HARMONY TWP. -- Hot air balloons and bicycles made for strange, yet fun bedfellows during the Third Annual Bicycle Balloon Race held Thursday, July 30 at the Warren County Farmers' Fair.
The fair features a hot air balloon festival with balloon launches, tethers and competitions. The Bicycle Balloon Race is a favorite of pilots, festival organizers and cyclists from the area.

Proceeds from the cyclist registration fee are donated to the ADM Foundation. A total of 19 bicyclists and balloonists paired up to raise $1,900 for the foundation. A total of 27 balloons took off from the fair on Thursday night. In addition to 19 balloons carrying bicyclists, there was another 8 balloons that launched without bikes.

The winners of the Bicycle Balloon Race were Team RE/MAX - pilot Bob Mueller and cyclist Ken Myers. Mueller has attended the festival for the past three years as the pilot for the RE/MAX balloon. RE/MAX of New Jersey has been a sponsor of the festival for over 6 years.
Pilots launched with bike and biker on board. The pilot then must fly past a predetermined landmark and is then able to land and let the biker out. The biker then races back to the fairgrounds. Mueller and Myers completed the race in 41 minutes.
Second place winners were cyclist Joanne Browne and pilot Jon Radowski, coming in at 43 minutes. In a three-way tie for third place at 45 minutes were: cyclist Kevin Kocker and pilot Keith Erwin; cyclist Jeff Wachelka and pilot Fred Grotenhuis, and cyclist Scott Hamilton and pilot Jessie Mazzocchi. Grotenhuis is also the "balloonmeister" and one of the coordinators of the Balloon Festival at the fair. Mazzocchi attended the Balloon Festival for the first time this year and had a great time racing. A local pilot from Lebanon, Mazzocchi is currently the youngest woman in New Jersey that has a commercial pilot rating. Her father and sister are also pilots. To see photos of the Bicycle Balloon race as well as other photos of the fair, visit www.ispyphotography.smugmug.com.
