking for the public’s help in finding their daughter. They remained hopeful that Henrickson was still alive on the island of about 3,000 people, possibly being held against her will. A week later, there was another search of both new and retraced areas, reportedly by cadaver-trained dogs. That, too, was unsuccessful. Police have also looked in other locations off Bowen, but will not specify where.

Meanwhile, the focus remains on the island.

“Anything we found hasn’t lead us to anything other than Bowen Island,” said Squamish RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Previously, there’s been talk that Jodi ran away, possibly to Alberta; that she was abducted or hitchhiked off Bowen; that she met foul play. Video surveillance of ferry footage failed to confirm one theory that Henrickson left by car. But that’s not definitive, said Ritchie. A glare on the windshield, a fuzzy image, an inconvenient angle — all could have hidden Jodi from the camera’s view.

“To say 100 per cent that she didn’t leave on the ferry, we can’t say that,” said Ritchie.

Police are treating the 2009 disappearance of a 17-year-old girl on Bowen Island as a homicide.

Jodi Henrickson went missing early on June 20, between 4 and 6:30 a.m., after leaving a house party. She was on the island for the weekend to visit friends.

Ex-boyfriend Gavin Arnott said he walked with Henrickson along Miller Road at around 5:30 a.m. They had a tense conversation, he said, and he walked away, leaving her on the road.

Henrickson wasn't reported missing until June 24 by her family, who didn't expect her home in Squamish until then.

Henrickson would have turned 18 on Feb. 23.

Sea-to-Sky Regional Police Service and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team have been extensively investigating the case since Henrickson went missing, but will renew their inquiries on Bowen Island during the next few weeks.

Police believe that she was a victim of foul play. Although there have been numerous tips and possible sightings of Henrickson, all have proven to be unfounded.

Investigators don't think Jodi ran away or that she made it off the island on her own accord. Her disappearance has been classified as a homicide.

Anyone with information should contact the General Investigation Section at Squamish RCMP detachment 604-892-6100. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Re: Jodi Henrickson, 17, missing since June 20th, 2009

    Another article about the lack of co-operation from other teens who were at the party;

Jodi Henrickson Missing: Teen Wall of Silence Plagues Police
The 17-year old Squamish girl went missing June 20, 2009 from Bowen Island where she had gone to visit “friends.”  Her family reported her missing on June 24, 2009 when she did not return home from Bowen Island as planned. Prior to that Jodi’s family had no idea anything was wrong.

I put the words “friends” in quotation marks because through my adult eyes I question what kind of people would do nothing about another person’s absence for four whole days.  If Jodi Henrickson were indeed with friends shouldn’t they have noticed when she just disappeared... for four days?  Shouldn’t they have looked for her, called her family, called police?

Why did it take four days for anybody on Bowen Island to report Jodi Henrickson missing? Could the fact that Bowen Island is the home of Jodi’s ex-boyfriend Gavin Arnott,  an ex who was subject to a restraining order after being found guilty of assaulting her, have anything to do with the wall of silence?  Police have openly stated that they are having trouble getting Bowen Island teens to cooperate with the investigation... why?

The ex-boyfriend of 17-year-old Jodi Henrickson, missing for 10 days, was ordered by the court to stay away from her as part of his probation after he was convicted of assaulting her.

According to court documents, 20-year-old Gavin Arnott was convicted of assaulting Henrickson on April 8.

Arnott, a Bowen Island resident, was sentenced June 5 to 18 months probation, and one of the conditions was that he have no contact with Henrickson.

Henrickson, a Squamish resident, was last seen around dawn on Bowen Island after attending several house parties on June 20.

RCMP confirmed Arnott was at one of those parties but would not go into details about their interaction.

From what police have been able to gather Jodi was last seen on June 20, 2009 after party hopping on Bowen Island.  Gavin Arnott was at one of the parties and despite the restraining order against him there was some interaction between the pair.  Police have not commented on the nature of that interaction, they have only confirmed that the two were seen together.

The last known description of Jodi Henrickson was offered by police after she was reported missing, and friends have started a Facebook Group in her honor.  Ironically, Gavin Arnott is a member of that group.

By all reports there is no chance that Jodi Henrickson ran away. Police have confirmed that they have no reason to believe Jodi ever left Bowen Island.  Some residents have cooperated with investigators and many of the homes that hosted parties have been opened to investigators.  The wall of silence is not coming from the adults on Bowen Island; it is coming from the teens.

The Bowen teens are apparently harboring ill feelings over police actions in breaking up a party three weeks ago and are unwilling to talk.  The immaturity that is keeping these kids from talking is nothing short of criminal; anybody who knows anything about Jodi has no good excuse not to talk, no matter how much police annoyed them in the past.

Getting teenagers from the party to come forward could prove difficult, said local pub owner Scott Witty, explaining that another house party that was broken up by the RCMP three weeks ago led to some hard feelings. "There's a lot of mistrust between the kids and the RCMP," he said.

Re: Jodi Henrickson, 17, missing since June 20th, 2009

Thanks, I did watch the video, but then forgot to include it in the post.

I also want to add that apparently her ex-boyfriend has refused to take a polygraph test, though he's been asked multiple times.  I have yet to find an actual article or other official source that states or confirms that, even though I have read that he did in more than one place, and that apparently it is her family who has stated that he refused it.

Last person to see her, apparently they were arguing at the time, his friends said he was drunk and out of control that night, and he was previously charged with assaulting her, and wasn't supposed to be in contact with her at all?  Suspicious enough on it's own, but coupled with the fact that he refuses a polygraph, it looks even more likely that he has something to do with her disappearance.  I'm just surprised that considering it is supposed to be quite a small area, they haven't found a body or anything.

Re: Jodi Henrickson, 17, missing since June 20th, 2009

Investigators are processing several bags worth of material gathered Saturday (July 17) after volunteers, police, and search and rescue workers combed the Bowen Island locale believed to be the last place missing Squamish teen Jodi Henrickson was seen more than one year ago.

It’s unclear whether progress was made during the search of the Seven Hills area, which is off a main road and characterized by underbrush and vegetation about 30 feet from an embankment leading to water.

“The investigators are still going strong at it, but I don’t know if they feel they’ve made headway or not,” said Cpl. Dave Ritchie, who took part in the search.

Sea to Sky General Investigation Section personnel collected the material found at the scene and transported it to Squamish for dissemination. Police are soliciting expert investigators to go over the material, according to Ritchie.

“There’s lots of stuff found and I don’t know how much, if any, will be linked to Jodi, but that’s what we’re trying to do,” he said.

Auxiliary officers from Squamish and Bowen Island joined a large group of volunteers from Bowen Island for the search, which was co-ordinated by North Shore Search and Rescue and RCMP.

“The search went quite into the afternoon and they didn’t get as far as they want exactly, so they’ll probably do more,” said Ritchie, adding there’s been no date scheduled for a second search.

On June 20, 2009, then-17-year-old Henrickson was last seen at the location by ex-boyfriend Gavin Arnott after the arguing pair left a house party together.

RCMP stated investigators don’t believe Henrickson left the island, and in March 2010, RCMP declared the case a homicide.

Anyone with information is asked to call Squamish RCMP at 604 892-6100, or anonymously at Crimestoppers, 1 800-222-TIPS.

Missing B.C. teen's ex charged with sex offences
    ctvbc.ca
    Published Tuesday, May 10, 2011 8:27PM PDT
A young man who was the last person to see a missing B.C. teenager alive has been charged with sex offences against another girl.
Bowen Island resident Gavin Arnott, 22, is charged with sexual interference and possession of child pornography for allegedly keeping illicit photographs of a 14-year-old on a cell phone and computer. He was arrested two weeks ago after allegedly threatening her.
Arnott is a person of interest in the suspicious disappearance of his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Henrickson, who was last seen at a house party on Bowen Island on June 20, 2009. Police are treating Henrickson's case as a homicide, and believe that her body is buried somewhere on the island.
The 17-year-old Squamish girl had spoken to her parents the day before she disappeared, telling them that she was going camping for the weekend.
Arnott told CTV News in 2009 that he last saw Henrickson on the side of a road after the party. He said that they had an argument and she walked off, never to be seen again.
At the time of Henrickson's disappearance, police said they were aware of her troubled relationship with Arnott. Just a few months before she disappeared, Henrickson called police to make an assault complaint against him, and he later pleaded guilty to the charge in court.
Arnott has been interrogated by police, who have also searched his father's Bowen Island property, but he has denied any involvement in Henrickson's disappearance.
Simon Fraser University criminologist Neil Boyd has studied the case and says it's unlikely that charges will be laid in Henrickson's suspected murder until her body is found.
"Any case in which it's alleged that there is a homicide and you don't have a body, that's difficult. It's difficult to get an arrest; it's difficult to get a conviction," he told CTV News.
"One can only infer in the case of Jody Henrickson that police and prosecutors do not believe that at this time they have a sufficient evidence to go forward."
Arnott is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on the sexual interference and child pornography charges. He has been ordered to stay away from minors and is forbidden from possessing digital photography equipment.

Missing teen's ex arrested for breach of conditions
    ctvbc.ca
    Published Saturday, February 11, 2012 6:50PM PST
Gavin Arnott, a person of interest in the disappearance of B.C. teenager Jodi Henrickson two years ago, is in jail after breaching bail conditions on unrelated charges.
This past week 23-year-old Arnott was arrested near his home in Black Creek on Vancouver Island where he lives with his mother.
Court documents accuse him of contacting a 14-year-old girl who he allegedly had sex with. He had been charged with sexual interference and child pornography for allegedly keeping illicit photographs of the girl. The age of consent in Canada is 16.
This is the second time the young man has allegedly violated his bail conditions.
Arnott came into the media spotlight after Henrickson, his former girlfriend, vanished early in the morning of June 20, 2009 after going to a house party on Bowen Island. He was convicted of assaulting her before she went missing and was the last person to see the 17-year-old alive.
In 2009, Arnott told CTV News Henrickson walked off after they had an argument.
Despite an exhaustive search, investigators have found no sign of Henrickson. Police believe her body was buried somewhere on Bowen Island. To date, there have been no arrests linked to her case.
Arnott is being held in custody. His trial on the pornography and sexual interference charges is scheduled for later this month.
In 2011, the 23-year-old was accused of threatening another girlfriend.

Police seek fresh information in missing teen Jodi Henrickson
It has been three long years for the family, friends and police officers seeking closure in the suspicious disappearance of 17-year-old Jodi Henrickson from a Bowen Island house party.
To mark the June 20, 2009 anniversary, police and Crime Stoppers are launching a renewed poster and online campaign to ask for public assistance in solving the case.
“Three years of not knowing where your loved one is or what has happened to them is too much for anyone to endure,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team in a statement.
“It's time for people who have information on Jodi Henrickson's whereabouts to come forward. The family deserves it. Jodi deserves it,” she said.Henrickson arrived on Bowen on June 19, 2009 and planned to spend the weekend camping with friends. When she didn't return home to Squamish four days later, Henrickson's family contacted police and a missing person investigation was launched.
IHIT took over the case in December 2010 after several extensive searches by North Shore Rescue, RCMP air and marine services and police dog services failed to turn up any evidence across Bowen Island. Police maintain Henrickson's disappearance is suspicious and that foul play is suspected.
Henrickson was last seen on the morning of June 20, 2009 around 6 a.m. wearing a black leather jacket, black long sleeve shirt, and blue jeans.
Anyone with information is urged to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
July 3, 2009: Girlfriend was trouble, mom says; Lynne Fedorick said she banned 'manipulative' girl from her home

    Snipped **
"That's something that she would have done, knowing her character," said Lynne Fedorick, mother of Jodi's ex-boyfriend, Gavin Arnott.

Arnott, 20, believes he was the last person to see 17-year-old Jodi before she vanished from Bowen Island on June 20. He admits he was on probation for assaulting her and violated a court order forbidding him to see her.

He denies any role in her disappearance.

"She did run away last winter when she stayed with me for three months," Fedorick told The Province.

"She has been regularly staying out all night since she was 15 years old. She doesn't come home on a regular basis. She fights with her parents, just like any other 15-year-old.

"I'm not saying that they're bad parents. It's just that's the way teenage girls are." Fedorick said she eventually banned Jodi, whom she called a "scheming and manipulative" girl, from her home.

"I really tried to like her. I just found I couldn't do that." Squamish RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie said yesterday that further ground searches have been suspended, but could resume at any time.

"Our search [Wednesday] has concluded and we didn't get any stuff of interest out of it.

"We are actively investigating her disappearance and any tips we get on her," he said. "We're looking at foul play, runaway, medical issues, accident, distress, anything. We're looking at it all." He said investigators have searched off Bowen, but would not specify where.

On Tuesday, Jodi's brother Rob told The Province: "She's really close [with her family], which is what made it so weird that she hasn't gotten in contact with anyone." Fedorick said Jodi was a bad influence on her son, an avid biker who won the Test of Metal cross-country mountain bike race four times before he met her.

"He stopped riding his bike and he started staying out at night and, for the first time ever, not calling me and telling me where he was," she said. "This girl has been trouble with a capital T from the very beginning." She said that Jodi could have met the wrong person after her son walked away from her during a discussion on Bowen's Miller Road at around 5:30 a.m. the day she disappeared. But more likely she took off, said Fedorick, possibly to Alberta.

In a written statement yesterday, Jodi's family wrote: "We have chosen not to comment on questions that only fuel already tense relationships. Throwing blows at Jodi's ex-boyfriend and his family isn't going to bring Jodi home any faster: It just increases the already raw and heightened emotions that everyone that cares about Jodi are all feeling at this time." They did not address questions about her running away.

To mark the two weeks since she disappeared, her family is holding a rally today at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Fedorick said she hopes the girl will be found.

"She's probably hiding out because she's probably totally embarrassed by all the media attention," she said.http://www.theprovince.com/touch/story.html?id=6662337
