Colby Curtin (10) dies after having final wish granted

Colby Curtin got her final wish.

The 10-year-old girl desperately wanted to see the new Disney-Pixar movie, "Up." But the cancer-stricken girl was too sick to go to a theater.

Thanks to a family friend who got in touch with the movie studio Pixar, an employee of the Emeryville-based company arrived at Colby's home with a DVD copy of the movie, The Orange County Register reported Friday. The girl died later that night.

Colby's mother, Lisa, said she had asked her daughter if she could hang on until the movie arrived.

"I'm ready (to die), but I'm going to wait for the movie," she said her daughter replied.

"Up" is the animated tale of a grumpy old man who, after his wife's death, tries to fulfill their joint dream of visiting South America by tying thousands of balloons to his house and floating away.

"When I watched it, I had really no idea about the content of the theme of the movie," Colby's mother told the Register. "I just know that word 'Up' and all of the balloons and I swear to you, for me it meant that (Colby) was going to go up. Up to heaven."

Colby, who was diagnosed with vascular cancer in 2005, saw previews for the film in April.

"It was from then on, she said, 'I have to see that movie. It is so cool,"' family friend Carole Lynch said.

But the girl's health began to deteriorate. On June 4, Curtin asked a hospice company to bring a wheelchair so that her daughter could go to a movie theater but the chair was not delivered over the weekend, Curtin said.

By June 9, Colby was too sick to go anywhere.

Another family friend, Terrell Orum, called both Pixar and Disney, which owns the animation studio. The message was received by Pixar officials, who agreed to send someone to Colby's house the next day with a copy of "Up" for a private screening, Orum said.

The employee arrived with the DVD, stuffed animals of characters and other movie memorabilia.

Colby was unable to open her eyes to see the movie so her mother described the scenes. When her mother asked if she enjoyed it, the girl nodded, Curtin said.

The Pixar employee left after the movie, taking the DVD, which has not been released. Lynch, who was with the family during the screening, said the employee's "eyes were just welled up."

A call to Pixar seeking comment was not immediately returned Friday.

Colby, with her parents nearby, died later that night.

Her mother said one of the memorabilia left by the Pixar employee was an "adventure book" based on a scrapbook that, in the movie, is kept by the wife of the main character.

"I'll have to fill those adventures in for her," Lisa Curtin said of her daughter.

Re: Colby Curtin (10) dies after having final wish granted

Disney and Universal did AMAZING things for kids like this when I worked for them. I wrote this for my blog a couple years ago, you guys might like it... It was written after I lost a cousin in a head-on collision this last March, and I was depressed and doing a lot of thinking.

It's no secret that the past week has been hard as hell on me. I don't think I have cried this much since I lost my Dad, and I know the funeral tomorrow will be emotional and tough to handle. I wouldn't be anywhere else though, Taft was a really cool cousin and he is a huge part of my childhood memories. I don't think I could write anything that would do him justice.

This news has had me thinking (dangerous, I know)...

This is not a photo of me, just the location of where the story takes place :)

A long time ago, I shared a story about a little boy I met while working at Universal Studios Orlando. His name was Nathan, and he was dying of cancer. His trip to Orlando was a gift from the Make A Wish Foundation, and Nathan's wish was to meet Barney the Dinosaur.

On the day Nathan and his parents made their way to the Barney Show, I happened to be the opening employee. It was my job to greet the guests as they entered the small, indoor playground and give them any information they needed to attend the show. I was standing at the giant archway at the front of the attraction in front of a giant Barney water feature when I saw two adults and a child in a wheelchair approach me. It wasn't until I saw the button on Nathan's shirt that displayed the "Make A Wish Foundation" that I realized he was going to be an extra special guest.

Nathan's smile got bigger and bigger as he reached the water fountain. He saw pictures of Barney, BJ and Baby Bop all over the place and he was getting really excited to meet the purple dinosaur. I squatted down so I could look at Nathan on his eye level and introduced myself. I usually introduced myself to all the kids first, everyone got a kick out of that... especially because the area was themed for kids.

Nathan's smile was HUGE when I asked to shake his hand. He told me his wish was to meet Barney. That was really cool, because it was rare for us to get someone who planned their whole trip in order to see what we put our time and effort into each day. I immediately got tears in my eyes when I looked at his parents. They were happy, and sad. They knew this was his wish... but it was his final wish. That is something I can't even wrap my head around.

I told Nathan a little fib. I told him Barney was expecting him (we were not given a heads up, but sometimes that happens) and he was getting first class treatment for the show. He stood up and got out of his wheelchair in excitement. I took his hand and took him to the indoor playground and gave him a little tour of all the things he could do. Nathan was a sick little boy, but that morning he had tons of energy and excitement. He even ran and tripped over something and scared his Mom at one point. Nathan just smiled, waved that he was okay, and continued to jump on musical stepping stones and slide down the tree house slides.

I excused myself for a few moments and called my supervisor on the radio. I told her what was going on and got permission to pull off some fantastic things for Nathan and his family. This was all going to be a big surprise for him... and I was thrilled to be a part of putting a smile on his face and helping his parents make sure he had some fantastic memories.

I went to the Barney store and picked up a T-shirt, a Barney doll, BJ doll, Baby Bop doll. I also grabbed a Barney balloon and put it all on Universal's tab. I would have paid for it myself if I would have had to... believe me.

Pretty soon it was time to load all the guests in an area to get ready to see the show. I pulled Nathan and his parents off to the side and told them that when they got into the theater to look for me. I would be waving my hands wildly to get their attention because I would be saving their front row seat. Nathan was so excited, he jumped up and down and said, "Thank you!!!" over and over again.

When the theater doors opened for the guests, Nathan spotted me immediately and I escorted them to the best seats in the house. It was hard to notice Nathan was a sick little boy at this point. I don't think he sat in his chair the entire show... he was singing and dancing and clapping with the audience. At that moment, he was just a little boy having a good time... and everyone in the theater knew how precious that was.

Soon, the show was over, and Nathan and his family were picking up their things and getting ready to leave with the rest of the guests. I walked over to them and winked... I told them to hang out for a few minutes. I couldn't say more than that for fear another guest would overhear what was about to happen. All the employees (and Barney) wanted the moment to be personal and just for them... it was the right thing to do.

I walked the family over to a designated area after the rest of the guests had left the theater. That is when Barney, BJ and Baby Bop all snuck out of a hiding spot with all of the goodies we had picked out for him earlier. I told his Mom and Dad I would videotape everything for them, so they could just enjoy the moment.

Most kids are a little freaked out when three fuzzy life-size creatures are approaching them, but not this little boy! He started telling Barney and the other dinos stories and giving them tons of hugs. He even did a little dance with Baby Bop. It was the sweetest thing. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Not one. Except Nathan. Nathan was just having fun.

We gave Nathan front row seats for all 5 shows during the day. During the last show, he became my special helper and assisted me with getting people to their seats. He told the other kids that he was best friends with Barney and he was here to help for the day. It was fantastic.

Eventually, the day had to end. The employees had to go home and the park had to close for the day. We were sad to see our special helper go.

A few months later I received an email from Nathan's Mom. Nathan had passed away in his sleep after his battle with cancer, and he was buried in his Barney T-shirt and his dinosaur stuffed animals.

During the whole day Nathan thanked us a million times. When I look back, I should be thanking him. He taught me a lot about cherishing each and every moment of our lives.

The loss of my cousin, along with other family members and friends passing away, brought this story from my memory bank because I wish I could go back and give them all one last hug, give them one last smile, tell them I love them one more time... but I can't.

Leaving the Mormon Church has made me question everything I ever thought about heaven and being with our family and friends again after we die. Will they be up there waiting for us when it's our time? I don't know. Only one word pops in my mind to describe my feelings about that...

    Hope.

Tomorrow I go to a funeral to celebrate the life of a young man who was taken too young. To say this isn't fair is an understatement. I am not talking about unfair to me... but unfair to him and his parents and his brother and sister. They are in pain and there isn't much I can do to help.

Please cherish your friends and family today. Give them hugs and tell them you love them... even if they don't like you or the decisions you have made. When it comes down to it, none of that matters in the end.
Sappy, I know. But true. I think about Nathan all the time. He changed my life.

Re: Colby Curtin (10) dies after having final wish granted

I have totally hijacked this topic, and I am sorry.

I think that Colby would appreciate these stories, though. They are directly from the Make A Wish Foundation website. I can't volunteer there anymore (moved back to Utah) so I have to donate with funds instead. I just think this is one of those charities that deserves to last forever...

Most of us, if given the chance, would wish for something for ourselves. But one special little boy's wish serves as a shining example of just how selfless and giving children can be.

Robin was receiving treatment at a children's hospital the first time his Make-A-Wish Foundation® wish granter met him. The two of them plopped down at a child-sized table in the room to chat about Robin's wish.

The wish granter brought Robin a toy, which he kept eyeing. Robin indicated that one of his wishes was for that very toy. The wish granter told him that he could have the toy and still have a wish - and then asked Robin, "If you had one wish, what would it be?"

Robin, with his little hands on his hips, asked, "Can you make me the boss of the ice cream man?"

He explained that every day when the ice cream truck comes through his neighborhood, some of his friends don't have enough money for ice cream. He said that he feels very fortunate that his mother makes sure that he does have enough money for ice cream—but that eight quarters is a lot of money for ice cream.

He always tells his friends, "When I grow up, I am going to be boss of the ice cream man and make him give everyone ice cream!"

Instead of asking for something like a dream vacation, or the chance to meet his favorite celebrity, Robin's number one wish was to give something to those less fortunate than him.

On a beautiful spring day, Robin got his wish. The Make-A-Wish Foundation outfitted him with a cap proclaiming him "Ice Cream Man" and put him behind the counter of a neighborhood ice cream truck. All day long Robin rode around with a big grin on his face, asking his friends, "Whaddya want?"

And because of his generous wish, all of Robin's friends got ice cream that day.

Of all the famous princesses in all the land, none have anything on Princess Karlie, an enchanting 7-year-old whose fairytale wish came true once upon a time in a land called Muskegon.

Like so many little girls, Karlie dreamed of becoming a princess. With a tiara on her beautifully styled hair and wrapped up in a flowing white coat with a fur collar and cuffs to keep her warm, Karlie marveled at the white horse-drawn, rose-lined crystal coach that had arrived to whisk her off to her destination.

“Make-A-Wish Foundation® welcomes Princess Karlie. Congratulations on your coronation,” read the local theater marquee. As Karlie arrived, she was hailed by 1,700 cheering family, friends, neighbors and other members of her community who came together on her magical day to help grant her wish. On the stage of the theater, Princess Karlie wowed the crowd when she revealed her gown. A pale pink and lavender, full-skirted satin gown with purple tulle and feathers was what the princess chose to greet her subjects, and they approved heartily.

Princess Karlie was serenaded by Miss Michigan, who sang the Princess’ favorite song – “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” She was then presented with the item that every princess simply cannot live without – a personalized hope chest. Knights in shining armor also staged a mock battle for Her Royal Highness, and graceful ballerinas performed in her honor.

Afterward, Karlie, her parents, sister and hundreds of her young guests enjoyed a special party featuring the princess’ favorite foods – chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, and a tower of cupcakes that nearly touched the ceiling! Children’s games, dancing and a chocolate fountain added to the fun, ensuring a festive time for every member of the princess’ royal court.

Karlie’s mother, “Queen Jill,” was amazed at how the magic of a wish allowed her daughter to escape the battle with cystic fibrosis and become a royal princess. “It was an incredible day,” she said. “I can’t believe that all these people that we don’t know came out to make it so special for her.”

As most 5-year-olds, Cody absolutely adores candy. He just can't get enough of the stuff. As Cody discussed his one most heartfelt wish with his wish granters, he always went back to his favorite subject. Yes, the same subject that transforms 5-year-olds into unstoppable bundles of energy and leads to millions of full tummies every Halloween. More than anything in the entire world, Cody wanted lots of candy — and he wanted to receive his candy at "the place where candy was made."

What better locale for Cody to realize his wish than the chocolate capital of America, Hershey, Pennsylvania? Cody couldn't agree more, hence he and his family traveled from their Pacific Northwest home to the land of all sweet things. During their stay in Hershey, Cody and his family enjoyed all of the wonderful rides and attractions — including dancing Hershey's Kisses, skating lollipops, and unending candy. Cody has a special affinity for red licorice and blue suckers, and he enjoyed a "healthy" supply of those as well.

Cody's experience in Hershey was everything he wished for, and then some. His wish reflected the spontaneous, childlike nature of wishes.
    ---------------------------------

When it comes to the holidays for many young girls, visions of graceful ballerinas dance in their heads.

Nine-year-old Kayla is no different, except that her wish to join those beautiful, delicate dancers on stage recently came true. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Eastern Virginia and the inspiring generosity of Virginia Ballet Theatre, Kayla was given a role in a matinee performance of “The Nutcracker” presented by the dance company.

The wonderful opportunity completed a great wish adventure for Kayla. She uses a wheelchair and walker to get around but has always been fascinated by ballet and the dancers who perform its intricate movements.

The Make-A-Wish® chapter began her wish to become a ballerina by arranging for her to take dance lessons at a local studio. But before she could take her moment in the spotlight at a recital, Kayla broke her hip.

She eventually healed, and the Foundation approached Virginia Ballet Theatre about providing tickets to Kayla and her family to attend a performance.

Hearing about Kayla’s story, Artistic Director Frank Bove sprung into action. He created roles in “The Nutcracker” for Kayla as a special friend of lead character Clara and for her father as a butler, so that he could bring Kayla on stage.

The afternoon of her performance, Kayla received another cool treat at the pre-event Sugarplum Fairy Tea, where she was the guest of honor with “The Nutcracker” dancers.

Then Kayla was ready for her ballet debut. She was dressed in a beautiful party dress and her wheelchair was given a special “antique” look. Kayla’s father brought her out for her role, as a child receiving a present in the Christmas party scene. After her charming performance, Kayla watched the rest of the show from backstage.

When the cast, including Kayla, took its curtain call after the show, she was presented with flowers by Bove.

For Kayla and her family, the performance completed an unforgettable wish.

“We will treasure forever our memories of Kayla’s experiences on stage and behind the scenes with Virginia Ballet Theatre,” her father later wrote. “To be sure, Kayla’s participation in ‘The Nutcracker’…has been a wish come true.”

That is really nice they did that for her. I had a boss who was dying of cancer once and all he talked about was the movie 'Dances With Wolves' and how much he wanted to see it. I wrote to the company (I think it was Orion) and they said there was nothing they could do to help me. Turns out he lived long enough to see it anyway, though.

You know, thats upsetting to me.

The film might have not been ready yet, or something like that, but they could have done SOMETHING. How hard would it have been for them to get him signed copies of the script, signed headshots of the actors, tickets to the premire? Something.

Ick. I will never understand that.

They said it had to be formatted differently for video and that hadn't been done yet. It was disappointing but I didn't really expect much. It was worth a try.

Agreed. And I don't what happened with this Dancing with Wolves story but, in all honesty, I think it depends who you get on the other end of the phone. If you get a receptionist or some flunky in legal or HR, they might just say no because they don't know where else to send you.

If I'm ever in this situation, I'm going to be the pushiest bastard on the planet. Starting at the top, I'm contacting everyone on the board, the CEO, the president and anyone else I can think of. I'll be extremely nice, of course, but as you say, how hard is it to do a little good for someone desperately ill.

I used to believe that kids who died young were actually spirits that came to teach us lessons.

I certainly learned a thing or two from the volunteer experiences I had. I don't know if sick kids know more than we do, but they certainly don't dwell on the negative. They enjoy life for what it is.

I could tell you guys more stories, but they are just as sad as the Barney one.

I need to volunteer. You've got some great stories there.

And if these kids don't dwell on the negative and enjoy life for what it is, I would say they know more than us. That's the whole problem...we got wrapped up in so much bullshit which does not, in the end, mean a thing.

RIP Colby! You definitely have a place waiting in heaven! After reading the story about her, had to go see the movie too "Up", awesome movie with alot of meaning, go see it and you'll get the meaning too and understand it! Don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet! But it's worth seeing even if your an adult!
