Re: Lindsey Baum (10) Didn't come home Friday night. Mccleary, Washington

McCLEARY, Wash. - As the days get shorter and the nights grow colder, search teams looking for missing 11-year-old Lindsey Baum are stepping up.

Today Fort Lewis soldiers will join the search for the little girl as her story continues to gather national attention.

Immediately after her disappearance, search teams were plentiful and hundreds were working to try and find her. Now that months have passed, attention is waning. But there are those who will never give up, and now national attention will be focused on the case.

On Tuesday the "Oprah Winfrey Show" will be featuring Lindsey Baum's case. Lindsey's mother Melissa spent two days with producers and cameras. Many are hoping this national attention will help find her.

But far from the glamour of national television shows, locals are still doing what they can to help.

This morning supporters of Lindsey and her family continued searching. The search is vast, with no clear idea where to start or even where to look. But they are determined to try.

Lindsey was walking home from a friend's house when she disappeared on the evening of June 26. Despite an intensive police search including the FBI and high-tech tools, nothing has turned up.

Still those who know and love the little girl say they will never give up hope that she is alive and will come home.

Lindsey supporters began searching at 9 this morning in the McCleary area. They will continue searching until dark.

Re: Lindsey Baum (10) vanished from Mccleary, Washington in June 2009

    Family victimized:

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Relatives of Lindsey Baum, the McCleary 10-year-old girl who vanished in June, called Olympia police last month to report a stranger in their backyard.

The homeowner said the man was crouching beneath the bedroom window of Baum's two female cousins, who are 9 and 12 years old.

Olympia Police said any connection between the two cases is coincidental, but Grays Harbor County investigators have been in touch with Olympia Detectives about the Nov. 13 incident.

Investigators in the Baum case have not identified any suspects in the girl's disappearance.

"It's scary," said Derric, the father of the girls who did not want his last name published. Derric said he and his wife were already nervous about their kids' safety after what happened to his niece.

"It even makes you more cautious about your own children," said Derric.

Olympia police have released a sketch of the suspect from the case in the backyard break-in. Detectives said the man may be responsible for two attempted luring cases in Olympia in November.

On Nov. 10, about eight blocks from the house where the man was seen, a man approached a 10-year-old girl and asked if she needed a ride. She ran home and police were contacted.

On November 24, about two miles from the home, a 9-year-old girl said a stranger asked her if she could help him load groceries into her car. She said no and ran away.

In both incidents, the man was reportedly driving a silver car.

Detectives said the girls did not think the man in the sketch released by police was the man that approached them, but police said it's possible he could be responsible for all three incidents.

When Derric confronted the man in his backyard , he asked what the man was doing. Derric said the man told him he was a building inspector. Derric said when he asked the man for his I.D., the man walked quickly to his car, and drove off. Derric told police the man was driving a silver Mazda.

Re: Lindsey Baum (10) vanished from Mccleary, Washington in June 2009

Contrary to some of the rumors that may be going around the search of the Baum residence was a voluntary search. The Baum's are getting ready to move and to ensure that nothing was overlooked a voluntary search was done on the Baum residence before the home could be contaminated by new residents, preparation for new residents or possible information could be lost or misplaced during packing or the move itself.

This search was not done because the Baum's are suspects or POI's - they are not and this was just a standard precautionary action to ensure that anything that may be needed in the future was in the custody of Law Enforcement. For those that are doubtful I suggest you listen to some of the previous releases and statements made by Law Enforcement over the course of this investigation.

Please feel free to follow up with the press releases made by Under Sheriff Rick Scott for more details as to why this search was and was not done.

[/quote]Generally, no, but it sounds like these people were being stalked by at least one person obsessed with the child('s disappearance) so I can understand why they would leave the area. I'm sure dealing with a missing child is horrible enough without one or more stalkers adding to your stress.

Re: Lindsey Baum (10) vanished from Mccleary, Washington in June 2009

McCLEARY, Wash. - Grays Harbor County investigators want to speak with two men seen on surveillance video the night a girl vanished in McCleary last June.

The men are not considered suspects in the disappearance of ten-year-old Lindsey Baum.

Police say they were seen entering a convenience store at a Shell station near the spot where Baum was last seen walking home from a friend's house June 26, 2009.

Investigators believe one of the men was driving a white Honda Ridgeline pickup truck.

Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said investigators consider the men potential witnesses.

"Perhaps something they saw that's important to us was meaningless to them," said Scott.

Tracking down people like the two men is the main focus of the renewed effort in McCleary to figure out what happened to Lindsey Baum.

"Until we recreate that moment in time we're not going to know exactly who was out and about and which person… it could be this gentleman here who has that one piece of information that's going to solve this mystery," said Scott.

Investigators are well aware that the two men, if they can be found, may not help the case one bit, but they want to be sure. And while the video is 10 months old, it's relatively new to them. They're blaming the delay on technical problems and a language barrier with the owner of the Shell station.

Re: Lindsey Baum (10) vanished from Mccleary, Washington in June 2009

Nearing one year anniversary. New search:

MCCLEARY, Wash. - The first anniversary of Lindsey Baum's disappearance is nearing.  Crews are meticulously picking through different forested areas around McCleary this weekend, using new tactics to find evidence of her or her captor.  Shoulder to shoulder, volunteers wield rakes, picks, even machetes.  They're looking for anything that shouldn't naturally be there.

"This is probably the hardest part of the searching part for evidence, especially when you have to go through all the brush as these folks," said volunteer crew boss Doyle Wenzel.  "Its amazing what you can find out in the forest that people have discarded. We found a safe earlier this morning, clothing, blankets, gloves.... "

Wenzel marks and categorizes every bit of potential evidence. This weekend's hunt through the brush around the Grays Harbor town of McCleary is a combination of old and new:  Volunteers use old-fashioned hand tools to search out areas defined by new technology.  Analysts sitting in offices have cross referenced computerized tips, GPS images and reports to narrow down the search field.

The lack off any solid evidence surrounding Baum's disappearance last June at least leaves hope that she might still be living. Yet, cadaver trained dogs also join the hunt for clues.

"In these types of situations, we have to look at both sides of the spectrum, " said Detective Ed McGowan with the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Department.

Just this week investigators released the only home video known to exist of then 10-year-old Lindsey. It was taken months before she walked home from a friend's house in June 2009 and was never seen again. Meanwhile, detectives still hope to find the two men shown in surveillance video taken the night she disappeared. They may have unknowingly witnessed something suspicious.

The search through the forest continues through Sunday.  More than 70 volunteers, representing at least five different agencies, are hoping their investment of time and work will ultimately pay off.

"That one little piece of evidence we find today, may lead us to solving the case," said McGowan.

Both Grays Harbor and the FBI have dedicated detectives assigned to this case. They will next analyze any evidence discovered in the forest.

Missing girl turns up at Lindsey Baum gathering

OLYMPIA, Wash. – In an ironic twist, a missing 15-year-old girl from Kitsap County turned up Saturday at a gathering for the Northwest's most well-known missing girl.

A parent who was attending the gathering in support of missing McCleary girl Lindsey Baum noticed the 15-year-old girl wandering around the park where the event was being held.

The parent contacted the girl and offered her a meal. As they talked, the girl told the parent she was a runaway. The parent alerted a state trooper who was at the park.

The trooper talked with the 15-year-old girl, who first gave a fictitious name. When the trooper could find no record of that name, the girl gave her real name.

The 15-year-old’s father was contacted in the Tri-Cities area, and he verified that she was an endangered runaway and had been missing from her Kitsap County home for about a month.

The 15-year-old girl was released to a relative with her father’s permission.

Re: Lindsey Baum (10) vanished from Mccleary, Washington in June 2009

Police have searched a home and storage facility in relation to Lindseys disappearance:

MCCLEARY, Wash. – A home and storage facility were searched Tuesday in the case of missing 12-year-old Lindsey Baum and detectives are looking at a person of interest.

Baum was last seen the night of June 26, 2009 after leaving a friend's house. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named.

Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott says search warrants were served at Easy Storage at 967 West Simpson Avenue and a home at 114 Fir Street. The FBI and Grays Harbor County detectives both conducted the search for several hours.

Investigators did not find any clues in Baum's disappearance, but they did take some items to see if they contain forensic evidence.

Detectives are focusing on a 47-year-old man who lives at the home and shares the storage unit with the home's owners. The man is someone investigators spoke to in the days following Baum's disappearance because he lives one block off the route she would have taken home. Without getting into specifics, detectives say the man recently showed up on their radar again.

"Suffice to say some of the information we were provided, and then information that we developed ourselves, were inconsistent," said Scott.

Police won't release his name, but neighbor Crystal Richey knows who he is.

"He's never freaked me out. He's never made me feel uncomfortable to have around my son," said Richey.

Scott says the man is one of about 30 persons of interest since Baum disappeared. When approached by KING 5 News, the man refused to comment.

Police say the two search warrants are the fourth and fifth served in the Baum investigation, although there have been dozens of searches in the case.

Baum turned 12-years-old last Wednesday. There is a $25,000 reward for information leading toward finding her. For more information, visit the Lindsey Baum website: http://www.findlindseybaum.com/

They've started clearing brush on some overgrown land in the area:

McCLEARY, Wash. -  State prison work crews have cleared a large patch of overgrown land in McCleary where searchers have been looking for a girl since June of last year.

Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott told radio station KXRO that removing the brush gave investigators a closer look. A number of items were collected and sent to a lab for examination as possible evidence.

Scott says none of the items are sending up "red flags" in the disappearnce of Lindsey Baum, but he says it's worth the closer look.

I hate to bump this and make DT jump again, but they had another news story on Lindsey (No new leads):

MCCLEARY, Wash. – Melissa Baum watched Thursday as the heart-shaped balloon she released to mark her missing daughter's 13th birthday floated into the sky.
Lindsey Baum has not been seen since walking home from a friend's house in McCleary on June 26, 2009.
"This is when I'm supposed to start going to manicures with her," said Melissa, who believes Lindsey is still alive.
Melissa also marked the day with a cake with the words "Happy Birthday, Lindsey." She served slices to investigators with Grays Harbor County and the FBI, who have been searching for her daughter.
Melissa Baum and Lindsey's friends will plant a tree in Lindsey's honor Thursday night.
There is a $35,000 reward for information leading to Lindsey's return. More information is at the Find Lindsey Baum website.

Elizabeth Smart Signs TV Deal With ABC News

7/7/2011 8:04 AM PDT by TMZ Staff
Elizabeth Smart -- who was famously kidnapped and held captive for 9 months when she was 14 -- has signed a deal with ABC News to become a commentator on missing persons and child abduction cases.

A rep for ABC says 23-year-old Smart could be on the air within the next few weeks.

A spokesperson for Smart says Elizabeth wants to take the job so she can create awareness about cases involving missing children.

*I remember when it looked like Elizabeth was gone for good. Maybe Lindsey's story will be portrayed on the new show.

Person of interest under investigation, but no solid evidence yet:

MCCLEARY, Wash. – Investigators are looking for two women seen on surveillance video talking to a jewelry store owner considered a person of interest in the case of missing McCleary girl Lindsey Baum.

KING 5 News has learned the man told investigators he was not in town when Baum disappeared on June 26, 2009, but the video appears to contradict that.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office said the video was recorded from Mike’s Market at 204 West Simpson Avenue. About 23 seconds in, the man is seen chatting briefly with two other customers before he left.

The time stamp on the video is 9:20 p.m. That's close to when Baum, who was 10 at the time, disappeared while walking home.

Investigators would like to speak to the women.

Police served a search warrant on the man’s business, Hartman Jewelry, on Oct. 18, 2011, as part of the Baum investigation. He is one of several dozen persons of interest in the case.

It's believed Baum vanished about a quarter-mile from the jewelry store, which is a couple blocks away from Mike's Market.

The sheriff’s office said it held off releasing the video until now at the request of the FBI as part of their ongoing investigation.

There is currently a $35,000 reward to find Baum. You can find more information at the Find Lindsey Baum website.

This is from 15 Feb 2012, so it's not breaking news, but it follows on from the last article posted. I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with the 2 unidentified women too, so will try to hunt that down as well.

Grays Harbor County, Wash. - On Wednesday, police revealed the items found when a search was conducted of a person of interest in the case of missing girl Lindsey Baum.

In a search warrant, police note over 100 items were taken from the McCleary man who owns a jewelry store in the area. The items were taken from his car, home and business and include, according to KIROTV.com:

Apparent fingernail from passenger side of car
    Ropes and straps
Numerous computers and computer storage devices
    Pink sheet with unknown stains
Brown duffle bag with assumed human hair
    Handwritten notes regarding missing child

Just last week, authorities released convenience store footage showing the person of interest. They note that he told police he was out of town when Lindsey vanished, however, the video of him at the store proves he was actually in the area at the time.

The man told KING 5 that he initially told police he wasn't in McCleary when Lindsey went missing, but noted that he was working as a volunteer firefighter in Grays Harbor and Mason Counties and forgot he had made a trip to the store while driving between the two locations.

The convenience store where the video was taken is located near where Lindsey was last seen walking home. In addition, the time stamp on the footage is 9:20 p.m., which is close to the time Lindsey was making her way back to her house.

Ten-year-old Lindsey left her friend?s home on foot between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. on the evening of June 26, 2009, heading to her own house, just three blocks away. She has not been seen since that night over two years ago.

Lindsey has brown hair and brown eyes, is 4?9? tall, 80 lbs., and was last seen wearing a light blue hooded pullover shirt and blue jeans.

A $35,000 reward is being offered to find Lindsey.

Anyone who might have any information about the whereabouts of Lindsey Baum should call 1-866-915-8299 or via e-mail soadmin@co.grays-harbor.wa.us. Information may also be mailed to PO Box 305 McCleary, 98557.

Maybe this is what I was thinking of? It's a much earlier article but says the women were identified as sisters -

    From http://www.komonews.com/news/local/I...139031194.html

MCCLEARY, Wash. - Investigators identified a local jewelry store owner Thursday as a person of interest in the June 2009 disappearance of Lindsey Baum - but the store owner himself denies having anything to do with it.

Tim Hartman, owner of Hartman's Jewelry and Repair in McCleary, admits he "unintentionally" gave false information to authorities about his whereabouts on the night Lindsey vanished. But he maintains his innocence, saying he knows nothing about what happened to the girl and actually helped in the search for her.

The identification of Hartman as a person of interest in the case coincided with the release Thursday of a video from a convenience store in the area that was recorded the evening Lindsey vanished while walking home from a friend's house.

The video shows Hartman making a purchase in the store at about the same time Lindsey vanished, around 9:15 p.m. on June 26, 2009. Hartman had previously told investigators he wasn't in McCleary at that time.

Also seen in the video are two women, one of whom can be seen speaking briefly with Hartman. Investigators want to interview the women, and asked for the public's help in identifying them.

Within hours of the video's release, the women were identified as two sisters living in McCleary, and detectives said they were planning to interview them.

Hartman's car, home and his shop were searched in October as part of the investigation into Lindsey's disappearance.

The shop, Hartman's Jewelry and Repair on Fourth Street, is on the route that Lindsey would have taken to get back home on the night she disappeared.

Hartman earlier told police he was not in the McCleary area at the time of Lindsey's disappearance -but the newly released video shows that he actually was there.

In an interview on Thursday, Hartman told KOMO News that he had nothing to do with Lindsey's disappearance.

He admitted he initially told police he was not at the convenience store, but said he honestly doesn't remember being there at the time in question.

He says he showed investigators a "certificate" showing that he had been in a class in Belfair until 9 p.m. on June 26 and couldn't have made it to McCleary by 9:15 p.m. But he says FBI investigators then determined that the class actually had ended at 8:15 p.m.

"I still don't remember being here the night Lindsey disappeared, but they have me at Mike's (Market) at 21:15 on their camera, 'cause I looked at the picture, and I said, 'Yeah, that is me.' But I still don't remember being here at that time."

Hartman tells KOMO News he made an ambulance run later in the evening of June 26, and when he returned to McCleary, the search for Lindsey already was under way.

He says Chief George Crumb of the McCleary Police Department then asked him to join in the search, which he did. But Chief Crumb now says he doesn't remember asking him to take part, Hartman says.

After joining in the search for a while, Hartman says he returned home but couldn't sleep, so he went out searching again. It was then, at about 1 a.m., that he says he ran into Lindsey's mother, and says he drove her to a local creek where Lindsey sometimes went to play, in hopes they would find her there.

He says he searched there, and he left some markers to show where he had searched, but they were gone the next day.

"I don't have a clue what's going on," he told KOMO News. "They got to do what they got to do. ... They're wasting a lot of money investigating me."

Hartman says the search of his home and business has "done damage to my reputation."

"Don't accuse me of something I didn't do," he says. "All I can do is tell them what I know, which is nothing about the little girl."

Hartman also says he was interrogated by police for about eight hours in January, and has taken two polygraph tests.

He says he initially was told that he passed the first test, but later was told that he had failed it. So he took a second test, which investigators told him was "inconclusive."

Lindsey Baum was 10 years old when she disappeared. A $35,000 reward has been offered in the case.

At the time of her disappearance, Lindsey was 4-foot-9, 80 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a light blue hooded pullover shirt and blue jeans.

I just watched it. She was found deceased in 2017 by hunters and they just matched her DNA. It’s now a homicide and kidnapping investigation so they aren’t releasing specific details.
