I do live in a very small town; Natick Massachusetts.
Our fire dept. has alot of free time. One of their most common calls used to be from this old man who claimed a UFO  'parked' on his lawn.

I know for sure other areas have different guidelines but around here... That's pretty much the most action you can get.

Scumbag, stop stalking me through the interwebs.

Our local FD gets called for cats in trees all the time. They actually go, but have to leave if a real emergency pops up.

What kind of moron calls the fire department for a cat in a tree, anyway? I've never seen a cat that couldn't get itself out of a tree.

The same morons that call 9-1-1 for stubbed toes, toothaches, broken fingernails, broken sprinkler heads, babies that don't cry, babies that cry too much and because they can't find anyone to drive them to their doctors appointments.

An infamous family story. My dad claims the fire department once responded in disgust to a cat in a tree call. The fireman told my crying older sister, "Look, it'll get down. You don't see a lot of cat skeletons in trees, do you?"

Re: Andrea Benua (34) died after she fell through ice while trying to save dogs

I live in a neighbourhood with a lot of dogs. When i walk my dog i never let her of her leash. I want to be in control so i can make sure she is safe. She loves water to much...so i'm not going to take the risk of her plunging in in the middle of winter. I mean i love my dog to death, but if she is dumb enough to bark at a plastic bag rolling over the street thinking it's an enemy...well then i ain't trusting she is smart enough not to jump in ice cold water.

I get very irritated with unleashed dogs as well. Sara, my dog, is very umm submissive (is that the right word?) so whenever another dog comes up to her she goes flat on the ground and i have to pull really hard to drag her with me. And when the other dog is unleashed and walks after us....Sara will stay flat on the ground and i just can't carry on. I hate that so fucking much. And whenever i ask if people could maybe keep their dog with them so i can carry on as normal...they always react as if i am asking them to fuck their dogs in the ass   A little while ago Sara was attacked by another dog. I had her on the leash, that dog was running loose. Scared the shit out of me. She wouldn't harm a fly and there she was under this big ass dog crying. When the owner came up i already managed to drag that dog from her. Do you think i got an apologie? nah...i got nothing. So few days later i'm walking her again and i see that same dog...running loose. But this time there is a woman with the dog. So i ask her politly if she could keep her dog leashed because he attacked my dog few days ago. Then she said: 'Oh that just couldn't have happened, my dog is very friendly, it must be your dogs fault'. God that made me so pissed. So now i am at the point that whenever that freakin dog so much as growls at my dog..i will kick his ass to heaven. And that pisses me off even more because it's not that dogs fault, it's the owners fault. But i will not let my dog get attacked again.

Oh gosh, i think i kinda needed that of my chest, sorry for the long ramble

I don't really know my take on this story. I can understand that she went in to save her dogs, but i can also see the other point. I have had dogs dying on me and although i was heartbroken at the moment, i also know that that feeling went away quicker then i had expected. But i must add to that that Sara is the first dog that is really mine (As in i am the only one that takes care of her). I really don't know how i will react if she dies.

I feel very sorry for the husband. must be a very hard thing to deal with.

    RIP Andrea and dogs.

Same thing with FWFD. They might, if they don't have other calls and feel like it.

Not everywhere is huge like NY though, we have mini stations all over the city, and they train for this sort of thing. They had a spot on the news last night with the fire and coast guard guys and gals training in that god awful cold water cos nutters go out on the bay to go ice fishing and have to be rescued almost daily, so it's all in a days work in the Great Lake State to save a dog (I don't see a cat going near the water Ron lol)  Then again there's that rare ass cat that wants to swim in icy cold water ;)

There is Ron with the sense.

I think when I first joined this forum we bonded over an article about another broad that died trying to save her dog.  Memories.

I'm also not just saying this because I dislike dogs (which I do and nothing will change it because one of those bitches sent me to the hospital) but because
Me > Animal.  Awful, I know.

Re: Andrea Benua (34) died after she fell through ice while trying to save dogs

Anyone ever seen the videos of people trying to save dogs from icy waters? There are a few of them out there, and I know of at least one where they did actually save the dog, even after its head went under. But I believe this was done by a rescue crew with a boat, ropes, and cold water suits. Wasn't just done haphazardly by some lady minus a cell and a set of keys.

I think everyone is missing the point where she wasn't really sitting down and writing a list of pros and cons and consulting her star charts before she went in to save the dogs. It was her instinct to save them because she loved them.

But if a situation looks TOTALLY BAD why would you do it? It's not a matter of saving someting, it's like "I wanna die too!" in my opinion.

No pro and con needs to be weighed if I see you jump out of a window; cause if I jump out after you to save you it's just me killing myself too. Some situations are best avoided, and walking on cracked ice is one of them. You don't read articles like this when people realize the dog is done for and say "fuck it" though.

Its true. A couple nights ago a boy took me to a "haunted lighthouse" by the ocean. i had Sue on a leash and she was antsy from the car ride so i was walking her around in the dark. Then he yelled "wait! stop!" i had no idea why and he pointed out that two feet in front of me was a 150 foot cliff that drops straight into the ocean where the waves break. If Sue wasnt on a leash she could have lost her footing on the edge and i know for a fact my dumb ass would have the initial reaction of leaping for her if she slipped, probably taking both of us down.

No one would do anything ever if every decision was made following a bunch of hand wringing and shifting around and 'oh boys'. Some people are very instinctive, spontaneous people. I know I am. I don't like to think things through because I'm very analytical and I'll talk myself out of it or miss an opportunity. I throw myself into shit.

If everyone did think it over first, the world would burn down and nothing new would ever happen and we'd have no airplanes or boats or wheels or medicine.

What? Now you're talking crazy. Walking out on cracked ice to save a stupid animal isn't the same as trying to find an AIDS vaccine.

You say instinctive and spontaneous, I say stupid. Ask anyone who actually keeps a level head during emergencies, they don't just jump in head first without a plan. Unless they know what to do so well that it is actually instinct for them. A housewife isn't the person who should be making those calls.

It's not even a bunch of hand wringing that needs to be involved for decisions like this. It's saying "that's a bad idea. fuck it!" The decision doesn't take much thought, my point is that she didn't think...at....all.

Now you see my point!
In my opinion, that's basically what this chick did, and there are people that high five this foolishness!

And the juice ain't worth the squeeze.
Hmmm, I could go out on that ice and best case I come out of the water with mild hypothermia and my dog, worse case I could die.
It's not even a coin flip in my opinion. :-P

Ron we must find something new to argue about because this one is just making me   now. We're doing it rong.

I also just realized that when partyguy was talking about the thread title needing changed and I was making fun of him he was directing that to me since I started the thread.

So now that I know it's my thread, Ron you agree with me or I'll lock it, you tranny.

How do you think anyone figured out anything? By acting on impulse and ignoring danger. You either think that way or you don't. As they say, lead, follow, or get the fuck out of the way. Get the fuck out of the way, Ron. She was acting on instinct, not standing around and making a long list of pros and cons. /fin argument.

If your strength and will is great enough, even if immersed in freezing water, you could pull yourself back up onto the surface of the ice, push off the ground (if it wasn't too deep), or break through the ice until you get back to shore.

I've been in frozen water before and it's not as bad as people make it out. You'd think by the way people describe it that you lose all control of your body right away. Yes, it's shockingly cold, but you still have time to take action to get out before your body shuts down. But if you spend that time trying to save something else, you won't have the strength needed to save yourself when the time quickly approaches to do so.

Sorry, you're wrong, I'm an EMT and people like you (stupid) are usually the one's crying for the ambulance. Being immersed in freezing water IS as bad as people say.
