May 9--Fred Johnson offered Patrick Selepak an easier way out -- a chance to end his bloody run with only two killings on his hands -- by surrendering to a traffic cop parked just down the road from his home.
"What are you thinking?" Selepak said he asked the man who had befriended him, giving him a place to stay while on the lam. "With killing, there's no going easier. There's only one sentence -- the rest of your life in prison."
And then, when Johnson tried to flee, Selepak shot him twice and choked him to death.
On Monday, the day before he planned to plead guilty in Genesee County Circuit Court to first-degree murder in Johnson's Feb. 21 slaying, Selepak spoke to the Free Press in his first media interview about the deadly spree that took the lives of Johnson and a New Baltimore couple.
"I want to apologize to everybody whose life I contacted," he said by phone from the Genesee County Jail. "There's no excuse for the things I did. I want to own up and plead guilty."
Law enforcement officials said Selepak's story, told by an ex-con described as a skillful manipulator and smooth liar, is a slick mix of fabrications and self-serving justifications, held together with a minimum of fact.
