Seems so silly to pay big money for a box you're going to bury and (probably) never dig up again. Anyone I plan a funeral for is getting cardboard.
Yes you can. Families can provide their own casket or container. At a local mortuary, one family provided a refrigerator cardboard box for a cremation. Another family built and provided a "casket" (actual wooden box) for a burial.

Are there rules I must follow? How does one go about making their own cometary?

    That's so awesome.

They totally should of buried Carl Williams in a refrigerator cardboard box they found at the back of Woolworths.

... or one like this for the lulz:
That may vary between states. In the state of florida there are strict rules. All cemeties must be registered & licensed after meeting all the requirements, such as the property can not be smaller than 13 acres, must have a monetary percentage in a surety bond for all developed land and have a Prepetual Care trust set up. There is a lot more smaller requirements.

Just a side note, it's against the law in Florida to bury your pets in the yard.

In the whole state? Like even if you live out in the country you can't bury your pet? I never gave it a thought that it might be illegal. I just keep burying them.  :-D

There is a guy not far from here who made a little cemetery on his farm. He and his mother are the only ones in it. I don't know what the rules are here but it's not 13 acres for sure, unless there is a bigger area that is always going to stay with the cemetery part separate from the farm when it is sold.
