Crappiest flight ever: 26 passengers with gastroenteritis make 13 hour flight a living hell

    From From NEWS.COM.AU Last Updated: 3:33 PM, August 1, 2013 Posted: 10:57 AM, August 1, 2013

Thirteen hours in the air, eight toilets and 26 passengers violently ill with gastroenteritis.

That was the scene when an international flight became the trip from hell after 26 passengers fell sick during a Qantas flight.

The group, believed to be a tour group traveling together, were sick before they embarked on the 13 hour and 51 minute flight from Santiago, Chile yesterday.

"The people were sick prior to the flight," a Qantas spokesman said. "It was a tour group that had food poisoning so it was contained to them."

A statement from the NSW Ministry of Health said the group had developed "vomiting and diarrhea on the plane" consistent with norovirus infection, which is a common cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Australia and elsewhere.

The flight was aboard a Boeing 747-400 which has a total of seven toilets located on the main deck and one on the upper deck.

A statement from the NSW Ambulance service said the 26 passengers were assessed at the scene.

"Of those, 16 patients required transport to hospital, three of whom were stretcher patients," the statement reads.

A total of 10 patients were transported to the Prince of Wales Hospital, the remaining six were transported to St George Hospital.

"Ambulance will assess the sick passengers, and if well enough to leave they can be cohorted through the airport with minimal exposure to other passengers," a Spokesperson from the Ministry of Health said.

"NSW Health has provided Qantas with a letter and factsheet about viral gastro to distribute to all departing passengers, as well as advice for cleaning and cabin staff."

As a precaution, other passengers have been advised to keep a close eye on their health over the next 24 to 48 hours and seek medical advice if they become unwell.

Scores of family members were left high and dry in the arrivals hall with no official word from Qantas over the incident.

David Sanhueza and his family from Mount Druitt were left waiting two hours for his mother-in-law, Carmen Caro, visiting from Chile.

"They don't give you any information, there's nothing out of the speaker. I went and saw customer service but they wouldn't give me anything," he said.

Her granddaughter Jennifer Sanhueza said the family only found out what was going on from the news.

"We weren't told much, we only heard from a phone call that it was all over the news," she said.

Mrs Caro said the the group that got on in Brazil had been vomiting the whole flight.

"A whole lot of kids got on the plane at Brazil and they were all vomiting and sick," she said in Spanish translated by her granddaughter.

Bernie Herrenberg was left waiting balloons in hand for the return of his 23-year-old daughter Stefanie.

"I've been waiting and all I know is what my daughter SMSd me," he said.

The SMS shown to The Daily Telegraph read: "Woo just landed! So our plane is being quarantine because there were heaps of people with a bad virus on it. I have no idea how long it will take but it will definitely delay us."

Qantas passengers ill on Chile to Sydney flight Associated Press 7:02 pm | Thursday, August 1st, 2013

More than 20 passengers who became ill during a Qantas flight from Chile to Australia were treated by paramedics and placed in quarantine Thursday on arrival at Sydney airport, the airline said.

The sick passengers were part of the same tour group and were suspected to have contracted their gastro intestinal illness before they boarded the 14-hour flight in Santiago, Qantas said.

The Boeing 747 was met by ambulance paramedics who treated the sick passengers in quarantine, Qantas spokesman Luke Enright said.

The New South Wales state Health Ministry said in a statement that the 26 passengers developed vomiting and diarrhea consistent with norovirus infection, a common cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Australia and elsewhere.

Paramedics were assessing the sick passengers, all Australian residents. Passengers well enough to leave were to be escorted through the airport with minimal exposure to other passengers, the ministry said.

Enright could not say when the flight crew became aware of the sickness on board. It was not an emergency that could have resulted in the flight being diverted, he said.

?They?ve known for some time in the air that sickness was aboard so they were able to call through and organize for the appropriate authorities to greet the aircraft at the arrival, and those passengers were quarantined,? Enright said.

The ill passengers were moved to seats at the rear of the plane near where four toilets were located, Australian Associated Press reported. Enright confirmed that the passengers were seated near the rear, but could not say whether they had been moved there by the cabin crew.

Qantas said other passengers were advised to keep a close eye on their health over the next two days and to seek medical advice if they feel ill.

Enright declined to say how many passengers were on the flight. AAP reported that more than 300 passengers were aboard, without citing a source.

I can't copy this one, but they've likened the incident to "Snakes On A Plane" with a slight name change -

There Was a Poop Plane in Australia

    BY CONNOR SIMPSON | AUG 3, 2013

It turns out a recent flight took a turn for the toilet after a group of passengers were infected with a virus that caused them to spend more than 12 hours in the air while barely being to contain the their stomachs' contents. The flight was so awful it sounded like the "poop cruise"'s second cousin.

You may remember the "poop cruise" that was stranded in the Gulf of Mexico last February because CNN made into this huge thing. The passengers were running out of food and supplies and things got messy. CNN's coverage became the punchline to a million bad jokes, even some from The Atlantic Wire, and became synonymous with the Jeff Zucker era at the 24 hour news network.

But this sounds so, so much worse. Jalopnik called it "the poop plane from hell," and, well, they're right. Sixteen passengers on a 13-hour Qantas flight from Chile to Australia were taken to the hospital after they, along with a few others, contracted symptoms consistent with norovirus while in the air, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Norovirus causes the stomach and intestine to inflame, and leads to stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

A group of students and teachers returning from a school trip spent the entire flight pooping and vomiting because, officials believe, the group acquired the virus prior to boarding the plane. And, to make matters worse, the Australian Associated Press reports the Boeing 747-400 only had four toilets. Three people were carted off the plane on a stretcher. Lisa McCormick, an unlucky passenger who was luckily not infected with the gastrointestinal illness, described the ordeal to a local news outlet:

She said they "unfortunately were rather sick for the whole entire flight. What a terrible way to end their holiday".

"It just gradually wore through them all as the flight wore on, and it was 13 hours so it was a very long flight for them,"she said.

To make things easier for everyone on board, the Australian AP says the infected passengers were moved to the back of the plane. That probably didn't help the smell much, but it didn't hurt, either.

There's no word whether the Australian CNN covered the flight as extensively as the poop cruise.

All I can say is they were damn lucky it wasn't the 26 hr, no stop-over flight from Heathrow to Sydney. That one's pretty nasty even without a virulent strain of stomach virus. Bleck.

(Sorry!! Don't puke! It's NOT REAL - it's just a movie still. Besides, it should be obvious it's completely fake because Qantas toilets have nowhere near that much space)

    I thought I read it started mid-air.

My hubby teases me because he says I always carry weird things with me on a plane: a bandana and a small body mist spray to name a couple. I do that because this is my nightmare scenario and I would want to cover my nose and smell something nice(r) than puke or poop.

I can't even imagine how horrible this was. :::::full.body.shudder:::::

100% this. I can't handle stuff like that. And I'm afraid of flying.

This takes ownership of my number one fear, ever. I would skydive first.

Well, to be fair to the sickies... they were students on a school trip. They don't really have control of their own destiny. I don't know what the protocol is if you have a bunch of teenagers to try to get home. I suspect you're damned in any case. Keep them in a foreign country, try to figure out how to house them, maybe get them medical care? What if it's so serious that someone (many someones dies?) Keep the ones that aren't sick entertained and out of trouble. Or get their sick asses on a plane and back to their parents asap. Certainly the less expensive option... If it was one or two, you could leave them with an adult and reschedule their trip home but 26?

    Ugh.
