I compulsively throw out everything. I have stuff like my prom and communion dresses but that's it. If I haven't touched it in a month it's gone. I'm pretty sure that's a problem too though.
I'm not even sure if I still have my wedding dress. And I'm still married! When I get to purgin' nothing is safe!

I thought I had thrown out all my wedding 'keepsake' stuff but when we moved I found some of it. I think my dress is at my parents' house. I'm not sure, though.

Me, too. I'm a purger. I throw everything away. I might miss something for a few minutes but then I'm over it. I help other people purge their stuff -- I just went to someone's house to go through her closet. It was very cathartic for both of us.

I have to FORCE myself to throw shit out, though. I feel better after I do it, but I hold things and contemplate if I really want them for a good 5-10 minutes or longer before I finally toss it.
I shop the same way. I'm a very impulsive shopper, which has helped to contribute to my debt. Now, I throw whatever I want into the shopping cart, which gets rid of the urge, and then before I cash out I go through everything and remove about 90% of it  It takes me longer, but I'm saving money AND getting through the urge haha.

I am a complete neat freak nazi with the house. I'm a purger too, and god only knows how much money in clothes I send out for charity every month. I have 2 little wood memory boxes that I keep my important keep sake stuff in, like my grandma's stuff or stuff of my brother's, that's about it. Nothing is safe from the garbage can. I'm bad.

photo album, weed, ps3, dog. :|
^^^ in that order?
I was going to say, in a fire, I'd grab me, the dogs, Eric and then my memory boxes. If we had time, then you start grabbing other shit. In a perfect world that's how it would go anyway. ![]()
i would also grab my laptop, thats like my photoalbum, oh and its has all my lesson plans. my career would be fucked.

The reality is only the living stuff even crosses your mind. Or that's how it was for me anyway. I didn't think of grabbing one other single thing.
I have a fireproof/waterproof safe for my especially valuable things, like important documents, family jewelry and photos. Provided it actually works, that frees me up to grab other things, like my computer and favorite pair of heels.

No, you will not. Imagine what kind of fabulous shoes you could go out and get if you sold that furniture, just sayin.
I would LOVE to be a professional purger of others crap, I love thrift stores etc, so I would be in heaven. Mind you I'd prefer it to be in nice clean homes, with no filth ,bugs, or dead cats.
Nery I diiiiied over grabbing the heels on your way out of the inferno....

It's weird that you guys are talking about this. Last night I was laying in bed, and I could see the christmas tree lights on down the hall. I started thinking about it catching fire, and how I would be completely devastated if I lost our family photos (from the 1800's) or the trunk I keep all the things that were important to my dad.
DS when your house burnt down, did you lose a lot of important things? Even though it's great that you all got out alive, it had to be heart breaking.

Luckily most of the family pictures were in the basement or at my daughter's because she's scanning them all. We lost some of the kids as babies, the ones that were on display and my middle daughter's senior picture. That one turned completely black.
Otherwise, I'm not a real sentimental type and it was really just a great opportunity to get rid of years worth of junk that I'd been, well hoarding I guess.
I stopped by the house yesterday and peaked in the windows. The guy has added on a room and moved the entry door and some windows. It's going to be nice for someone. Not me, but someone.

No, not at all. And if you have a plan to grab certain things then maybe you will. I, as with most of my life, had no plan for fire whatsoever. We were lucky to be able to grab our asses and get out.
I'm not sure if it is just this last episode or what, but I am feeling more and more angry at these selfish fuck kids of the old people hoarders. I mean this one chick just listed a whole bunch of bullshit reasons why her mom can't come live with her right after she threatened the chick with not being able to go with her if she didn't let them clean out the house. Then there is this lady with like 5 fucking kids who are all adults and act shocked to see her current living conditions.
What the fuck kind of assholes don't check in on their elderly parents? Really, elderly or not, who the fuck doesn't visit their mom on a frequent basis? 2 years went by and no one knew their mom was living with water or heat?!!! WTF? I have old ass relatives and yes, they live alone, but you can be damn sure their relatives are checking on them DAILY.
