Diane Nguyen Robbins, missing since June 1985

I went to a conference today, and one of the speakers told a story about his sister who went missing and has never been found.

In the early 1970's the speaker was 5 years old and lived with his mother in Vietnam.  His mother married a US serviceman and they moved to the states - to California and eventually to Washington state.  Shortly thereafter his mom & stepdad had another child, his younger half-sister Diane.

The speaker's stepdad allegedly molested Diane, and when she was 13 she ran away with an older friend named Molly Purdin.  About a month after she disappeared, the speaker's mother got a call from police in Washington state saying that Molly Purdin had been found raped & bludgeoned to death, but there was no sign of Diane.

This was around the time of the Green River Killer in Seattle.  Other teen girls also went missing in the same area around that time, and have not been found.

What's even sadder is that the speaker's mother fell into a deep depression (who wouldn't be depressed after leaving your entire family in your home country, your husband molesting your child, and never seeing that child again).  About a week after the speaker married his college sweetheart, his mother hanged herself in her shower.  She brought him to the US to have a better life, and while it was better in some ways than the Vietnam they left, this country was certainly not hospitable to her.

It was such a tragic story. I hope he is someday able to get closure regarding his sister's disappearance.

Here's a video of the speaker I saw, Dr. Steven Robbins.  It's him telling the story of his mother and half-sister, which inspired him to his life's work of Diversity.  Heartbreaking.
