GUILTY.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A 19-year-old woman accused in a sex case involving two boys has pleaded guilty to two counts of lascivious acts with a child.

Kourtney Babcock, of Yarmouth, pleaded guilty on Monday. She had been charged with three counts of third-degree sexual abuse.

Babcock is accused of having sexual contact with the two boys, ages 12 and 13, at a house in Mediapolis. The investigation began last summer. Babcock told detectives she didn't remember what happened because she was under the influence of prescription drugs and alcohol.

Prosecutors say they'll ask for consecutive 10-year prison terms. Babcock's attorney, Michael Clark, says he will contest that. He's expected to ask the judge for a deferred judgment and probation.

Sentencing is set for April 12.

I don't believe she fits the definition of pedophile. She had pedophile-like behavior in this case, but I think it was just a circumstance of place and time. She's not sexually attracted to kids in general.

Yeah, I can get that. I was making a blanket statement that they hand down light sentences to first time sex offenders and pedophiles in order to "rehabilitate" them. At least that's my opinion.

I don't think it's possible to get of easy if you're convicted sex offender. I mean, there are degrees; probation is easier than 20 years in gaol. But, once you’re a registered sex offender your life is pretty much screwed regardless of whether you serve time.

True story, I know someone who is a registered sex offender (fortunately for him this info isn't available to the gen public like in the US). I'm sure that some people will disagree but I don't think he deserves it. He was in his late teens; he met a girl in her early teens outside a bar in the early hours of the morning. She was unusually physically developed. They were both drunk and he didn't even question her age since she'd just left the bar. They went back to his house, a few days later her mum finds out and freaks, dude was charged soon after. My point is that it's fucked up his life. He has to tell the cops whenever he moves house, gets a tattoo, piercing, scar etc. He is pretty much restricted to working shitty jobs that pay under the table. For a while he tried to get a secure mainstream job but he could never get past the criminal record check. Being labeled as a pedophile is like being a leper in the middle ages.

So, whatever the sentence the rest of her life will be very difficult.

In the U.S., yes, sex offenders get off easy. I get your point in that people who are not true sex offenders or pedophiles and just got caught in some drama are screwed for life. But sex offenders here who rape, molest, and abuse are given multiple chances. Plain and simple.

I don't know much about the US legal system so maybe my post didn't express what I intended. I thought that anyone in the US who is convicted of a sex offence must register as a sex offender, or at least it's permanently on their criminal record. Is this true?

What I was trying to say is that no matter what sentence Kourtney receives, the conviction will change/degrade the rest of her life i.e. employment opportunities, anonymity in her neighborhood and other freedoms that most citizens have, like not being monitored by the police, questioned for crimes that incidentally happen near by etc. I'm not making any judgment on whether that is appropriate and just. All I'm saying is that no sex offender can get of lightly regardless of their sentence because being labeled as a pedophile will follow them everywhere, forever.

Yeah, the idea of mandatory sex offender registration troubles me. On one hand I think that judges should be able to use discretion so that people who obviously aren't pedeofiles, like the two girls you're talking about, don't have to live with the stigma for life. On the other hand it'd suck if real pedeofiles slipped through the cracks because a judge was too selective.

I don't think those girls should have been chrged with anything anyway. There was no victim, they photographed themselves and sent the photos to people in their age group. Just seems mean and pointless.

From what I understand is that the judge does have discretion as to whether or not someone has to be registered as a sex offender. I do believe that some people are not required to after a certain amount of time based on their sentence.

I have a serious problem with the system as it is now. 18 year olds having sex with their 17 year old significant others have to register if they are caught. As you said, it ruins lives. But men (and women) who molest young children and rape are put on probation, maybe a year of jail time. They get out, they do it again, and they go back for maybe 5 years. They do it again and at that point they are put away for an extended period. They are given the opportunity to make more and more victims. It's completely fucked.

So I think in a round-about way, we agree  :lol:
