It's finally cooled down here in Ohio. It's suppose to be in the 90's tomorrow and down to the 70's in the evening. I'm thankful for this "cool down" because the county fair starts tomorrow and we provide fire service for all the grandstand events, which includes wearing turn out gear the whole time.

omg you poor thing. Thankfully it has cooled down a bit because doesn't your gear not only add pounds but heat?

I can't complain too much. I chose the job I don't mind sweating 10 pounds off when it's 100 degrees and I'm actually fighting a fire. It just sucks when you have to wear the gear "just in case" something happens. We won't be wearing air packs, just the turn out gear, but yes, the turn out gear adds pounds (about 60-80) and heat. I'm hoping the chief will be ok with us only wearing our bunker pants and helmet. We stay a safe distance away so if all hell breaks loose some of us can start putting wet stuff on the red stuff while the others get fully dressed with packs in order to move in closer. It's the demolition derby so we could see fire:-)

I think it's awesome what you do! I know it's something you chose, but I am still going to feel a bit of pain for you decked out in your gear. Shoot I have nothing but editing & graphics to do for the next few days and since it will be in the triple digits, I have a feeling that Amish carriages will be moving faster than I will.

I just found a TV show today called "Meet the Hutterites." It's pretty entertaining. One girl, Claudia, pushes the boundaries of tradition. I think she would be a great fire fighter. You saying Amish reminded me of the show. It's not a horrible thing to be in the gear with the heat. There are plenty of kids who come up to us to look at the trucks and ask me, "Are you a REAL fire fighter? But you're a girl." I love when the young girls come up to me and ask if they can be a fire fighter too and ask to wear my helmet. The kids make it all worth it. Plus, I don't mind sweating off a few pounds:-)

Oh my gosh in first grade I wrote down that I wanted to be a firefighter and a plastic surgeon. My teacher put a big red X through it and told me I am a girl and will be a mommy when I grow up. So I took the paper back and wrote something about having two children that I would feed spaghettio's to. Wasn't my first or last time in the principals office. I totally paved the way for my sister to be a complete ass and get away with it. They shudder when my Moms name is brought up. haha.

Your teacher was a poopybutthead! I'm sure it still happens. It infuriates me that young girls are discouraged from working towards something they want to do because it doesn't fall into a "woman's role." I said that I wanted to be Wonder Woman and was told that I couldn't be. Wonder Woman was my hero. I broke my arm wearing my Wonder Woman Under Roos the week before Kindergarten started. I always found/still find motivation in people who try to discourage me from anything. Or, people who tell me that I can't do something, it won't work, you will never get that done, etc. You can totally be a fire fighter! Seriously. There is also a program for citizens to be a "fire fighter for a day" kind of thing. I am more than happy to find a program near you:-) There is an all woman FF conference coming up in New York that I would love to go to, but that shit costs too much. I've only met two other female fire fighters and both of them are more than happy to do "favors" for the guys on their departments. Needless to say, they don't like me and we really don't talk when we have to be around each other.
    Sorry tl;dr

She's either not hot, or not peeping.

Also, I got shit like that from teachers too (cause I'm Black). WTF?! It's not like we were in school in the 50s!

Some teachers just suck Ron! The same one that busted me for my story, also did a "omg sigh" like I was Omen Spawn when I was using both hands to color at the same time. I later told her Charles Manson was my father. My sister puts my name down as emergency contact just so our last name is on there hahaha.

Also, I was left handed when I started school. Granted, my right arm was broke, but even before that my left hand was dominant. My teacher refused to allow me to use my left hand as dominant. So I adjusted to my right being dominant, but I have been ambidextrous since. I can write, throw, bat, bowl, etc. with both hands, but my right is my dominant hand now.

Did you know that being ambidextrous is prominent in people with learning disabilities?

Also, I had a child that was borderline mentally retarded last year. His previous teacher tried to force him to write with his right hand. Yeah, way to confuse the mentally retarded child even more.
Suzanne Knight (21) brutally raped and devoured 3 toddlers while on a meth binge before hanging herself Marky69: If those toddlers didnt want to be eaten then they shouldnt of looked so god damned delicious. RIP Suzanne

I had no idea. I've never had issues with learning disabilities though. I mean, I use commas too much and inappropriately, but other than that I think I'm good. I was not in the top of my class in high school (but I was still an A student), but I have been in my degree and certificate programs and am a member of the Honor Society. I was an early walker and reader as well. I'm probably retarded in other ways. I think I only became ambidextrous because of the teacher. I was dominant left, broke my right arm, and school started so I had to be left handed. Once the cast came off my teacher forced me to use my right hand. I would use my right hand at school and continue to use my left hand at home. I also started juggling in about 4 or 5th grade and became a drummer, which also probably contributes to my ambidextrousness (I made that up).
    What do you think?

It has been linked to disorders like agraphia, especially if it is forced. Remember that it is essentially rewiring a kids brain. UCLA did a study about it's connections to epilepsy several years back. I guess the Left hand being wrong had continued to the 80's. in the 50's-70's it was common for people to tie a child's left arm to their side to make them right handed.

I am the same way. I am all over the place with what I use for what, but it feels natural. I never had any learning disabilities growing up either, like Mt I was a really good student, honor roll etc. I will say though after I was in a car accident I had to relearn some things like playing guitar, which I had no trouble playing either way before, now I play right handed and I can not sing when I play. I also seem to write with my right hand for a lot of things when I am out or in a learning environment, but at home I use my left. I also still paint using both. I have always had the problem of thinking way faster than I can speak, so I do think I am fucked in the head, but that is totally fine with me. haha.

Fo realz! Me too! I also played guitar when I was younger. That's the link, because I am retarded at playing guitar. I even took lessons for four years and didn't really accomplish anything. Maybe if I learned it left handed things would have turned out differently. I dunno. I can play bass guitar though, right handed. I use to be pretty good. One of my friend's stole my cord so I haven't played for a couple years.

BTW, the fair was freaking hot! I didn't eat a whole lot today and thought I was gonna pass out and barf there for a minute. No fires:-( I saw something on FB that we are suppose to have some pretty raging storms from tonight until Wednesday. I'm not sure if it's suppose to cool off or not, but I have to go back to the fair on Wednesday night for the truck pulls or mud bogs or something. I'm not sure what it is, I just know I have to be there.
