    A curious journalist...

    Hello there,

I'm a journalist from Ireland writing a story about what happens to a person's online presence when they die. I came across this site sometime last year and, like you lot, spent hours going through the profiles of the people listed here. Anyway, I'll be including this place in my article.

I have a few questions for anyone who has a spare minute and I might use answers in the piece. I'll also forward it to Mike for inclusion in the media section.

    Right. The questions.

Why do you visit this site? What is it you get from it?

Have any of you taken steps to have your online lives (myspace profiles, youtube accounts, blogs etc) cleaned up in the event that you die? I.e Told a friend or family member to go online and inform people of your death, remove them, given them your passwords etc. Would there be people who you only know online (friends from this forum for example) who might not find out about your death? Would that bother you? Should people who spend a lot of time online come up with a list of online friends who should be informed if they die?

What do you say to the people who think this site is "wrong" or "sick" etc etc?

Would any of you, honestly, mind if one of your own family members was featured on the site? Do you understand when family members react badly?

What do you think about the phenomenon of profiles becoming online shrines? Do you think it helps with the grieving process?

What other sites do you regularly visit?

Thanks very much in advance to anyone who answers.

    All the best,

    Barry.

those were my initial thoughts. I have neither the patience nor the interest to do it for him. I was trying to be nice yet sneaky and have someone else do it.

Ah, yeah. But I'm way, way too lazy to go trawling through thousands of posts. And I sort of wanted to get original answers to the questions. See if anything of interest cropped up.

But, yeah, even if you only answered a couple. Doesn't matter. I can write around it. And Mike's been very helpful.

And, don't worry, I'm well used to being ignored...

I oomped him up one.  He was too polite to be receiving bad karma..

Hopefully someone will hook him up with some answers.  I'm too lazy to answer in detail.  I will say that I wouldn't mind being up here (wouldn't care, obviously, if I were dead...), I wouldn't mind if a family member were up here.  I know of a couple people who are on here, and it's interesting to see how other people perceive their "lives" according to just their myspace pages...

    That is all.  :2eyesbleed:

    Because I like it.  Happiness.

Yes my family knows to submit my death to MDS and no I have not changed my MySpace "just in case".

What I say to those people depends on what they say.  Nothing cookie cutter here.

I will be the one submitting my family members so no, I will not mind.  Yes I understand that people lash out when in pain and sometimes it's warranted here, most times not.

I think since there are online communities then online shrines are needed.  Otherwise how would people know why a cyber friend suddenly stopped communicating with them?

The last question is a bit too personal.  It's none of your business.

There, now you haven't been ignored, better?  Now quit whining or you're getting the pony pic.

    Hello there,

    I'm a journalist from Ireland

    The Irish are sexxxxxxy

    Right. The questions.

Why do you visit this site? What is it you get from it?

I started visiting, because I was grieving for a murdered friend. Now, I am just used to the place and It is interesting and humbling to see how young (and older) people die. It is amazing how many kids die from just doing something stupid. Sad for their families.

I have not taken any real precautions. My real myspace is private because I do not want my employer looking at me.  I am quit4e sure if I died someone from here would find out and it the thread would say. "452nd MDS member to die." and the replies would be "this is getting old."
As for a list of friends to tell, nah. If you do not know me in real life. I really doubt you would care.

What do you say to the people who think this site is "wrong" or "sick" etc etc?

I don't feel the need to explain. I simply tell them "you just do not get it, so move on and leave me alone."

Would any of you, honestly, mind if one of your own family members was featured on the site? Do you understand when family members react badly?

I would not like to see my brothers here and talked poorly about. I know they are good people and if some one speculated and bashed them. It would bother me. I understand why SOME of the families come on here and react badly. I do not understand when the discussion is civil and not bashing.

What do you think about the phenomenon of profiles becoming online shrines? Do you think it helps with the grieving process?

It is interesting display of the times we live in. I do think it helps the grieving. A place to "talk to the dead" and grieve with others. But if it goes on too long.........

What other sites do you regularly visit?

    Nothing related to this one.

Thanks very much in advance to anyone who answers.

    Your welcome haha
