Killings by the mentally ill 'on rise'

    http://living.aol.co.uk/health/health-fitness-news/killings-by-mentally-ill-on-rise/article/2009072819053766957559

The number of killings by the mentally ill is increasing, new figures have revealed.

Academics found the number of homicides committed by people with a mental illness in England and Wales went up from 54 in 1997 to more than 70 in 2005.
But the increase was not due to killers who had already been diagnosed, the study showed.
The Manchester University study found one in 10 homicides between 1997 and 2005 were carried out by someone who had been in contact with mental health services in the previous year.

But the authors of the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People and Mental Illness said the overall risk of being killed by a schizophrenic was one in 20,000.
Professor Louis Appleby, director of the inquiry, said: "There has been an unexplained rise in the number of homicides by people with mental illness and we now have to try to understand why this has happened.
"It is important to emphasise that the increase has not occurred in mental health patients.
"It is also important to keep these findings in perspective. The risk of being a victim of homicide in England and Wales is around 1 in 1,000 and the risk of being killed by someone with schizophrenia is around 1 in 20,000." Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity Sane, said the increase is "disturbing".
She said warnings by family members about the behaviour of their relatives often went "unheeded" by mental health service providers.
I feel so much safer knowing that i'm more likely to get murdered by a sane person than an insane one phew!!!

"She said warnings by family members about the behaviour of their relatives often went "unheeded" by mental health service providers."

Its those professionals that should be picking up on potentially dangerous behaviour anyway, so to then ignore warning from family members about any is beyond excusable.

'Care in the Community' may be a cheaper option for the UK's National Health Service, but some patients need more looking after than it can provide.
