CHANDLER, AZ – A three-week old infant was admitted to a Chandler hospital on Monday with life-threatening injuries after being physically abused by her father, according to authorities.
Police arrested Brian Mark Hopf, 25, after he admitted to dropping the baby and poking her in the eye.
According to authorities, Hopf said that he was taking care of the victim while the mother slept. Hopf reportedly said during a police interview that he accidentally poked the child in the eye while he was feeding her in the early morning hours.
Hopf went on to say that after he poked her, the baby was screaming and crying so hard that she had stopped breathing and he had to perform CPR to get her to breathe again, officials say.
Police reportedly informed Hopf about the head trauma sustained by the victim and Hopf began to cry. According to authorities, he explained the injuries occurred after he tripped and fell while carrying the victim upstairs, hitting the baby’s head on a doorjamb as a result.
Hopf did not call 911 or notify any one of the four other adults in the house at the time, authorities say.
The mother of the child reportedly noticed a severe bruise on the victims’ eye when she woke up, and took her to the hospital.
The infant sustained multiple injuries including three skull fractures, fractured ribs, four tears to her anus, retinal hemorrhaging, brain swelling, and irreversible brain damage, officials say.
Doctors at the hospital treating the victim say that the head trauma was caused by multiple blows, officials say.
According to authorities, Hopf admitted during the police interview that he also abused meth.
Hopf is facing one charge of child abuse and is being held at Maricopa County jail on a $500,000 bond. It is unknown at this time whether additional charges will be brought against him.
