A yoga guru whose socialite ex-wife allegedly killed their eight-year-old autistic son before trying to kill herself in a luxury Manhattan hotel says he cannot understand what prompted her to do it.
"She was not a killer," Emil Tzekov said of his former wife of five years, multimillionaire pharmaceutical executive Gigi Jordan.
"I would love to talk to her to have her explain the reason ... I cannot understand," he told the New York Daily News.
Belgian-born Ms Jordan, 49, was in hospital yesterday, recovering from the alleged murder-suicide attempt.
Police say she checked into the $US2300-a-night ($2600) Peninsula Hotel, just off Fifth Avenue, on Friday.
She allegedly fed her son, Jude Michael Mirra, a fatal dose of prescription medication, then tried to kill herself.
A relative called police on Saturday after receiving an alarming email from Ms Jordan, The New York Times reported.
Police arrived to find Ms Jordan sitting on the floor, "babbling incoherently" next to her lifeless son, who was lying on the bed.
Investigators also allegedly found a two-page suicide note, in which Ms Jordan wrote that her computer contained an explanation of her actions.
She also made reference to child pornography and allegations her son had been abused.
But Ms Jordan's ex-husband said he could not fathom why the tragedy occurred.
"She dedicated her life to him, all of it," Mr Tzekov said.
"All she had was Jude, and the idea she tried to kill him is shocking."
Ms Jordon stopped working and socialising following Jude's birth in 2001, Mr Tzekov said.
"We had no nannies," he said. "She could afford them, but she wanted to do everything herself.
"She made sure all his food was perfect, that he was sleeping so many hours. Everything.
"She left her work, her partnerships, her social life," he added.
"She used to go to business dinners and go shopping. But she stopped all that to take care of Jude."
Ms Jordan allegedly cut off all contact with Mr Tzekov after their marriage broke down.
He said he last saw their son in early 2007, when Jude went to hospital for an operation.
"He was in pain," Mr Tzekov, who now lives in California, said.
"She maybe saw her son dying. Maybe not physically dying, but he was living with pain."
The boy's surname, Mirra, is taken from another of Ms Jordan's ex-husbands, Raymond Mirra jnr, The New York Times reported.
Mr Mirra, an investor in the pharmaceutical industry who was married to Ms Jordan from 1998 to 2001, "knew and cared for the kid", his lawyer said.
"He's terribly saddened by the news," the lawyer said.
Ms Jordan and Mr Tzekov married soon after her divorce from Mr Mirra.
Mr Tzekov, who hired a private investigator to try to find his ex-wife and son, said he would go back to New York for his son's funeral.
"I have to find out why she did this. I don't understand how she could go to that place," he said.

A New York socialite charged with murdering her eight-year-old autistic son believed the boy was being abused by a devil-worshipping cult, a detective says.

A possible suicide note totalling 20 pages was found in amongst papers strewn across the room, the New York Post reported.
In it, Ms Jordan said she thought the mob was after her, the Post said.
As rumours swirled about what drove the formerly gregarious, glamorous, self-made woman to allegedly kill her small son, a Wyoming detective told CBS News that police had briefly put the boy in protective custody two years ago after questioning Ms Jordan's mental health.
Detective Tom Hood told the network he was tasked to investigate her allegations that devil worshippers had been violently and sexually abusing then-six-year-old Jude.
Mr Hood said he it was apparent the 49-year-old was unwell and her statements were outlandish.
He said he asked Ms Jordan whether she had ever seen the cult and she replied, "It was happening and people were following her and him".
She also said Jude, who did not speak, typed on a computer to communicate the abuse.
Mr Hood said Jude did not have the motor skills to type, which prompted Ms Jordan to say she would put her hands on top of her son's and help him.
A police examination of the boy found no signs of abuse but he was put into temporary protective custody and Ms Jordan was given a psychiatric evaluation.
A court eventually reunited her with Jude.
The boy's father, California-based yoga guru Emil Tzekov, said he could not fathom his ex-wife's actions, saying she loved Jude and "gave up everything" to care for him.
