RIALTO-- A woman has been arrested after she allegedly shot and killed her sister-in-law and drove around for hours with the victim's body inside the car.

At around 12:46 a.m. Sunday, Rialto police received a call from a woman in Washington State reporting that her sister, Sandra Kotz, 48, of Upland, had called her and said she had shot their sister-in-law, Ellen Bayless, 58, of Yucaipa, according to Lieutenant Joe Cirilo of the Rialto Police Department.

The woman told police that Kotz had driven around with Bayless' body in the car for hours, and was possibly headed to a residence in Rialto.

After an extensive search, police found Kotz sitting on a sidewalk in the 500 block of South Joyce Ave. She had a handgun inside her purse, according to police.

Bayless' body was then found inside a white Dodge Neon abandoned in a nearby field. Investigators say the car had been doused with an accelerant.

Bayless had suffered a gunshot wound to her upper torso, police said.

Kotz was arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center where she was being charged for murder, Cirilo said.

The motive for the shooting and location of occurrence are not known. Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding this investigation to please contact Detective Paul Stella at (909) 265-8369 or (909) 820-2550.

Bayless' daughter told KTLA that her mother was letting Kotz stay with her because she was homeless. Kotz is the ex-wife of Bayless' brother.

Woman Pleads Not Guilty To Killing Sister-In-Law

A homeless woman has pleaded not guilty to the shooting death of her sister-in-law, then driving around Southern California for hours with the body slumped in the victim's car.

Sandra Lee Kotz entered the first-degree murder plea Tuesday in the killing of 58-year-old Ellen Ann Bayless. The 48-year-old woman is jailed without bail.

Investigators say Kotz killed Bayless sometime Saturday and drove the victim's 2005 Dodge Neon for more than 10 hours before Rialto police found the armed woman early Sunday.

Police say Bayless had been trying to help the homeless woman get on her feet and they got into an argument.

It's still unclear where Bayless, who is divorced from Kotz's brother, was killed.
